Checking my German dictionary... It looks like the English word baby has crept into use by Germans (as per a 1962 dictionary), just as a related German word, kindergarten, has crept into English. So it appears what we've got here is a German speaker phonetically misspelling the English word, baby. Now that's a first for me. All the thousands upon thousands of cases of English clerks phonetically misspelling German names -- it never crossed my mind to try the reverse!
