Shirley, I've looked at the Orphan's Court Record for your John Straub. Would you please confirm the following: 1) The records say that John died in 1820. (22nd day of December AD 834 - "the father of your petitioners wards died intestate about fifteen years since in the year eighteen hundred and twenty") 2) The records say that on "September Term 1832", the sons, John - Jonathan and Daniel, "are minors children above the age of fourteen of John Straub". (meaning all born by 1818) ______________________________________ Scanned and protected by Spectrum Global Communications Inc. http://www.sgci.com
Gary, I asked about the wording when I was at the Courthouse because the rest of the documents dispute what I read for both his (John's) death and the age of the children. The words"about fifteen years" means within that time frame because the age of the children was the topic. The words "above" were used to describe that starting with number one and writing it down in a column on a page, the age below is 14 and all lesser ages are "above". The Pennsylvania law at that time mandated that all children whose father had died were to be assigned a guardian. I have a copy of the Court record for 1824 which states that all six children were in that category. It is important to understand some of the different wording in these court records. And, also, in the land records and wills. I have found the tax records to be more specific. That seems to be the case wherever money is a concern. Hope this answers your questions. Good to hear from you.
