Diana, I want to thank you so much for all this info. I have felt that my Straubs just fell out of the sky. I will send away and see if I can get the marriage record for Mary. I will let you know as soon as I found out Thank you again. I found Charles & Mary (ZILLES) ELIG in Wheeling, WV, in the 1900 census, then Widow Mary (ZILLES) ELIG in the 1920 Census. (I don't have an index to 1910.) I also found Charles and Mary living in their parents' households in the 1880 census! Both his parents and hers were immigrants from Germany or Switzerland, so we've found your immigrant ancestors. What I did not find is Mary married to a STRAUB. Mary was a widow in 1920, so I presume she married Mr. STRAUB sometime afterwards, but the 1830 census has only just been released, and I don't have access to an index. Everything I've found I've put online in the forum of linked family group sheets, which you can hook into from Charles & Mary's page: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/Straub/FGS/CharlesJElig-MaryZilles.htm Despite all I found, I haven't answered your question about the STRAUB who married Mary. The answer to that question is almost certainly in the county marriage license records. The address of the Ohio County Clerk in Wheeling can be found on this page: http://vitalrec.com/wvcounties8.html#Ohio If you get that marriage record, I hope you'll share it with us because, of course, it is the STRAUB connection that interests us. But having done all this research on Charles's and Mary's genealogy, and now re-reading your initial post, I find myself wondering... Were you seeking genealogical information about your ancestors or were you simply trying to find living kin? If you're seeking your living kin, your best tool is the telephone. Fortunately, you're looking for ELIG, STRAUB, ZILLES, and BERTSCHY, not JONES or BROWN! When I began doing my family genealogy, I started telephoning people with the appropriate surnames in the appropriate places. Within two months, I had found every living descendant of both sets of my grandparents -- and my grandparents were born in the 1870s, so there were a lot of descendants by the 1990s! It did take me awhile to get over the shock of my phone bill, but it was worth it. Another possible source for you are the researchers who have submitted files to WorldConnect. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi While Charles & Mary and their parents and children are not on WorldConnect, there are some other, later ELIGs from West Virginia who are almost certainly related to them. It's a matter of contacting each submitter. Beyond advising you how you might contact your living kin, as I've just done, I should remind everyone on the list that RootsWeb policy is that we not reveal data about living people on the mailing list (or message boards). Most boards and lists maintain this restriction, though WorldConnect is a notable exception because RootsWeb disclaims any responsibility for submissions to it. If you find any more details, at all, about Mary's STRAUB husband, please pass them on. Hopefully, we can find his parents. You welcome, Deborah. And now I have to apologize to you for not immediately recognizing you. I just realized <duhhh> you are *that* Deborah Mueller, from the days when STRAUB-L got started back in 1999. So nice to "hear" from you again.
