Diana: Let me run this by you. What do you think about my possible theory about this John George Straub Sr. of Pennsylvania. With all my gathering of information from many of the children I have found this on your site of a George Straup in the Middlecreek, Union (Now Synder), Pennsylvania. It states that there were 6 boys and one girl at the time of the census. It is about the right age for John George and his wife Lydia (Elizabeth). I have all these children for them starting with Susannah, William, John George, Henry, William, Lydia, and Amelia. Only one name is missing from this list a boy could be older than Susannah or near the same age. What do you think about this? It could be worth a shot but what do you think I need to do in order to prove this link? Let me know. Matthew D. Friend Come Visit My Favorite Web Sites! Good sleuthing, Matthew. I hadn't seen the match. The George STROUP in the 1840 census of Middlecreek Twp., Union [now Snyder] Co., PA, is an exact match to (John) George STROUP Sr. & Lydia __?__ in the 1850 census of Centre Co., PA. All the genders and ages fit perfectly with both the parents and the children I have (all born in PA): (John) George Sr., b. 1800 Lydia, b. 1802 1. L.D. [male], b. 1827/8 2. William, b. 1828 3. Susanna/Susan, b. 1828/9 4. (John) George Jr., b. 1830/1 5. Levi A., b. Oct 1833 6. Henry, b. 1834/5 7. Edward, b. 1837 8. Lydia, b. 14 Sep 1840 9. Amelia, b. 3 Apr 1842 The 1840 data are also consistent with the data of George STROUP in the 1830 census of Freeburg, Union [now Snyder] Co., PA. These data, including the proximity of Union and Centre Cos., while entirely circumstantial, are -- in my opinion -- sufficiently compelling to make the connection, which immediately suggests we look to find (John) George Sr.'s parents in the 1820 census of Union [now Snyder] Co. A perusal of the 1820 census records of that part of Union Co. that later became Snyder Co. shows eight STRAUB/STROUB families. Of these, only two have a male the right age to be (John) George Sr.: a John STRAUB, about whom we (or, at least, I) know nothing, and a George Peter STRAUB, about whom we know a great deal, including the fact that he had a son, George, born 26 Nov 1800. I have nothing on George, s/o George Peter -- does anyone have anything on him? As to proving any of this, well... I've done all I can with the census data. It's going to be a matter of delving deeper into the court records of both counties. Your message implies you have other sources. Where do you find "Elizabeth" as an alternate name for wife, Lydia? Or do you think, as I have suspected, that (John) George Sr. had two wives? Diana The Friend Family wrote: > > Diana: > > Let me run this by you. Below is an email that I got from my cousin John Chillings on this line he and I came to the same conclusion that we figure that "Lydia" was Lydia Elizabeth or Elizabeth Lydia considering the way our German ancestors had dealt with naming their children and move back and forth between first and middle name. So without any further ado we and calling her Lydia Elizabeth until it is proven otherwise. In the obitutary of William Straub he called his mother Elizabeth so it seems to me the only way to deal with this kind of situation. I don't know if John Chillings is on this list but it would be great to know if this is the link between my John George Straub and so forth. Here's the obit. for William Straub ... ..He is the son of our John George. Matthew, I forgot one important clue... (John) George STROUP Sr.'s son, (John) George STROUP Jr., named a son, Gordon STROUP. This brings us back to Washington Twp., Union [now Snyder] Co., PA, because that 's where there was a Jacob STRAUB married to a Hannah GORDON, which is where, if I recall, your quest originally began. She is my great great great *great* grandmother. I have the cypress chest her son, Amos HURSH built for his wife, Prudence MEACOM (Sp?) HURSH. Sylvia
Hi Sylvia: I know as of now I don't have a marriage of Susannah Straub but if she was married in or around Centre County than there is a possiblity. It would be interesting and wonderful if it is the same. Let compare notes. Matthew D. Friend Come Visit My Favorite Web Sites!
