    3. Francis, I have a little background information that could help you. Johan Carl (Charles) STRAUB b. 3-7-1744 died in Chapman Twp, Snyder County. He had two sons that I know of who remained in Chapman Twp, Johannes(John) and Johan Heinrich (Henry). One of them could be the grandfather of your Frederick Whistler STROUP. Garry Heagy

    3. Boy are you lucky! I don't know if my wife could have moved me with a stick of dynamite! I would give a lot to have stumbled across such a find as that! My Grandfather, Frederick Whistler Stroup was born in Union County,PA in 1844. I don't have any idea if he was born a 'Stroup' or a 'Straub', I have been trying to unlock that mystery for a long time now. I do know that he later (at age almost 17) enlisted in the Indiana Infantry (Reserve) in 1861 and was discharged in 1865 after being wounded at the battle of Murfreesboro and taken prisoner. He later was married in Michigan and then they wound up in Kansas where I was born. It's so funny that I can (almost) trace his every step after he enlisted at Elkhart IN, but not a thing before.... Good Luck in your Search and I hope that someday you will be able to go back and spend some more time in PA. Francis D. 3. Sorry! I understand that my name ( Stroup ) was also at one time changed from Straub although I have never ever seen anything official to substantiate that. My Grandfather, Frederick W. Stroup was born in Union County, PA in 1844, according to his obituary column. He enlisted in the Indiana Infantry Reserve in 1861 and served until 1865, ( this I have documentation of), but absolutely no inkling of who his parents were or any Siblings that I am sure he must have had! I wish you the best of luck in your quest and if you should ever hear of any info that I might use in furthering mine, I would appreciate your passing it along to me! Regards, Francis D. 1. [STRAUB-L] Any knowledge of Straubs in Wisconsin?
    2. Sally Hillis
    3. I am looking for David Straub who was born in 1845. Recently I found his daughter on the 1920 census in OK. In the listing there, she said her father was born in Wisconsin. I know the family was in Sedan KS in 1881 where this daughter was born. Most references I have seen for Straubs are in PA, so I was hoping perhaps this Wisconsin location in mid 1800s would click with someone. Thanks, Sally Hillis

Well I couldn't retrieve my emails that I was already behind on and guess what I lost around 500 of them. All the ones from Sunday on. So if anybody sent me ANYTHING...and I know that some of you did, because you told me you were sending stuff, will you please, pretty please resend it. I promise I won't let my mouse get stuck again. This really sucks, so depressing isn't it. I hope this won't be too hard for some of you to resend things. I know that I got some requests from some people on lists about names so email me again. And I know others were sending important suprises! I want to be suprised so I would appreciate if you would send them again. Thanks again, and sorry for the inconvience. Oh by the way, hope your day turned out better than mine! :)) Hear from you all real soon! Thanks, Kristie Dawn Boucher

It started with the Roman Catholics and the Baptists continued the practice. The first name is a baptismal name. If a child's name were given on a birth certificate as "Johannes Martin Herche", for example, the second given name would be the call name by which the person is known to their family and also in legal and secular records. The spiritual (baptismal) name was usually repeated with all the children of that family. That is why it appears all children have the same first name. After baptism the first or spiritual name "disappears" as it were. If a child died very young the full name will in all likelihood be used again for a later child. There may even be several children with the same spiritual and call names in one family. In the absence of birth records it would be reasonably safe to assume that, if there are 2 or 3 children with the EXACT name, only the last child with that name survived infancy. This practice applies to both male and female children. In old German records, if you find a birth certificate or baptismal record for "Johannes Martin Herche" don't continue to look for that name further. In most cases all later documents would list this person as "Martin Herche". This information could help you greatly when looking at ships records, immigration papers and so on. If you have extensive records and some of the names don't make sense, try to apply the naming tradition to your records and you may find some of the different people are really one and the same. 2. Hi Garry, Thanks for responding, Garry. When I received that newspaper article stating there was a belief that Jacob Fryburger (sp) was thought to be Jewish I really was excited as that opens up a whole new culture and new way to research information in Europe. I thought someone had already done the research. There were so many kids in that family that no doubt someone has already done the research and I just don't know about it. In the past several years I was just too busy writing my book on my mother's lines (Chase, Sherman, Hathaway to name a few) to worry about the Reeder side. Thanks for your comments. Ginger in AZ.

    2. You don't find the question of Jacob Fryburger being Jewish not interesting. I certainly do as normally one would think that if they were German they would probably have been Lutheran at that time in history but if they were Jewish then a whole new and interesting culture would emerge thus more, information available. I guess since I lived over there 7 years I found the subject VERY INTERESTING. Ginger in AA.

    3. Thanks for the addtional data, Garry. It sounds like this family still has some pretty "rough edges." We need to start exchanging sources, not just data, so we know which data are well-founded and which are not. It's really too bad the Clermont County site is so devoid of resources. I have to thank my lucky stars that my STRAUBs settled in Marion Co., OH. Thanks mostly to Allen Potts and Sharon Moore, it must be one of the best county sites in the country. There is a group of links on the STRAUB home page http://grove.ufl.edu/~dianagal/Straub/StraubHome.htm called "Useful Links for 'Pennsylvania Deutsch' Researchers" that you might want to peruse. One of the links is to an article on "19th-Century PA German Naming Customs": http://www.kerchner.com/germname.htm As for the children and their birthdates, there are several avenues to pursue. One is finding their tombstones. Another might be seeing if Jacob made an application for a pension for his Revolutionary War service. Another would be finding his will, although this would name only his surviving children. Unfortunately, there's almost nothing online at the Clermont County OHGenWeb site. As visiting the county court yourself is probably not an easy option, you might want to consider joining the Clermont County Genealogical Society and the Goshen Township Historical Society, and possibly the Ohio Genealogical Society, to gain access to their resources and assistance. > Concerning the Fryburgers: I have mentioned this before to this group and > don't think I've had any answers to this one, but some time ago someone from > Northumberland Co. sent me a newspaper article that states the fact that > Ludwig Fryburger, Framey's father, was Jewish. Now that you know Frederick's siblings, it is worth tracking down all of them. You never know which one may hold just the clue you need to find their father. Since Frederick fought during the Civil War, have you tried to find out if he or his widow applied for a pension? A pension application can be extremely useful.
