Hi Garry, Yes I did get to go to the Straub Church. I took pictures which I have put somewhere. I will have to find them. Unfortunately I did not get to speak with any of the people who are doing the history of the chuch. My brother was going to see his friend who belongs to the church. I haven' t talked to him lately but I will call him and find out if he has any information for me. It is a lovely church. I will find those pictures and send them to you if you want them. Hi Shirley, I'm checking to see if you found out anymore about the Straub Church near Danville this summer. Bye, Garry
Hi! I hope you all had a Happy Holiday! There are 5 Stroups listed in Berrien County, Michigan 1892 Directory online at http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/4218.htm This will only be up for a week, I believe, so you may want to check it out! Sue
Thank you Garry for the new information. It looks right to me. This is all that I have on the Johan Daniel Straub. 7. In Daniel Schumacher's record Daniel Straub and Catharina Schneidern were sponsors 13 June 1762 at Allemangel of a dau Catharina Elisabeth born to Jacob and Elisabeth Neuferth. Also sponsor of neice Catharina in 1762. He should have been at least age 16 when he was a sponsor. Daniel Straub was confirmed in Allemangel in 1763. 1772, 1785, 1786, 1798 Lynn Twp tax lists, 1785 Militia List. 1790 Northampton Co, Lynn Twp, p. 175. Daniel Stroup. 1800 Northampton Co, PA p. 570. Daniel Straub Sen. 02201-00100. Estate reported 12 June 1807 at Northampton (Lehigh) Co Orphans Court Docket Book 8:76. Heinrich Brobst b. 1775 d. 1802 from Lynn Twp, Lehigh County, PA names in his will as an administrator his brother-in-law, Daniel Straub. Since Heinrich was married to Catharine Heinrich, it would seem Daniel was married to a sister of Heinrich's. Daniel's wife name was Catherine, so his wife may have been Catherine Brobst. Daniel's brother, Jacob b. 1788, was married to a sister of Heinrich's. This also builds the argument that Daniel's father, Johan Daniel b. abt 1742 had two wives. The Brobst records gives Daniel, Sr.'s wife as Catharine Scheitz and a descendant of Daniel's son Andrew Jackson b. 1790 gives Daniel, Sr.'s wife as Catharine Seidler. Comments, please. I have recently received pension application records showing my Amelia Strope or Stroup b. abt. 1801 in Greene Co., PA, married Amos Tuttle, November 6, 1817 at her father's home and d. 1890 in Richhill Twp., Greene Co. PA She was the daughter of Thomas Stroup, b. abt. 1750 in PA, mother could be named Ann, other children were Thomas b. bef. 1795, Sarah b. 1795; John b. 1797, George, b. 1805, all in Greene Co. PA. Hope this sounds familiar to someone. Marjorie Smallwood
It appears that our Jacob Straub b. 1732 in Germany, son of Johan Peter b.1699 has no further links that I'm aware of. Jacob Straub b. 11-8-1724 Baltimore County, MD, who moved to North Carolina is the son of Adam Straub, b. abt 1698. Diana, if you're still receiving the Straub postings, I hope you're doing well with your thesis because I hope you can find time again for the Straub family genealogy. Garry Heagy
Diana, My ancestors, Adam and Mary STRAUB, lived in Hemlock Twp, Columbia County, but I was unable to find them in any the census lists that have been posted. I just found them in the 1850 census: Adam Strouss, 48, M, Farmer, PA Mary Strouss, 46, F, PA Cath. Strouss, 19, F, PA Wm. Strouss, 16, M, Labourer, PA Mary A. Strouss, 14, F, PA Eliz Strouss, 12, F, PA Benj. Strouss, 11, M, PA Esther Strouss, 5, F, PA Hannah Strouss, 2, F, PA Adam and Mary were married before 1830. Would you be kind enough to check the 1830 and 1840 census for this surname spelling and maybe Strauss? They would have been in Montour or Columbia County, PA. Garry Heagy

Hello all, I recently tried to send this post, but I was informed I was using the incorrect address. So I'm going to try again. I do apologize if this is a duplicate posting. My gg-grandfather, Henry STRAUB married four different DOWNEY sisters in Ohio or Indiana in the late 1800's. I obtained given names and dates from their headstones at the cemetery located in Dupont, which is in Jennings County, Indiana and the 1880 census for Jefferson County, Indiana. Henry STRAUB spoke German and was only able to speak very little English. He always claimed to have come from Hanover, Germany. But the 1880 census in Jennings County seems to indicate he may have come from Baden. He had two brothers that came from Germany as well, but I have no clue as to what their names are. I could only locate to IGI records through LDS Family History Center. One was for Lorinda and the other was for Delilah. It reflects given name Delilah as Delilah Isabelle b. 1861, but the headstone for Isabelle indicates her d.o.b. as b. 1850. So I have listed Delilah as the fourth sister married to Henry STRAUB. Joseph DOWNEY b. 26 Dec 1830 in Ohio d. 04 Mar 1915 in Dupont, Jefferson County, Indiana m. Elizabeth JORDON before 1850 b. 15 Dec 1829 in Ohio d. Hi folks! I read a while back one of you went to a church and saw gravestones with Brobst, Seidler, Sittler. Could you please tell me the name of the church? I'm also researching those names along with Straub. I'm still trying to find the parents of Anna Maria Straub who married George Sit(t)ler/Sidler in the early 1800's in Lehigh County PA. Thanks! Straub/Stroup hunters: It's been quite a while since I contributed anything and the board has been quiet lately. So I thought I would try to help out one of our newer subscribers, Francis Stroup, working on his ancestor Frederick Whistler Stroup, born in 1844 in Union County PA. I don't know if you have the census records, Francis, but I will provide them for the group in any case and hope they help you out. So here are the Straubs in the 1850 census from Union County: all are listed as "Straub", so I will forego the surnames. Also, I just realized that every person listed was born in PA, so I will skip that notation also. John H., Perry Twp, p. 106, age 26, farmer; wife Mary (26); ch: Susannah (4) and Henry (1) George, Perry Twp, p. 106, age 30, laborer; wife: susannah (23); ch: William (7), Emanuel (1), Mariah (14); also enumerated in household are Amelia Watt (4), Barbara Niser (48) and John Niser (16). Daniel, Perry Twp, p. 107, age 46, occ: ?looper?; w: Barbara (45); ch: Catherine (14), susannah (7), Sarah (9), Barbara (1); also enumerated (may or may not be their child) Tobias (21) Benjamin, Washington Twp, p. 115, age 47, wagon maker; w: Sarah (43); ch: Eli (18), Frederick (16), Sarah (12), Peter (9) Amelia (7) and Althia (5). Jacob, Washington Twp, p. 118, age 42, farmer; w: Hanna (42); ch: Mary (21), Catherine (19), Jacob (17), George (15), Sarah (13), Henry (10) and Harriet (8/12). Samuel, Washington Twp, age 38, farmer; w: Mary (34); ch: Phillip (4), Mary (12), Lucinda (9), John (7), Catherine (9), and samuel (3). George P., Washington Twp, p. 120, age 81, no occupation. Isaac, Washington Twp, p. 125, age 31, laborer; w: Sophia (33); ch: Eli (10), Samuel (9), George (6), Susannah (4) and Matilda (1). Jonathan, Chapman Twp, p. 148, age 27, laborer; w: Catherine (26); ch: Augustus (5). Peter, Chapman Twp, p. 153, age 40, laborer; w: Elizabeth (39); ch: William (20), Edward (18), Elizabeth (16), Sarah (8) and Lucy (1). Daniel, Chapman Twp, p. 158, age 26, laborer; w: Lydia (18); ch: Jefferson (4), Benevil (1); also Barbara Straub (66). Annamaria, Chapman Twp, p. 159, age 49; also Levi (23), tinsmith, Matilda (20), Daniel 917), Mary (14) and Samuel (12). Benjamin, chapman Twp, p. 162, age 13, in the home of William German. Mary, Chapman Twp, p. 162, age 65; also Eliza (17), Rebeckah (16), Solomon (12), Jeremiah (10), West (8), Frederick (6) and Lydia (8/12). Henry, Chapman Twp, p. 163, age 32, laborer; w: Mary (34); ch: Jeremiah (14), Phoebe (12), Catherine (9), Joseph (7), Barbara (6), Marie (4) and Henry (2). John, Buffalo Twp, p. 170, age 29, farmer; w: Nancy (25); ch: Amanda (2); also, Elizabeth Bay (age 56). Elisha, Lewisburg Borough, p. 314, age 18, boat builder; w: Elizabeth (18). NOTE: Of course, using the 1850 census, I am taking liberties listing someone as "wife" or "child" since that information isn't provided. It is just my interpretation. So, Francis, it looks to me as if your Frederick was at least living with Mary in Chapman Township. The other Frederick in Union County is 16, ten years too old according to your information. Given Mary's age, she may not be Frederick's mother. Unfortunately, it appears that you have one of these difficult situations that can't be closed with census records. If you want, I will look back at the 1840 census and see if I can make any deductions from that. Hope this helps. By the way, just a note of some recent experiences of mine that may save some of you grief at some point. I have been having a terrible time with my own surname, Burnell. I still am, but things have improved somewhat. The first problem was that for several censuses, my ancestor didn't make it into the published index. Second, I knew from researching my Stroup line among others, is that it isn't always spelled the same. Third, a variation on the second, is that the people actually compiling the indices have to make interpretations, too. Think of the name Burnell written out in script. Except for the initial B and the ending L or LL, that's a bunch of "mushy" letters that often appear as humps in the handwriting of the census-taker. It appears that for several years, I was missing Burnells because they were listed as Burrell or Benrel or who-knows-what in the index. Unfortunately, the only way to be sure is to slog through the census, line-by-line. regards, Jim Burnell
Annette K. Burgert has published some books on immigrants from Germany to Pennsylvania. She has just finished one for Grossgartach, Wuerttemberg to Pennsylvania. Names include STRAUB. The book was to be published at the end of July by AKB Publications, 691 Weavertown Road, Myerstown, PA 17067-2642. The book costs about $25.00 Usually, some of the Genealogy Societies buy these books. If anyone comes across this book in their research would they please let us know what it has on our family, STRAUB? Garry Heagy
