    3. Hi Shirley; Thanks so much for the info. I already own some of Annette's wonderful books. I look forward to getting the Grossgartach book and reading the microfilm. We are making wonderful progress on the Straub family. It is always so good to get them back to Germany and Annette Burgert's books have solved several of my German lines. There are many STRAUB families listed. In the July 1989 Mennonite Family History magazine, there are names of STRAUBs who moved to Wurttemberg and some who went to the Palatinate. 2. Hopefully some of you veteran STRAUB people can help me. My Jacob Straub arrived in the United States about 1850. His son Jacob was born according to one census in Wisconsin; on another one, in Germany. He was born May 16, 1849. Son John was born April 13, 1855 in Wisconsin. Daughter Mary was born January 9, 1861 in Kansas. "Old" Jacob was born about 1816 in Bremen, Germany and married Maria Petri, who was born about 1820. I can follow this family from Kansas on down, but cannot locate them in Wisconsin or on any passenger list, etc. I hope someone out there can help me. Donna in Wichita

    3. Welcome back! I was rather startled to see a sudden influx of STRAUB material. Glad to know things are back on track for you and for the list. I've been sidelined, myself. My dear guide dog, Delsie, had to be put to sleep last month on, of all days, the eleventh of September. She died at the same hour the planes slammed into the World Trade Center towers and I do believe that she was there to guide the newly departed souls to the rainbow bridge. Stil, it has been difficult for me to know that my sweet guide is no longer around. My online presence has been a bit diminished I am related to the STRAUB lines through Susannah Hogendoubler or Hougendoubler (or any of the many variants) whose mother was a STRAUB (although I'd have to consult my notes to find it now). I have it all somewhere, but I'm down with a nasty cold just now and will wait until I'm feeling a bit better to post my data. 3. Gary, I asked about the wording when I was at the Courthouse because the rest of the documents dispute what I read for both his (John's) death and the age of the children. The words"about fifteen years" means within that time frame because the age of the children was the topic. The words "above" were used to describe that starting with number one and writing it down in a column on a page, the age below is 14 and all lesser ages are "above". The Pennsylvania law at that time mandated that all children whose father had died were to be assigned a guardian. I have a copy of the Court record for 1824 which states that all six children were in that category. It is important to understand some of the different wording in these court records. And, also, in the land records and wills. I have found the tax records to be more specific. That seems to be the case wherever money is a concern. Hope this answers your questions. Good to hear from you. 3. Shirley, I've looked at the Orphan's Court Record for your John Straub. Would you please confirm the following: 1) The records say that John died in 1820. (22nd day of December AD 834 - "the father of your petitioners wards died intestate about fifteen years since in the year eighteen hundred and twenty") 2) The records say that on "September Term 1832", the sons, John - Jonathan and Daniel, "are minors children above the age of fourteen of John Straub". 3. My name is Shirley STRAUB Morton. I am glad that I gave my friend, Debbe Hagner permission to send that information to Diana concerning the Union County Orphan's Court Records about John STRAUB's estate and guardians of the children. Last year I was not able to do much of any thing due to a severe bout with pneumonia. This year , my health is much better. My line is: John STRAUB, b. ?, d. 13 Jan 1824 =Elizabeth Steeley, 12 Dec1794 -17 May 1864 ---Jonathan Francis STRAUB, Sr. 9 May 1821 -2 Nov 1901 = Barbara Steffen, 20 Dec1834 -25 Dec 1919 -----Jonathan Francis STRAUB, Jr., 5Nov1873 - 30 Sep 1910 = Lily Agnes Kerstetter, 23 Jul 1869 - 15 Jan 1914 --------William Augustus STRAUB, 10 Jan 1908 -19 May 1992 = Estella Lillian Moser - 3 Oct 1908 - 22 Dec 1982 My brick wall is finding solid evidence that John STRAUB who married Elizabeth Steeley was the soldier of Revolutionary days. Or was he John's son? Or was his father someone other than Peter who died in 1804? They all lived in the area that is now Snyder County, PA.

    3. Susan, I have been researching Andrew Straub, the son of Peter since 1979. My dad ,born in 1908, said that the Andrew who founded Freeburg, Snyder, PA, was his great-great uncle. Dad's source of information was from his great aunt, Salomi Straub Shaffer who was born in 1859and died about 1936. Two years ago, I had gone to several counties in central PA to search for information concerning Andrew. In Centre at Bellefonte, I found that Andrew and his wife, Barbara bought and sold about 50 parcels of land in that county. Then I visited Mifflin, Perry, Union, Northumberland and Cumberland. That Andrew ( I checked his signature on the land transfer documents) and his wife Barbara, had bought and sold many parcels of land during the late 1700's and the first half of 1800.- There were so many that I did not have enough time to make copies of all of them.-I have a copy of the original transfer of Peter Straub's spelled STROUP) land deeded to Andrew, his son for 900 pounds on 15 June 1792. Found in Deed Book E, pages 444 and 445 in the Northumberland County Courthouse records. I have more documents if you want the reference numbers. 2. My interst is in STRAUB in Carroll County KY. Joachim STRAUB showed up in Carrollton, KY about 1858. His spouse was Margaret FLANNIGAN. 1860 census says Joachim was born in Switzerland, and Margaret in Ireland. Joachim and Margaret's children were Rebecca (never married), Joachim, Mary (married John FELLER), Margaret (married William MATHEWS), Emma (married Mathew GRASMICK), and William (married Margaret HILL). My brick walls --- Where exactly did Joachim and Margaret come from, and when did they come? Where were they married? Did they live elsewhere in America before settling in Carrollton? Regards, Dick

Line goes from me to Joyce Stroup to Arthur Stroup (b. 1907, Huntingdon Co. PA) to Jay Jacob Stroup ( b. 1887, Rice Co. KS) to Jacob D. Stroup (b. 1862, Juniata Co. PA or nearby) to Jacob B. Stroup (b. 1829, Juniata Co. PA or nearby) to Moses Stroup/Straub (b. ca. 1794; ?Pfoutz Valley? Juniata/Snyder/Perry Co.) to ? The several of us working on this line can't get back any further right now. I remember Garry's theory that Moses was a son of Peter Straub. We do know that the ancestral family home was in the Pfoutz Valley, which crosses the Juniata River and the Juniata/Perry County line. We also know that Andrew Straub (of Freeburg, Snyder Co.) owned land in the Pfoutz Valley, which is a short carriage ride from Freeburg. I have been trying to gather information on the Straub/Stroup families of that Juniata/Perry/Snyder area AND the family up the road in Mifflin County. I sent for about 30 Civil War pension applications for Pennsylvania Stroup veterans just before the price went up. I have received only about 3 or 4, was notified that several others could not be located, and the remainder are in some sort of limbo. Here's hoping that those records come trickling in as time goes on and allows us all some additional information. (At the current price of $30 apiece, I don't intend to do much fishing.) So I can possibly assist some of you if time allows. Between the Denver office of the National Archives and the Denver Public Library, I have access to all the census records. As of now, I am in the process of "sweeping" all the records for Mifflin, Juniata, and Snyder/Union/Northumberland, for names of interest, one of which is Stroup/Straub. So I have available many census records from those counties for the family of concern. I look forward to increased activity. Jim

    1. [STRAUB-L] (Johann) Pieter STRAUB, 1733 immigrant
    2. Diana Gale Matthiesen
    3. We seem to have immediately gotten involved in what has been a difference of opinion as to the ancestry of (Johann) Pieter STRAUB, 1733 immigrant to Philadelphia on the brigantine "Pennsylvania Merchant" (with wife Maria and sons Pieter and Jacob). Two schools exist: 1) that his parents are Hans Kristoph STRAUB and Anna Elisabetha KETTEMANN of Grossgartach, Wuerttemberg; and 2) that his parents are Hans Adam STRAUB and Anna Barbara DETSCHLER. The source for the former is church records from Grossgartch filmed by the LDS and (apparently) transcribed into a book by Annette Kunselman Burgert called, "Grossgartach, Wuerttemberg, to Pennsylvania: Some Early Colonial German Immigrants" (1999, AKB Publications, Myerstown, PA). I do not know the source for the latter. Does anyone? What documentation I have is on this family group sheet: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/JohannPieterStraub-AnnaMariaBarbaraHoffman.htm One would think I would have gotten immersed in the question a long time ago, but as I have not yet proven my connection to (Johann) Pieter, I had decided to sit back and let y'all hash this one out. Given that (Johann) Pieter is the progenitor of a great many American STRAUBs, it's a question of considerable importance to STRAUB genealogists. Diana

    3. This is a follow-up to my previous post. The birth year I have for Daniel Straub (1778), who married Elizabeth Hahn was from an LDS record. If the 1850 census record is correct, then Daniel (65) was born in 1784-5.
