In olden days, our German female ancestors sometimes added 'in' to their maiden surname. For example: In the marriage record for Maria Straub, the name might appear as, Maria Straubin.
Yes, Gordon. Maria was the one I was referring to when I said we know of at least one case where STROUP became TROUP. In fact, she's our best example of STRAUB name conversion because her father went from STRAUB to STROUP and she went from STROUP to TROUP! Her family group sheet is at: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/StephenSmith-MaryTroup.htm STRUBEN is a feminine variant of STRAUB. In German (and German-Swiss), surnames are inflected by gender, with the feminine version adding -IN or -EN. A man and his sons would be referred to as Herr STRAUB, while his wife would be Frau STRUBEN and his daughters Frälein STRUBEN. I've also seen STRAUB females referred to as STRAUBIN. I don't know enough German to know the details of the spelling rules. Diana walk.inn@juno.com wrote: > > It has been mentioned that Straub has become Troup . It has been mentioned that Straub has become Troup . I beleive that my GGGGGreat Grandma Maria Troup that married Stephen Smith in the later 1700s was actually a Straub . In anouther family I have a marriage of a Gephart to Struben in Switzerland . But when one of her nephews migrated to Germany and he went by the name Straub . Does anyone know if Struben is the Swiss variant of Straub or this a literacy mistake ? Gordon Walk
Hello Joe, I've often thought it odd, when so many STRAUBs/STROUPs lived in Philadelphia, why no one on the list seemed to have anything but farmers in their ancestry! I can't help you because I doubt if I have anything you don't already have, namely the 1880 and 1900 census records: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/JacobStroup-Catharine_.htm I have at my web site an every-name index to STRAUB/STROUP in the 1850 census of PA. In theory, any STRAUB/STROUP who was a child in 1850 in PA should be in the index. In other words, your Jacob, age 12, should show up -- and there is one, but not in Philadelphia. I do know the index is incomplete, because the records are incomplete, but even so, it can be helpful. http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/PA/PACensusStraub/1850.htm Just use the Find feature of your browser to find a name on the page. Good hunting, Diana PULLEN352@cs.com wrote: > > Does anyone have a connection with a Stroup family in Philadelphia > (Germantown) around 1890? > My line is: > Jacob Stroup B. 1838 in PA m. Does anyone have a connection with a Stroup family in Philadelphia (Germantown) around 1890? My line is: Jacob Stroup B. 1838 in PA m. Catharine (b. 1842 in England) married in PA. Daughter Mary Stroup b. 1863 in PA m. F. William Benner. Daughter May Matilda Benner b. Sep 5, 1890 in Germantown m. Henry Percy Pullen in Phila. Joe Pullen
I have Straubs that ended up in Kansas as well. I have John Benedict Straub married to Elizabeth Straub that lived in Bern Switzerland. They had a Amelia who married Karl Mueller in Switzerland. Their children were Rosetta, Sadie, Charlie, Susie, Mary, Fred, Ruddie, Jonnie, Karl, Annie, Sammie, Elisabeth, Katie.....Theri daughter Susie was the first born in the US in 1873 inOH on the way to KS. Anna Suzette (Susie) married Ernest Zurbuchen and they had my great grandmother Lena who married Charles Boucher and These families once they got to Kansas lived in Harvey Co. and Butler Co. If this looks famililar please emial me THank Kristie Boucher
I forgot to mention that, in the census, Bernard is found living near some GRAYBILLs. There were STRAUBs/STROUPs associated with GRAYBILLs in Snyder Co., PA, so I would look there, too. Diana

Marlene, I have made up a family group sheet of what I can find on Bernard STROUP. You are lucky his name is so unique, he is relatively easy to find -- be thankful he's not John! http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/BernardStroup-JaneEnglish-NancyMcGregor.htm If you can add any details, it might help me find more -- especially, I do not know the names of the early children. The birthdates of the children suggest that Bernard and Jane were married in the early 1820s, and this date is consistent with the fact that Bernard shows up in the 1830 census (of Huntingdon Co.), but nowhere in the 1820 census. Almost invariably, young people -- certainly young women -- lived with their parents until they married. Thus we need to find a place where there were both STRAUB/STROUP and ENGLISH families in the 1820 census. There are no STRAUB/STROUP or ENGLISH families in Huntingdon Co. in 1820, at all, so we must look elsewhere. The most likely place would appear to be Perry Co., where there are a number of STRAUB, STROUP, and ENGLISH families in the 1820 census. Anyway, that's where I would start looking... Diana
In answer to Marlene The only information that I found on Bernard is on a Film# 0466399 at the Family History Center concerning a Clark County, Ohio marriage index showing the marriage of Bernard to Frances Shaw on 24 March 1836. He also shows up in the 1860 Census, but I don't know his location. The name is just on an index list. The other suggestion that I have is to look in Huntingdon County,PA becauseBlair was not a county until 1846. Blair was taken from a part of Huntingdon and a part of Bedford. Because Martinsburg is close to Huntingdon, I would check there first. If I find more information, I will send it to you. Shirley Straub Morton
Hello Garry, I'm glad to be back, and glad that you're still at it! Thanks for the info re: TRAUB. So, I guess we have to assume these TRAUB/TROUPs are a different family. Well, that makes things easier. I'm overwhelmed with just working on STRAUB/STROUP. THANK YOU for the tombstone transcriptions, Sue! I have a copy of Wagenseller's original book, but it is organized geographically, not alphabetically -- and has NO index! I've never had the patience to go through the book, page by page, to extract all the STRAUB/STROUP records. One warning with Wagenseller. There are errors in some of the birthdates calculated from the age at death. Sometimes the birthdates are off by several years, not just a few days or months. I don't know whether the errors are Wagenseller's or someone else's, but they are there. I always double-check birthdates calculated from age at death -- from any source -- using Ben Buckner's Javascript Birthday Calculator. It's one of those little tools I don't know what I would do without: http://www.public.asu.edu/~tarchon/genea/bdjscr.html Again, thank you for the transcriptions! Diana
Diana, I'm also glad you're back at it. Since we were 'hot' on the Straub trail two years ago, I've learned that there is also a Traub (Troup) family. I find them first in Lehigh County, just like our Straub family.
First I must start by saying "Welcome Back Diana!" I'm really enjoying reading everyone's roll call, and am desperately trying to figure out where I might fit in with you all! Well, here's my line as I know it: Frederick Stroup, born March 1844 somewhere in Pennsylvania, died November 15, 1927 at Cataract, Karthaus Township, Clearfield County, Pa. He married Rebecca "Unknown." They had three known children: 1. Frederick Stroup - born August 1862 and married Myrtie "Unknown." 2. George Benjamin Stroup - born Sept. 6, 1866, died January 2, 1905. He married Anna Margaret Heichel (June 3, 1865 to Feb. 14, 1950) in 1890 and had five children (listed below, this is my direct line). 3. Sarah Stroup born 1868. This is all the info I know on her. The children of George Benjamin Stroup and Anna Margaret Heichel are as follows: 1. Albert Blair Stroup - born March 1892 and married Estelle Michaels. 2. Homer E. Stroup - born May 11, 1895 at Pottersdale, Karthaus Township, Clearfield County, Pa., died Oct. 9, 1973 at Port Allegany, Pa. and married Mildred E. Handley. They had 7 known children. 3. Ross Leslie Stroup - born Sept. 26, 1896 at Pottersdale and died April 1, 1973 at Karthaus. He married Ada Mae Rees and had 5 known children. This is my direct line. 4. Earl C. Stroup - born July 27, 1899 at Cataract, died 1928. 5. George Benjamin Stroup - born May 16, 1905 at Karthaus and died Feb. 16, 1993 at Karthaus. Married Virginia McGonigal. Had three known children. Would be very interested in hearing if anyone connects with this family. Will be glad to share what I have and know! Kathy B kbrbkr@toolcity.net
Thanks Shirley, The other Benjamin b. 1802 is my GreatgreatGrandfather. This is the Benjamin that Diana and I believe is the brother of her Andrew. Thanks for the info on the other one. Benjamin STRAUB born in 6 Dec 1802 is a son of George P. STRAUB, born in Northumberland County (now Snyder) married Sarah Mertz. He died 3 Jun 1877 in Freeburg, Snyder, PA. His son moved to Indiana and the descendents still live there. There might be other Benjamins born in 1802. Those people named so many by the same name. It is difficult to sort them out. Dear Shirley, I have been searching for the parents of Bernard Stroup b. 1800 and raised his family in Blair Co. PA, his wife was Jane English b. 1798 d. 1845. He m. Nancy McGregor in 1846. They are all buried in Martinsburg, Blair, PA All together they had 12 children. Bernard was a stone cutter and built a beautiful old stone house in Martinsburg. I have not been ab le to connect him with any of the other Stroup families in PA, however I'm sure he fits there somewhere. You have done so much research....any advise for me. Hi All, Regarding the Benjamin listed in the St. Peter's Union Cemetery opens a new question.... Is it possible to have 2 Benjamin Straubs both born in 1802? My Benjamin was born in 1802 in PA and died in 1876 in Salem Twp. Michigan. I know he died in Michigan. I have been to his resting place at Burnip Cemetery at Burnip Corners just outside Salem Twp. The sign at the cemetery reads that it is called New Salem cemetery. I have pictures of his grave stone. So, Who is the 2nd Benjamin and who is his parents? I did find a civil war pension index card for a Benjamin Stroup, wife Elizabeth, which by the way is the name of my Benjamins wife too. He was in the 44th Indiana Infamy and the pension was file in Michigan. Does anyone have any info on the other Benjamin Nancy
Hello Sylvia, Great to hear from you, but sorry to hear the bad news. I know I feel the grief from the loss of a companion animal as deeply as that of a human family member. You descend from a well-known line: Maria Eva STRAUB, daughter of Andreas STRAUBE (immigrant to Philadelphia in 1743 on the brigantine "Mary"), who married the Revolutionary War soldier, Joseph HOUGENDOBLER. http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/JosephHougendobler-MariaEvaStraub.htm I hope some day I can prove a link to my immigrant. <sigh> Glad you wrote, and hope you get over your cold quickly. Diana
I'm asking this because we do have one *known* case of STROUP becoming TROUP... I'm currently extracting all the census data on STRAUB/&c. from the censuses of PA, concentrating today on Snyder Co. I came across these TROUPs in 1840 in Perry Twp., Union [now Snyder] Co.: 1840 PA Union Co. Perry Twp. p. 391 Troup John (P. son) 020 001 - 000 010 Troup Peter 100 001 - 100 001 Troup John 100 010 - 110 010 Troup Peter Jr 011 110 010 - 112 100 100 Troup John (J. son) 100 001 010 - 111 010 000 Does anyone have any idea whether any of these are or are suspected of being STROUPs/STRAUBs? The other STROUP/STRAUBs in Perry Twp. in 1840 are Daniel STRAUB Sr. (wife Barbara __?__), Daniel STRAUB Jr. (wife Elizabeth HAHN), and John STRAUB (wife Elizabeth STEELEY). For those of you who may not have been to these pages at my web site, I have extracted all STRAUB/&c. from the 1790-1850 censuses for all of PA. Much of this work was done by Jim Burell back in 1999, and I have been adding to it. For the years 1790-1840, the pages function as an index to heads-of-households. The 1850 page goes further because it is an *every-name* index to STRAUB/&c. for all of PA. My goal is to identify each of these households, from 1790 to 1850 (and beyond), linking them to their family group sheets. Anyway the hub to link to the pages is at: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/Straub-Census.htm Anytime connections you can make, from one year to the next, that I don't have, would be great. Diana
