    1. [STRAUB-L] Straube Piano Company
    2. Hi All, I wrote to Hammond Ind. regarding the Straube Piano Co. and here's the reply. The Straube Piano Company was started in a Chicago suburb in 1878. The company was named after William Straube the founder. The Company moved to the city of Hammond, Ind. in the early part of the 1900's. In 1940 the Straube Piano Company moved to Chicago Heights, Illinois. They could find no connection of the Straube Piano Co. to Solomon Straub or Maria Straub of the Straub music publishing company of Chicago. To me that means that there still may be a connection but they are not aware of any. Is William Straube related to Solomon or Maria Straub? Nancy Straub Holben

The submitter shows John Peter STRAUB to be son of (Johann) Adam STRAUB & (Maria) Catharina HEILMAN. http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/JohannAdamStraub-MariaCatharinaHeilman.htm And to have a daughter, Emmaline Savilla, b. 16 Nov 1824. John Peter has a brother, Adam, who also is said to have a daughter Emiline, born in 16 Nov 1829. http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/AdamStraub-MaryGruber.htm There is obviously some mixup here, but it seems either John Peter or Adam, or both, had a daughter named Emiline, one of whom is probably your great-grandmother. They lived in Bloomsburg, Hemlock Twp., Columbia Co., PA. > I believe the JOHN PETER STRAUB may be a confusion of Emmaline's husband's name John > Peter Stecker... I see no reason to think so. John Peter is a common name, especially among STRAUBs descended from immigrant Johann Pieter, which this John Peter is. > and also I am wondering if the HARRIOT listed as her mother may be the > confusion of HARRIET SALOME STRAUB even though she was born about 70 years later? Harriet is a common German name. > And while I am asking... Emmaline's middle name is "SAVILLA". Any thoughts on where > that might have come from in Straub lineage? I've never before run into it in connection with a STRAUB. "Savilla" can be a surname, and the given name is thought to be a spelling variant of Sabella, which is short for Isabella. As a surname, it's rare; as a given name, not that uncommon in the 19th century. My guess is that the "Savilla" part of Emmaline's name didn't come from her STRAUB ancestors, but rather through her mother or grandmothers. Try going to WorldConnect and put savilla in the Given Name field. Leave the Surname field blank. Then put pa columbia in the Birth Place field and hit Search. Do it again putting the location in the Death Place field, instead. You'll see that there were a number of families with females named Savilla in Columbian Co., PA, in the 1800s. Perhaps one of these families is related to your Emmaline Savilla. On the other hand, sometimes people were named for good friends or someone admired or respected, so there are times when the given name is no help at all in indicating a relationship. Also try the same experiment with the various spellings of Emmaline (viz., Emaline, Emiline). Diana

    3. Question regarding the name Harriet? My gr-grandmother is Emmaline Savilla Straub b 1829 Bloomsburg PA, d 1915 ND, m John Peter Stecker b 1822 Hemlock PA d (murdered)1874 Cannon Lake, Rice Co., MN. In familysearch.com her parents are listed as JOHN PETER STRAUB b 1798 BloomsburY, PA and HARRIOT b 1802, submitted by a Vivian Smith, Vancouver WA. After much gen. searching, these people do not seem to exist. I believe the JOHN PETER STRAUB may be a confusion of Emmaline's husband's name John Peter Stecker and also I am wondering if the HARRIOT listed as her mother may be the confusion of HARRIET SALOME STRAUB even though she was born about 70 years later? I am thinking this confusion may be incorrect family lore? Anyone have any thoughts on this? Also is anyone aware of the name "Harriot" appearing earlier in any of the Straub lines? And while I am asking... Emmaline's middle name is "SAVILLA". Any thoughts on where that might have come from in Straub lineage? Many Thanks, DianaO. Her brother Jonathan Fancis was always called "France. Her sister Mary Agnes was always referred to as "Agnes". Jonathan's son, my father's christened name was William Augustus. My mother, my father, and my ex-husband all went by their middle names; it's not that unusual. My parents went by their middle names because their first names were the same as their repective parents. My husband went by his middle name because he simply didn't like his first name. Of course, this kind of name change can give us fits when trying to do genealogy -- especially when doing German immigrants! Diana

    2. Shirley Morton
    3. I have no evidence which identifies the father of the John STRAUB who died 13 Jan 1824. The Union County Orphans' Court Records clearly identify when he died, but there are no records of his date of birth. Elizabeth STEELEY appears to be the daughter of Lazarus STEELEY, but there are some conflicting dates for her birth. I am trying to find whether she was born in 1894 or 1895. The children of my Aunt Salome and Uncle Milton SHAFFER are:Hulda; Irene; Sadie; Madelyn; and Henry. For information on many early marriages, a book , "Central PA Marriages 1700-1896" is available for look-ups at the Snyder County Historical Society. My great-grandmother, Barbara STEFFEN and great-grandfather, Jonathan Francis STRAUB, Sr. are listed on page 67, under marriages by the Rev. G.G. Erlenmeyer. If anyone has additional information on this John STRAUB who died in Beaver Township, Union County (now Snyder), please post it. Shirley STRAUB MORTON

It's difficult to get early marriage records in PA because PA was so late in recording them at the county level, so these newspaper notices are very much appreciated. Milton E. There are two sites on the web that I find very convenient for finding what county a town is in: http://www.mit.edu:8001/geo http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form The first site tends to be faster, so I use when all I'm after is the county a town is in, but the second site has a much larger database and can be queried for a great variety of geographical questions. 2. Heres the memoir of Rev. Benjamin Stroub given to me by the Michigan Conference Historical Center; "REV. B. STROUB fell asleep in death in January 1873. He was about 70 years of age and for more than 40 years a minister in this church the greater part of itinerant life having been spent in the Sandusky Conference (Ohio). The last few years of his itinerancy was a faithful laborer. He possessed a good mind and was a fair preacher. He was not without his faults and yet he sought to be a Christian. He died in peace." Rev. Straub was my GreatGreatGrandfather and its very probable the brother of Andrew Straub. Nancy

    1. [STRAUB-L] STRAUB of Marion/Fairfield/Hancock Cos. OH
    2. Diana Gale Matthiesen
    3. This is a bit convoluted, but for those (few) of us working on the STRAUBs who came to Delaware/Marion Co., OH, ca. the early 1820s -- and who are desperate for the least tid-bit of information or clue... George Washington STRAUB (1846-1927) was a son of Andrew S. STRAUB (1797-1858). George married Sarah E. CORBIN (1848-1888), who was the sister of Martha Ann CORBIN (1838/9-1910). Martha married Israel BENSLEY (1831-1880), son of James BENSLEY & Catharine POPE. Israel's brother, Fredrick/Frederick BENSLEY (1825-1889), died in Allegan Co., MI. Benjamin STRAUB (1802-1873), presumed brother of Andrew S. STRAUB, also died in Allegan Co., MI. Is the Allegan Co. location mere coincidence? Or are there other connections between these families? James BENSLEY (1790s-1878) & Catharine POPE (1790s-1878) were married 11 Oct 1816, Washington Co., OH, but they were born in PA. We probably should be on the lookout for BENSLEY (or POPE) ca. the 1790s to 1820s in the vicinity of Northumberland/Union [now Snyder] Co., where these STRAUBs are strongly suspected to have lived before coming to Ohio.

    1. [STRAUB-L] MISC STRAUB INFO
    2. HI All, Here's some Misc. Straub family info that I've had but haven't had time to post. I hope this can be of help to someone. City of Akron, Ohio 1. ALOIS STRAUB, musical instruments, Akron, Ohio is a son of ALOIS AND MAGDALENA (GUDFRIED) STRAUB, and was born 9-11-1826 in Baden, Germany. He learned cabinet-making at 14 years of age, and after working two years, he began to work on musical instruments in Fernbach, which he continued for 4 years when he entered the German Army. After leaving the army, he came to the US, arriving in NY in the latter part of the summer of 1849; he went to Philadelphia and remaining in different parts of PA until Oct. 1851, then he came to Akron, Ohio and worked a short time in a cabinet-shop. He commenced the manufacture of musical instruments for Horton & 'Rose, which he continued about 5 years, when his health failed and in the spring of 1857 he was employed as a traveling salesman for the company. About 1861, he began dealing in instruments on his own account, it being the first music store in the city (Akron) and about 1870-71, commenced this manufacture, which he continued some 5 years, at the same time keeping the music store, which he has continued ever since. He sells the celebrated Weber pianos and the Mason & Hamilin organs, also the Burdette organs. He married MISS ELIZABETH ELISENHAUER of Akron, Jan 5, 1857. He is a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church Nancy Straub Holben
