    3. Thank you for checking, Wendi. And I heartily concur on giving help where I can. I figure, if nothing else, I've eliminated another STRAUB who is not related. The number of STRAUBs is not infinite -- at some point, we will have identified them all! And if I don't know Andrew's father at that point, I'll just shoot myself! ;-) Diana wendi johnson wrote: > > It was no problem. 3. Great, Wendi! Thanks so much. It is very considerate of you to do the lookup. And now that you've gone to the trouble, I realize that I DO have an index to the 1870 census <aargh!> (on a Heritage Quest CD -- my office is still in chaos due to the recent computer failure, which is not entirely fixed as yet). It's the 1860 Ohio census that I have no index to. There is one published (in 1979 by Lida Flint Harshman), but it isn't available online or on CD, and I don't have access to a hard copy. If anyone does have access, it would be nice to snag George in the 1860 census, hopefully still living with his parents or possibly as a newlywed (he was married in August of 1860). Again, thank you for taking the time to do the lookup. 1. [STRAUB-L] widow Kate STRAUB of Brown Co., OH
    2. Diana Gale Matthiesen
    3. Doug, If Charles was age 19 in 1880, it's unlikely you will find him in the 1860 census, making the 1870 census record crucial. Unfortunately, I don't have an index to the 1870 census of OH. However, you're in luck because this family is in a Pedigree Resource File online at the LDS site: http://familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp I found the file by doing a search on Charles Straub birth: 1861 year: exact It appears your "Kate" is Catherine E. HANSELMAN, b. 1838 in Franklin Twp., Brown Co., OH, the daughter of Charles HANSELMAN and Christian HERZOG. Catharine's parents were both born in Wuerttemberg, Germany. Catherine married 21 Aug 1860 to George STRAUB, born in Rheinpfalz, Germany, son of Jacob STRAUB, so it appears Charles is their first born. This file has nothing more on George, but traces Catharine's ancestry back further. I won't give more, here, as you can pick it up at the LDS site. You will obviously want to get in touch with the submitter of that file. I've created a family group sheet for them at: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/GeorgeStraub-CatherineEHanselman.htm Good hunting, Diana Doug Schaefer wrote: > > Thanks all for the help. 3. Thanks all for the help. Kate is the head of the house in 1880. The family is in Ohio, Brown county, Ripley, ED16, T9_996 film, page 30. Kates parents are both from Germany and her husband is listed as being born on Bavaria. That's all I have on the family. I've looked for Kate and Charles in 1860 Ohio, Charles would be less than 1 yr. old, but with no luck there either. 1. [STRAUB-L] different Ohio Straubs
    2. I just went thought my files and found a few neglected Straubs that I haven't looked into so if anyone can help with info I would appreciate it; The following Straubs are the children of Benjamin, Jr. and Rebecca Benner Straub. The name is spelled STROUB consistently for this family even on the headstones of Benjamin and Rebecca; **ALL BORN IN HANCOCK COUNTY OHIO*** FLOYD STROUB b. bet. 1873-74 he may be married to GLADYS D ???? but I'm not sure. They are buried next to Benj. Jr.and Rebecca and that's what makes me think I have the right Floyd. DOW M. STRAUB b. 1857 d. 1928 m.Susan ????? GEORGE STRAUB b. 1859 d. 1922 m. Amanda ????? AMERICA STRAUB b. bet. 1860-61 m. Joseph E. Farthing 11/17/1881 DELLA STRAUB b. 2/8/1867 d. 8/16/1904 m. Martin Helck ORRA STRAUB b. bet. 1870-1871 and DAVID STRAUB b. 1866 d. 1934 m. Lovina ???? **I did find a DAVID B. STROUB age 44 in 1910 so the date of birth fits, born in Ohio Wyandot Co., Ohio and I find no records of the family living in this county ???? married to Lovina C 41 b.Ohio and there children are listed as RAY C. 16 b.Ohio LLOYD B. 11 b.Ohio and CARL L. 5 b.Ohio. This is from the 1910 ohio census Miracode index, Ancestry.com. Also I'm still trying to get the right birth year for my Grandfather Frank Straub of Jackson Mi. All records I have, when calculated give different years plus the years don't match the place the family was living in at that time. The death cert. is also questionable. he Social Security number on his Death cert. does not belong to him and no other number can be found in any variation of the number. It is a Jackson MI SS number so for this reason I question any info on it. Can anyone tell me the best way to try and get this figured out? Nancy

    3. I've retrieved the other George STRAUB records and compiled them into family group sheets: Clinton Co., IL: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/GeorgeStroup-Mary_.htm Washington Co., WI: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/GeorgeStraub-ReginaMuehl.htm Del Norte Co., CA: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/GeorgeAStraub.htm None of these is your George. Your George was born in PA and his children were born in PA at least as late as October, 1869, so I would expect to find him in PA in 1850 and 1860, for certain, and very likely in 1870 as well. He may have been missed in any or all of these years, but I don't think he was somewhere else. Diana

STRAUB, Anthony 43 male white Farmer R.E. value-$5000 Per. value-$1201 born-Prussia both parents-foreign born (same of all in family) Caroline 42 female white houseKeeping born-Prussia Minnie 16 female white at home born-Mich attends school Charles 13 male white ----- born-Mich Mary 12 female white ----- born-Mich Eliza 8 female white ---- born-Mich **in column 15--attends school within the year column 16--cannot read column 17--cannot write There is a mark in all these columns for Charles and Mary. I'm not sure if it is yes they can rear and write or no they can't. And for Eliza only column #15 has a mark in it. 1870 London Twp. 1. Re: [STRAUB-L] Some George STRAUB in 1860 Census
    2. Diana Gale Matthiesen
    3. Matthew, I've done all the George STRAUBs (and variations) in PA in 1860 (this page is under construction and very rough): http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/PA/PACensusStraub/1860.htm The problem now becomes not that there is no likely candidate for your George, but that there's more than one. If only the 1880 census record showed children born before 1860! But it doesn't -- either there were none or they were married and gone by 1880. Point is, I don't see this being resolved until we also get George's 1870 record, where the children will give us the link between 1860 and 1880. Based on the birthplaces of the children (as given in the 1880 census), George was still in PA in 1870. I'll try to look up the other George's you list (the ones not in PA) -- and the ones in PA in 1870 ASAP, but I'm in a bit of a bind... My hard drive crashed (as in totally died) a week ago, and I've only just gotten the new drive installed. (It is soooo hard to shop without being able to go on the Internet!) It's going to take several days to get my system completely rebuilt, and I've only just installed my email software as the first priority. And ominously, this new drive is behaving strangely, so the problem may be more deep-rooted (as in bad mobo). If I don't reply to emails for awhile, please don't anyone take it personally. I'm shopping for a new computer...
