    3. Hi Garry, I am happy this was your ADAM STRAUB :-) What started this was a flurry of conversations on other lists about these BLM land grants. Some say you had to have military background to receive it, others say their passive Quaker ancestors received such land. Another said there was a particular area in Ohio (and other locations) where land was basically requested by New Englanders, by "mail", sight unseen, who immediately resold to land grabbers. And also, as I previously mentioned, you could request the land in the name of an ancestor and complete paperwork to prove your relationship and your right to receive their land grant. I would be interested to know if you decide to request the paperwork, what you do finally receive, to see if it is worthwhile. ...Or perhaps someone on this list may already know what you get. My grandfather JOHN CHAPMAN and gr grandfather JULIUS CHAPMAN, both received land in MN. Good Luck and good to hear from you, Diana O. Garry Heagy wrote: > Thanks, Diana. 2. Diana Owen
    3. Hello Straub Cousins :-) Hope this is helpful to someone. If you click on the Bureau of Land Management url at the end of my message, then click Land Patent Search at the top, enter Straub and Minnesota, then it will list the following land grants, with the same details for each of the following: Straub, Adam Straub, William MN - Waseca Co. - Issued 1/1/1866 Then you can click on each individual for more info. I understand you can request the actual record for about $40. And it may contain family info, as sometimes this land is granted to children in the name of their father, who may have had a military background and they must prove their relationship, and their right to this land grant, etc. Diana Owen http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/

    3. I just found the following online at GenealogyLibrary.com: Irwin Hoch Delong. 1926. "The Lineage of Malcolm Metzger Parker from Johannes Delang." Harry W. Parker, Pittsburgh, PA. On p. 49: =============================== DD. UNCONNECTED DELONGS These DeLongs are added here to lay the basis for possible future researches concerning the DeLangs in the United States and in Europe... =============================== On p. 52: =============================== c. IN NORTHAMPTON CO., PA. I. Abraham Delong, Lynn Township, Northampton Co., Pa., made his will December 21, 1755, and it was approved September 22, 1756. The will mentions a son Peter; other children are referred to but are not mentioned by name. Testator's wife "Catren" is named as sole executrix. The testator made his "mark," a capital D between his given name and his family name. The will is on file in the Court House, Easton, Pa., but it is not recorded. Witnesses: John Everett, Samuel Braun, Michel Baumgerter. Children: II. 1. Peter Delong, made his "mark," a capital D between his given name and his family name. 2. Math. Delong. 3. Abraham Delong. 4. John Delong. 5. Etwart Delong. 6. Rachel Delong, made her "mark." 7. Madelena Delong, wife of Henry Brethnig (Henrich Bretnich). 8. 1. [STRAUB-L] John George STRAUB in Centre Co., PA
    2. Diana Gale Matthiesen
    3. Matthew, I found the 1870 census record of your John George STRAUB (Jr.). It clears up most of the ambiguity regarding the childrens' names. I've added it to his family group sheet. http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/JohnGeorgeStraub-AnnaBeightol.htm I checked my 1850 census CD for BEIGHTOL in Centre Co., PA -- where we would expect to find Anna still living with her parents. There is an Ann BEIGHDOL, age 14, living with Daniel & Catharine BEIGHDOL, Centre Co. They are the only BEIGHDOLS in the county. There are many other variations of the name (viz., BECHDEL, BECHDOL, BECHTOL, BECKDEL, BECTOL, BEICHDOL) in the county. I checked all of them -- at least, all the ones I recognized as a variation of BEIGHTOL -- and none had an Ann even close to the right age. Snowshoe Twp., Centre Co., PA, p. 278A, 62/63, enumerated 7 Nov 1850: All born in Pa: Daniel Beighdol 38 M Farmer Catharine Beighdol 29 F Samuel Beighdol 20 M Farmer David Beighdol 16 M Farmer Ann Beighdol 14 F Joseph Beighdol 12 M Mathias Beighdol 10 M Jacob Beighdol 8 M Sarah Beighdol 6 F William Beighdol 6 M Ellen White 24 F I'd be happier if she were 15 or 16, but this is very likely your Anna. 3. Hi Everyone, I am new to the list and to STRAUB research. Actually, I am not sure that STRAUB belongs on my family tree and was wondering if anyone on the list has information about Barbara STRAUB, who was Charles STRAUB's daughter? She's listed as Mrs. Jacob STEFFEN in FISHER's book, Probate and Orphan Court Records of Snyder Co., PA, 1772-1855. I'd like to know about Jacob and Barbara's children. Did they have a daughter named Mary? My ancestor married Mary STEFFEY, and the following information is given about her in a FRANTZ family history: "John FRANTZ was married in what was at that time a part of Union (now Snyder) county to Mary STEFFEY, who was born in Union county, daughter of Jacob STEFFEY, and died in 1843. She was buried at Richfield, Union county. Mrs. FRANTZ was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church." I would appreciate any help or suggestions. Best Regards, Lola Allen

    3. Well then may explain why some of my Great uncles have been using their middle most of their life in the Friend family line. James Floyd went by Floyd, John Franklin went by Frank. Man what a pain with these name changes. Matthew D. Friend Diana Gale Matthiesen <DianaGM@dgmweb.net> wrote: P.S. to Matthew... I've become convinced that your George STRAUB was John George STRAUB, Jr., son of John George STRAUB, Sr. Both went by John in the 1850 census and George in the 1860 census. If you're familiar with German naming practices, you'll understand the reason for the shift from the first name to the middle name. If not, there's a good explanation at: http://www.kerchner.com/germname.htm The bottom line, and the reason I mention this, is that the name change means another change in the URl for George's family group sheet to: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/JohnGeorgeStraub-AnnaBeightol.htm Sometimes, the way I name family group sheets gets to be a pain because, when a name changes, the URL changes. 3. I think it's way kewl, Matthew! Among other things, it shows you never know what miniscule clue will turn out to be your biggest breakthrough... Item 1: Yes, in 1872, Ann and J. Allen (b. 1868-69) were toddlers and too young to go to school. Item 2: It gives us A. Etta's first name: Amelia, which changes the URL to her family group sheet to: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/JamesAWest-AmeliaEttaStraub.htm Item 3: It tells us George has more children than we knew about. Most importantly, it gives us the names of the three eldest children: James, William, and George, and these children -- born before 1860 -- identify which George STRAUB is their father in the 1860 census! In the 1860 census of Centre Co., PA, there is a George STROUP with wife, Anna, and three sons: James, William, and George. So now we have A. BEIGHTOL's first name, birthyear, and birthplace, namely: Anna, b. 1834/5, PA. This knowledge changes the URL of their family group sheet to: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/6/Straub/FGS/GeorgeStroup-AnnaBeightol.htm And as we know the father of this George STROUP is (John) George STROUP, also of Centre Co., PA, we are back another generation. Unfortunately, I do not know the wife or parents of this (John) George STRAUB/STROUP, who was born 1799/1800 in PA. He had daughters named Lydia and Amelia, which supports the connection to your George, who also had daughters named Lydia and Amelia. 3. It was no problem. I look at it this way, you never know what doing a search for someone else might lead you to in your own research! After a quick scan of the 1860 Union TWP, Brown co., OH census, I came up empty on Straubs or anything remotely resembling the Straub name. They could still be there somewhere and I just missed them though.
