It's pretty hard to hit a brick wall in the 20th century. <pun intended> So, not to despair. After checking the LDS, where the IGI has the same information you have, I decided to go for the census records, and I found them. The key one was 1910, which shows Edwin living with his parents, Charles & Sophia STRAUB, in Baltimore. It also shows us that Charles's father is the immigrant, so your STRAUB research in this country will be brief. Hanging over us is the lost 1890 census, but we are in luck because Charles was born in 1867, so we should be able to find him with his parents in the 1870 and 1880 census, and we do. His father is John Joseph (Johann Josef) STRAUB of Prussia (Germany), wife Sarah (b. VA). I've compiled family group sheets for Charles, his parents, and his children, including their census records. You can hook into them from Charles's page: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/Straub/FGS/CharlesJStraub-SophiaMAbron.htm Of course, there's much still to be done (e.g., finding the marriages records), but I hope this helps. If you think I've made any errors, please don't hesitate to point them out. Duhhhh. I just realized you said Edwin was born in Maryland -- not PA. I'm so fixated on Pennsylvania STRAUBs my mind is in a rut. Same suggestions hold, except that the PA census records at my site will probably not be any help to you. In a way you're lucky that Edwin was born in MD. There are far fewer STRAUBs in MD than in PA, so your search may not be as difficult. Diana Diana Gale Matthiesen wrote: > > Kris, > > Have you gotten a copy of Edwin's birth and death certificates? Kris, Have you gotten a copy of Edwin's birth and death certificates? These should tell you when and where he was born and when and where his parents were born. Once you know at least roughly where they were, then I would then go for finding their census records, beginning in 1930 and working backwards. Until you get back into the 1800s, you probably aren't going to connect with work already done. I have a STRAUB web site http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/Straub/StraubHome.htm with a good deal of census information, most of it in the early 1800s. I have, though, extracted all the STRAUB heads-of-households in 1900. http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/Straub/Census/PA-1900.htm There are many Charles'es, I'm afraid, which is why it would help greatly to know what county Edwin was born in. I am trying to find information on the ancestors of Edwin Warfield Straub -1903 -Baltimore MD 1994 Perry Hall, Md. I know his father was Charles Straub and his mother was Sophia Abron. I would like to find out where they were from and the dates of their birth and death. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated since I seem to have hit a brick wall with this group. Kristine Measel Kris God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called. Hi Listers: I have gotten this book from eBay called German Immigrant Servant Contracts - Registered at the Port of Philadelphia, 1817-1831 - Farley Grubb. I was just working on THOMPSON, and I decided to try and find William Henry Harrison THOMPSON (b. 20 Nov 1840 in Paris, Monroe Co., MO, son of Thomas THOMPSON) in the 1870 census. We know he was with his parents in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, then, in the 1880 census, he shows up living with his half-brother, Allen W. THOMPSON, in Mendocino Co., CA. In 1880, William is age 39, unmarried, and without children. Needless to say, there are many William THOMPSONs in the 1870 CA census (55, to be exact), and I haven't faced, yet, that I may have to check them all <groan>, but I did check the two most likely ones: the one in Sonoma Co. and the one in Mendocino Co. The one in Sonoma Co. is age 49 and born in KY, so he is not remotely "our" William; however, the one in Mendocino Co. may be. In the 1870 census of Anderson Twp., Mendocino Co., CA (p. 151B), we find: Thompson William 27 M Labourer 1500 Missouri ________ Julia 26 F Keeping House Iowa That's all, no children. William's age is off by two years (he should be 29), but we've all seen worse errors in the census. What we need is the marriage record and/or some other record from Mendocino Co. to confirm or reject whether this is "our" William. Just FYI. If you happen to be in a place where you have access to Mendocino records, please give a look-see. My search of Mendocino records will have to wait til I get back to California. Diana

Hello everyone I am hoping that someone may be able to point me in the right direction. I have recently been researching my great grandfather Louis Stroubel (also sometimes Lewis and sometimes Straubel). He was born in Bethnal Green in London in 1863. By the time of the 1881 census he was lodging with a family called Kreisburg. He married Elizabeth Worsfold in Whitechapel 1886. By the time of the 1891 census he was living with Elizabeth and two daughters (Elizabeth and Rose) in Artillery Street, Bethnal Green. In the 1901 census he was still at that address with Elizabeth and with their children (Elizabeth, Louisa, Emma Alice, Lewis, Margaret and Edith). He also had another daughter in 1901 called Lilian Maud. By trade he was a French Polisher. His daughter Emma Alice, my grandmother, emigrated to New Zealand with Walter Lee sometime around 1928. Apart from his wife and children, Louis is a bit of a mystery man to me. I have no idea of the whereabouts of any of his other family. Does any of the above ring any bells with anyone? If so, please contact me - perhaps we can help one another. I can certainly assist with information on the NZ family connection. Cheers Sue Jones
As some of you know, I've been gradually putting STRAUB/STROUP/etc. census records online at my web site: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/Straub/StraubHome.htm Years 1790 to 1850 for PA have been online for some time, but later years have been slow in coming. I have recently finished adding the index entries for PA in 1860 and 1900, which are now complete. That is, I've extracted all the STRAUB/STROUP names from the indices, as the first step. The next step is to extract the full records. Only 1850 is complete in this regard. The advantage of having a full extraction on one web page is that it can function as an every-name index if used in combination with your browser's Find feature. For example, if you have a Sophia STROUP born in 1845 in PA and you don't know her parents, check the 1850 page for a Sophia five years old. Doesn't alway work because the records are both inexact and incomplete, but it beats a head-of-household index any day. I have begun extracting the full records for 1860, and these counties are either finished or nearly finished: Carbon, Centre, Columbia, Delaware, Erie, Juniata, Snyder, and Susquehanna, plus scattered records for other counties. I have indexes to only six counties in 1870: Allegheny, Berks, Dauphin, Lancaster, and Luzerne/Lackawanna. The index entries are on the web page. I've completed a full extraction of Washington Township, Snyder County in 1870. I've been doing some "remodeling" of the census pages, so things are bit "rough." Rather than waiting til things are "polished up," I wanted you to know that I've completed the extraction of the index entries for 1860 and 1900. I've also added a new feature I call "Timeline Tables." I'm finding these very helpful for "sorting things out." I've begun tables for PA, OH, and MI. All these census pages and tables can be reached from this hub: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/Straub/Straub-Census.htm Good hunting, Diana
I have read most of your postings with interest, but think it is possible that my ancestors were from some very isolated branch of a very large family. Anyway maybe someone could help with a couple of problems. My mother's maiden name was Straub. Her father was John J. Straub (I don't know what the J. stands for) who was born in January 1901 in Cincinnati, Oh. John was the youngest of 12 born to John J. Straub Sr and Katherine Thullen. Beyond this point names and places get a little fuzzy. John Sr was born in Galveston, Texas in 1852. Up until a couple of weeks ago I felt sure John Sr. was the second son and third child of Ignatz and Caroline Straub. The problem developed when I found that Ignatz married Caroline (maiden name? of Kropp) in 1853 in Cincinnati. Secondly I can find no record of any Ignatz Straub in Texas in the 1850 Census (John's older sister Sophie was born in Texas in 1849 and it appears his older brother William was also born there in 1851, but that may be iffy). In fact, Ignatz doesn't come up anywhere on the 1850 Census Index (of course people missing from a census or an index doesn't surprise me, though it makes the search a little harder). Oddly enoug! h, I have seen the Family Search notice of a Carolina Kropp marrying a John Peter in Comal, TX in 1846. And from the 1880 Census, after Ignatz passed away, I know that Caroline was the mother of Sophie, since Sophie's daughter was living with Caroline and lists the girl (Mena? Kinkel) as a granddaughter. So I'm left with two possibilities, my great grandfather was adopted by Ignatz, or Ignatz and Caroline were married twice. That the second option is possible I bring up the aforementioned Katherine Thullen: her parents were married in Germany in 1845 and in Cincinnati in 1847. Has anyone else come across such a problem? Thanks mark
Mark, I don't see any specific connection but note that I have three male Straubs born 1835 to 1839 in Hamilton, OH, who could have had sons that later produced your John J. Straub, born 1901. There are probably other male Straubs from this family that I am not aware of. If you ever get earlier clues, you might wish to check back with me. Well folks I hve saved several Straup messages lately and now I shall respond generally. I had Straup, Stroups in my lines. They too lived in Snyder, and Center Co., Penn. in the 1800s. Some of the names they connected with (spouses) were Catharine, Elizabeth Riggs, Shatterly, Fryburger, Hanes, Riggs and Frasier. My Straups moved to Clermont Co., Ohio near Cincinnati and married into various families there. My particular Straup married a Reader and some of the descendants moved west to Tipton, Cedar Co., Iowa. Does any of this connect with any of yours? I can be much more specific if need be. Ginger in AZ
Hi Judy, I don't know if I can help or not. I live in what is now the Region of Waterloo, Ontario. Close to where I live, which is about 10 miles from the city of Waterloo, I've encountered the name, STRUB. He's a concrete contractor, who actually put the foundation in for an addition we did about 5 years ago. I only thought of it recently, but intend to contact the family and see if there's any connection to the PA Straub family. (or your family). The telephone lists 2 Straub's, numerous Strub's, 1 Stroop, and 1 Strupp.
