Hi Listers! I was hoping someone who was familiar with the big Stowell book could answer a question for me. As I was looking through a microfilm copy of the book, it mentions that the Connecticut line of STOWELLs were not as well documented, and therefore still a mystery. I have a feeling my STOWELL line comes out of this Connecticut line. Has anyone done any research on this line and if they have, can they point me in the right direction. I appreciate any help in this direction. Liz Parmalee
I just got back from England and will be posting photos shortly. Found this article from Friday. It appears that they are getting ready to do some restoration work on the gatehouse. More to come..... -Matthew Stowell Last Updated: Friday, 18 July, 2003, 13:57 GMT 14:57 UK E-mail this to a friend Printable version Endangered buildings in the West Arnos Vale is a candidate for restoration Ten buildings from the West have been added to English Heritage's endangered list, bringing the total to more than 100 in the region. New listings include the Orangery at Tyntesfield, North Somerset and the church of St Giles at the deserted MoD village of Imber in Wiltshire. The Hospital of St John in Spitalgate Lane, Cirencester and the Gatehouse at Cothelstone Manor, Somerset are also listed. All the buildings feature in the charity's Buildings at Risk (BAT) Register 2003, revealed on Friday. In conjunction with the list, BBC2 has launched Restoration, where viewers vote for the chance to decide which buildings in their area they want saved NEW LISTINGS IN THE WEST St Thomas a Beckett Church, Pensford Orangery, Tyntesfield Brandy Bottom Colliery, Pucklechurch Hospital of St John, Cirencester Manor House Farm, Meare Westonzoyland Pumping Station Gatehouse at Cothelstone Manor West Luccombe Packhorse Bridge Ironstone Mine Ventilation Shaft, Chargot Wood, Luxborough St Giles, Imber Restoration will highlight 30 buildings in peril, including two from the West: the Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol, and the Whitfield Tabernacle chapel in south Gloucestershire. Arnos Vale is a Victorian cemetery that was recently threatened with closure, but is currently in the process of being bought and restored by the city council after a sustained local campaign. Whitfields Tabernacle in Kingswood was built in 1741, but has not been used for worship for many years. A feasibility study had been commissioned to consider alternative uses, and a trust set up after a recent fire. The BAT Register forms the core of Restoration, which will be screened on BBC Two from early August. Celebrity advocates will argue why the historic gems are worthy of being chosen, as they did in last year's Great Britons TV series.

A friend of my aunt saw an article in a paper about a teacher who did genealogy with his class and they had excerpts from her diary. I would dearly love to find the original or get at least a photocopy of it. I absolutely believe that the original should be reunited with my family as we are the only descendants of Abbie. Her other son Leroy never married or had children. But will understand if the owner doesn't want to part with it. Dear Liz, Good news! I think I found your Joseph D Stowell and family! Looking at the 1850 census, enumerated in October for New York in Steuben in Orange Co on page 286 I found: Joseph D Stowell, age 28, Shoemaker, born in Connt. Betsey Stowell, age 23, born NY Clark J Stowell, age 4, born NY George Stowell, age 1, born NY Only other fellow under the name of Joseph Stowell shown as born in CT was aged 36 and also a Shoemaker. Wife Caroline (middle initial H?) age 25 born MS. Daughters Lauretta (looked like that name) age 8 born MS and Frances E age 6 born MS. Found him in 1850 census enumerated November 9th for IL for Bureau in Berlin Co, page 192. I didn't find him in my Stowell CD btw. Hope this helps!! He died in 1925 and was married to Mary Ann Budry (born London England). He died in Rochester, Monroe County, New York. Parents were ASRIAZ STOWELL and PHOEBE ANN MEYERS STOWELL. His children were: Ellmore (married to Edith) Julia (married to Benjamin Ling and Daniel Shannon) Harriet (married to Ross Manuel) Ida (married to William Sleep) Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. I have seen Otsego referenced before, but I have no connection as to how that place connects the Stowells to Rochester as of yet. Thank you. Marie
I have a Stowell CD that was sold to me by another Stowell. I'm pretty sure it has a lot of the infamous book material in it. I am willing to search it for info you might need. Also, if you want info added I'll put it in there. Hi! I was wondering if someone would do a lookup for me in the big Stowell book. I am looking for a Joseph D. Stowell born about 1822 in Connecticut. Thanks so much for any help any one can provide.I would be glad to share anything I had or help someone else out. Liz Parmalee, Knoxville, TN
Hi, Here is a shot in the dark. I think that I have found my gr-grandfather Wm. Frank Stowell (age 14) living with Daniel Howard in the 1870 US Census in Reading, Schuyler County, NY. I think his mom is Betsey Stowell, also living in Reading, Schuyler County, NY. I think this is true because on his death certificate, his mom is listed as Elizabeth. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I would be glad to share what I have. Liz (Stowell) Parmalee, Knoxville, TN
Has anyone ever stepped forward and said they had CDs for certain censuses or had a subscription to a site that charges you for census lookups? If you are such a person, reply to this. That way folks could just contact you directly rather than you wading through list emails and doing searches on the fly. Just a suggestion. I personally haven't found my ancestors on this site, but maybe you will! http://www.findagrave.com/ The above web address is totally supported by volunteers who go out to cemetaries and document the internments. I know 4.4 million internments sounds like a lot, but we all know there's more of them out there waiting to be recorded! I would strongly encourage that if you have spare time to go out to your local cemetaries and help add to the ever growing list. Before you do though, make sure you don't repeat another researchers work by checking the cemetary for which internments have already been done. Good hunting!
