I am pretty sure that he is not listed in the WHH book about STOWELLs, and his death cert. lists his mom as Elizabeth Stowell and his father unknown. Does anybody have him listed in their database or have any ideas where I might go from here? Thanks for any help given

One who was born 12/20/1809 in Gray, ME. and the other b. 12/20/1817 which you referred to. Although its odd that both dates are December 20, but different years. Do you happen to know if there is a wife buried with the Reuben Stowell in Brownville who died 10-22-1848? If this Reuben is my 3x gr grandfather, his wife's name I believe was Abigail Thompson.

I've been sitting here following the lines.. and have come to the conclusion that this information has to be wrong. Reuben's last name was Stowell and not Rangton. If this Reuben Stowell was born in Grey, ME, and his father's name was Reuben, then he is the son of my 3x great grandfather, Reuben Stowell, b. 10-10-1769, the son of Samuel Stowell and Patience Butman (Bootman). Samuel Stowell and his family was the only line of Stowell's that moved to Gray, ME. (At least the that I've found)... Reuben did have several brothers that also lived in Gray, so I wasn't sure when I found this Reuben if he was really the son of my Reuben b. 1769. Reuben married several times, one of his wives being Abigail Thompson. I believe he was also married to Abigail's sister Lucy, and possibly also to an Abigail Delano. I have had a very difficult time tracking this Reuben Stowell, and I just recently found the Reuben Stowell b. 12/20/1809 that married Olive Berr! y. I believe his parents are Reuben Stowell b. 1769 and Abigail Thompson. The last place I've tracked my Reuben to is New Gloucester, ME. Does any of this fit in with your information?

After putting this family aside for a couple years due to a frustrating lack of clues, I am back to trying to get it in order. Persis was the daughter of Hezekiah STOWELL and Hepzibah Persis RICE of Petersham, Worcester, MA then Guilford, VT who ended up in Jericho/Bainbridge, NY about 1785. He was one of the Vermont Sufferers given land in NYS. Persis STOWELL married John CRAWFORD in the Guilford, VT vicinity or in Bainbridge, Chenango Co. NY. John may have died about 1820, but this is a guess only and it is possible he simply had left the area. Persis died 1839 likely in Chenango Co., NY. She and other STOWELLs are buried in the East Side Cemetery in Afton, Chenango Co., NY. The had a large family of children enumerated in the 1810 and 1820 census for Jericho/Bainbridge, NY. The most likely children are Levi, Jane, possibly Andrew, Joseph, Persis, Abigail, Rebecca, John and Betsey. I have 1 female and 2 males without any name. Abigail and John died as young adults in 1828. Jane was married to Charles Lee Grinnell and died in Wellsboro, Tioga, PA. Persis married William PIKE (my direct line) of Colesville, Broome Co., NY. Betsey married Amos WILMOT and they removed to Sparta, Knox Co., IL. Rebecca d. 1864 likely lived in the same location, but I have no clue as to her husband's name. A number of these interrelated families worked in the lumbering industry in Southern, NYS and northern PA near the Susquehanna River and may have shipped lumber to Baltimore, MD and elsewhere. Would appreciate added details and happy to correspond with people interested in these families. Margaret Scheffler

They were attempting to figure out what to do with the Stowell records and artifacts. Not sure what ever happened to them. There was even talk of restoring the first Stowell homestead in Hingham until it was gutted by fire in about 1930. No Association exists today that I know of.....
