This photo says; Aunt Alice [and] Grandma Walker. I also saw what I believe is a large 12 inch family group picture (12-20 people)without any names but it looked like the family of these girls. Apparantly someone is getting rid of the Stowell/Walker photos because I found a Willis Walker family photo in the batch as well. Amy [email protected]

    2. Dear All on the list I thought that I may just post this again in the hope that someone may have some links to the Stowell Family who originated from Braddan on the Isle of Man, and have in the last one hundred and something years put down some roots in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. These roots stem from a William Stowell who was the son of Kermod (Kermotte) Stowell. I look forward to hearing from anyone with a connection or information regarding these elusive lot. I agree that Eliphalet is quite an uncommon name. Since I only learned about him yesterday, I will have to process all of this and see what makes sense. If only census records prior to 1850 gave us some more significant information! I will let you know if I find anything of interest, but it sounds like the STOWELL family has been looked into long before me, and probably more thoroughly. Thanks! [BTW...1840 census has 50-60 yo white male in GRC STOWELL HH in Madison Co., NY; this is probably Eliphalet, also; birth date 1780-1790, which agrees with the 1850 census.]

I have it as abt 1775 in Abington. I do not think he would have been born in Vermont as his parents Samuel(my 5g grandfather) and Hannah Lambert only lived in Massachusetts. “He lived at Fort Hill St., Hingham, Weymouth (1763), Abington (1773), Bridgewater (1794), and Plainfield." This is from the same source mentioned above about his father Samuel Stowell. It is possible that I have him with the wrong parents as there are some errors in the Stowell Genealogy. If it is correct it would go Eliphalet5, Samuel4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Samuel1 on the Stowell side. Eliphalet was married either in Ashfield or in Plainfield which would make me think Samuel is his father as most of Samuel's children ended up in Hampshire County. Samuel Stowell died in Plainfield. Eliphalet probably moved to New York by 1813/1814. Eliphalet's wife was Sybyl Rogers, a descendent ! from a Rogers on the Mayflower I believe. Her family was from Ashfield. Her father was Gershom Rogers and her mother was Abigail King. Now that I think of it, I always wondered where his name came from as his siblings have such common names like Abigail, Caleb, and David. Could it be possible that we have Eliphalet Phineas with the wrong parents? We probably need to check the Abington Vital Records to see if we can find his birth there to confirm it. I do have his marriage from the Ashfield Vitals and from Shepperd's Cummington and Plainfield marriages.

I realized that I had not read enough of the Rootsweb posts prior to my own, because I located the same information about Elizabeth and Rhoda MINNICK, but that is all I have "found" so far. As I said, this is not my family, but I am trying to research it for a friend, and I will certainly pass on any information you can provide. Do you happen to know a source for Eliphalet STOWELL born 1775 in Massachusetts as I have read on some posts? The 1850 census of Antwerp, Jefferson Co., NY lists his birthplace as VT and his age as 64, which would make him born ca 1785. I know sometimes the person talking with the census enumerator was not always sure of dates and places for all members of the household (or name spelling for that matter!), so the census may be wrong. I would like to know your thoughts. Much thanks!

    3. WFT is the designation for World Family Tree estimated dates I believe. Usually the estimated range is so large that I find them rather useless, particularly with more recent designations. I checked my recent Plantagenet Ancestry (2004) by Richardson and did not find DECOVENSTONE listed. There were 3 page references for de STAWELL or SEAWELL but a cursory check of the three rather large pages in small print I did not find the references. The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants by Gary Boyd Roberts had no references to either name. The Plantagenet Ancestry on page 185 made reference to Dorothy CAREW, wife of John Stowell and Hugh Pollard, Knt. 3. please note I am not any kind of an expert [i.e. no titles / degrees nor certificates] ... but will impart with my own learned observations of the past 30+ yrs ... WFT = World Family Tree ... Est. = Estimate, Estimated, Estimation ... it is suppose to be an estimate, time frame for when the event "could" have happened ... which in most cases "should" be taken with a grain of salt ... as usually the time span is greatly over exaggerated, AND is badly abused more than not ... I have seem cases where one or more child/ren was estimated to have been born "after" one and/ or both parents were "estimated" to have died ... sure "A" child [or a set of twins] could have been born nine months after the father died ... but NOT several years AFTERWARDS :( and especially NOT if the mother was estimated to have already died ... the worst case for not paying any attention to it ... it can and "has" cause many amateur researchers to SKIP generation(s) when trying to piece lineages together WITHOUT any documentation and/ or the sighting of any :( Christian names were almost always duplicated from generation to generation ... and often multiplied within the same generations [i.e. several 1st cousins with the exact same name] ... and then to compound the issue even further ... it was a very common practice in some families and/ or regions of the world for the next child to be born, to receive the same name as an older sibling that had died just prior to their birth ... i.e. two children within the same family unit with the exact same name ... I have even seen where these exaggerated dates were shown to have been applied to an infant that "had" actually died shortly after it's birth ... and then [a shotty amateur researching habit] someone came along and "claimed" that this infant was their direct line ancestor :( needless to say ... once that info get's burned onto those CD's that are sold ... there is no way of correcting and/ or changing that info, and there by the errors are replicated on into the next millennium and beyond :( I usually discard this type of info when I see that WFT insignia ... too many errors are almost always attached to it some where along the line ... the story line info did make for interesting reading, although noted, that there was no mention of any sources i.e. author/s, book title/s, page number/s etc. :( and so in closing, just another thought to ponder ... if entering the pearlly gates some day was based on ones genealogical research endeavors ... I sure would hate to be dodging all those who were forced to make "U" turns ... and or being responsible for there mishaps ... Ken - hdpth-DNA again please note I am not any kind of an expert [i.e. no titles / degrees nor certificates] ... but will impart with my own learned observations of the past 30+ yrs ... > [Original Message] > From: Tim Stowell <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Date: 2/25/2006 10:42:59 PM > Subject: Re: [STOWELL-L] STOWELL - ADAM DE STAWELL > > At 07:02 PM 2/25/06 -0500, Laurien Fan wrote: > >Just going through my files and would like to share this. > > > > ID: I0786 > > > > Name: Sir Adam I. 3. Just going through my files and would like to share this. · ID: I0786 · Name: Sir Adam I. DECOVENSTONE · Sex: M · Birth: WFT Est. 1070-1124 · Death: WFT Est. 1108-1202 · Note: Sir Adam was the first Norman knight that we know of in this family. The name appears to be settled by William the Conquerer at Cothelstone and Stawell in Moorlinch or(Merlinch) co. Somerset from the latter place which the family took its name. Sir Adam may have had a brother Pagan, as according to record there was a person by that name alive in 1090 As far as I can figure the founder of this family is the Norman Knight Adam , who came over with William the Conquerer in 1066 and his services were rewarded by giving him the manor deCovenstone or DeCothelstone" and the Manor of "deStawelle" in Moorlinch, County Somerset In 1633 Gerard wrote;"The Manor of Cothelstone dates long back to before the Conquest of 1066, when a Saxon King and Queen are said to have been its founders. They secluded themselves within its walls in fulfillment of a vow taken at the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem . It has more the appearance of a cloister than a knightly castle such as the Warrior, Sir Adam might have desired." Cothelstone is a remarkable place on acct. of its great antiquity, being one of the oldest homes in England, sitting six miles from the Bristol Channel, in Quantock, County Somerset. It came into possession of the Stawell family in 1066. At that time the manor consisted of a beautiful and extensive mansion with many buildings belonging to it and immediately cloistered around it, including the Church, eleven farm houses and fifty four cottages. This manor has been retained in the Stawell/Stowell family in an unbroken line, from oldest to oldest son from 1066 to 1633. On the summit is a round tower, nothing whatsoever known about its builder or the date of its erection. From it a magnificent view is obtained, said to be the most extensive in England. The Manor of """de Stawelle" also dates back to old Saxon times when it was known as"Estwalla" or Eastern spring. Originally these Norman knights were known only by their Christian names, but gradually they adopted for purposes of identification, as their surnames, the name of the Manor or Estate where they lived. Thus Sir Adam changed his to Sir Adam de Covestone. This was soon changed to Sir Adam de Stawelle. The title branch inherited by the eldest son was very influential in the 12th, 13th,14th and 15th centuries and in time of Civil Wars was the most prominent family in South Western England, as they acquired by marriage or purchase some 26 additional manors or estates with the church livings and advowsons that accompanied them. They built one of the largest mansion houses in England. They were Royalists and staunch supporters of the Stuarts. When the Parliamentary party and Cromwall came into power the Estates were confiscated and their mansion house and church badly damaged and Sir John Stawell was imprisoned for several years in The Tower of London, living in poverty with his health completely broken down. Under Charles II a restoration party was made of such property as remained and his son Ralph as recompense was created on 15 January 1683, a Baron under the title of "Lord Stawell of Somerton", named after one of the other manors. Later, when the title of Baron lapsed owi! ng to the failure of a male issue it was continued by a special Act of Parliament upon the daughter Mary as Baroness Stawell, 21 May 1760, with the right of inheritance by her male heirs, but after a few generations the title of Baron again became extinct because of lack of male issues. Some of the younger sons were created Knights in their own right through their ability and prominence and thus acquired the Title of Sir and served as members of Parliament and in other high offices.
