How did you know him? His father and mother came from Northern New York. I would be glad to hear from you if you are able to give me more inforation. Dear Tim: In my case, two descendants have a better grip on my sleeves than 4096 ancestors. Isn't real life pesky sometimes?! I want to reiterate that if/when you do return to the Stowell book indexing project, I am happy to do another 'letter'. Stay well... Mary Jo C. Hi Tim, I remember doing several letters of the STOWELL index a few years back. Did the letter's we finished get online? Somehow, I thought I had read the index was online completed. Hopefully I kept the file if you need the letters I did again. For any interested, I am a descendant of Hezekiah STOWELL and wife Hepzibah Persis RICE who married 1758 in Worcester MA through his daughter Persis of Bainbridge, Chenango Co. New York. Persis STOWELL married John CRAWFORD in 1819. Margaret Scheffler ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Jo C. What I started with the help of others was putting the Stowell portion of the index of the book on-line - but life crowded in and that project has gone into limbo, not for lack of wanting to do it, but rather time to do it. Hi Tim, I have not been staying up to date on the Stowell RootsWeb for a while, but the email caught my eye about my great-grandfather's bio! After all the work he did on the book tracing people down, I have no idea where my three cousins are at this point. My Dad was Eldon Stowell, and he and his brother, Averill were WHH grandchildren. Averill's children are the missing ones. I did a couple of posts quite a while ago looking for updates, but apparently they are not involved in the Roots resource! Were you at one time, or currently working on the next volume of information about the Stowell's on CD? I would be interested in adding information and obtaining a copy - Thanks! Thanks Tim for the USGENWEB search engine. I've used usgenweb but haven't come across that search engine. I'm sure going to put it to use. Laurien
Here's an alternative for ya'll - For a specific other state or special project - http://www.usgenweb-search.us/ (not all states are available but soon will be) I found it quite interesting as these just focus on web sites associated with the various USGenWeb Project sites - which depending upon your query can be more specific perhaps than Ancestry, Google or some other search engine. I know for myself that my family tended to hop across county lines rather than the lines redrawn around them as the census years rolled by. Perhaps your missing family is sitting just over a county line - where you may have not been looking. Tim Stowell
The author of the Stowell book most commonly referred to by list members has this bio on Wikipedia - William Henry Harrison Stowell (July 26, 1840 April 27, 1922) was a nineteenth century congressman, merchant and industrialist from Virginia, Vermont, Massachusetts, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Born in Windsor, Vermont, Stowell attended public schools in Boston, Massachusetts as a child and graduted from Boston Latin School in 1860. He engaged in mercantile pursuits before moving to Virginia in 1865 and became collector of internal revenue for the fourth district in 1869. Stowell was elected a Republican to the United States House of Representatives in 1870, serving from 1871 to 1877 and was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1876. He moved to Appleton, Wisconsin in 1880 and engaged in paper manufacturing and later moved to Duluth, Minnesota in 1886 and engaging in paper and steel manufacturing. Stowell was president of the Manufacturers Bank of West Duluth from 1889 to 1895 and was a correspondent in Paris, France for various newspapers. He moved to Amherst, Massachusetts in 1914 where he died on April 27, 1922. Stowell was interred in Woodlawn Cemetery in New York City, New York. -------- He sure seemed to get around. I have not done a lot on my Stowell side, even though it is my maiden name because my gr grandfather, William Frances Stowell (Frank), was the town drunk and soon after he died my gr grandmother remarried, although my grandfather kept his father's name. I will dig out what I have and see if this connects. This has been a brick wall for me.
