The Stowells in Afton/Bainbridge were so-called Vermont Sufferers. The following Stowells from Vermont were granted land in the towns of Afton and Bainbridge in March 1786: Hezekiah Stowell, and his son Asa Stowell (see page 95 of The Stowell Genealogy). Stowell Island in the Susquehanna River, part of Hezekiah's original land grant, is named for him. Many Bainbridge Stowells are listed in the Stowell Genealogy, including "129 Josiah Stowelll resided in Bainbridge, Afton and Smithboro, N.Y. He was a farmer. Had saw mills on the Susquehanna River...Josiah went to Lanesboro, N. Penn. in search of a supposed hidden treasure...He was accompanied by Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, who had previously worked for Josiah Stowell on his farm in in his saw mill. Afton and Bainbridge have town cemeteries, but there is also Guy Cemetery along State Route 7, southwest of Afton. Perhaps one should look among the family of Josiah Stowell for a link to Brigham Young. Edward Swenson, Trumansburg, NY [email protected] Here is the list of graves in GUY CEMETERY (copied from the internet). Located in the Town of Afton, Chenango County, New York on the east side of the main road (Route 7) between the village of Afton and the village of Nineveh in Broome County on the west side of the Susquehanna River. Markers copied March 1990 by J. Kelsey Jones. This a very old burial ground with many plain markers of native stone bearing no inscriptions. There would appear to be about thirty five native field stones placed as markers. The oldest dated marker bears the date of 1798 for Abigail Bridgman. There are four rows of markers. Row one begins on the south edge of the cemetery and the markers are copied from west (road side) to east. Anything in parenthesis is added information by the compiler for clarification. Single spacing of type indicates names appearing on one marker or monument. Several footmarkers have been removed from their original location and placed in the same row as the headstones which they belong to. Spellings are as they appear. Anything in brackets [ ] is added information by Internet poster for clarification. Row 1: D. T. three plain fieldstones W. T. M. (perhaps footmarker for William T. Myers) Minor monument: Wm. D. Hi Tim, Hezekiah Stowell and wife Hepzibah Persis Rice are direct ancestors of mine. They apparently died in the Afton/Bainbridge area somewhere near 1800, but you are correct in that they had some descendants were apparently involved with the Mormons. I do think my direct line through Persis likely remained Presbyterian or Congregationalists. Below please see the reference from my database on WorldConnect. All my notes and sources from my primary database are there and represent the research I did a few years back. I am always happy to make contact with others connected to this family and to find additional primary source material. Some of the DAR records on this family are confused as some of the daughters. Persis and Polly have been mixed up at times. I did find a deed in Chenango Co. that listed all of Hezekiah's children with the names of their spouses -- a wonderful help in straightening out who went with who. http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mscheffler&id=I1775 Margaret Scheffler ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tim Stowell" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 01, 2007 1:19 AM Subject: [STOWELL] Stowells in Afton/Bainbridge NY > Would someone on the list please let me know the names of some of the > Stowells who lived in Afton / Bainbridge area of New York? > > I believe some of these folks went west with Brigham Young. > > I'm trying to track down someone from that clan but can't figure out the > connection since I don't know the names of any of the folks from there. > > Tim Stowell > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

I have an Ebenezer Stowell and wife Marry Foote Goff that both died in Afton. He is an Isreal desendent. For info go to http:// freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~stowell/index.html/wc03_474.htm I also have a Hezekiah Stowell who died in Afton. I have the following notes for him: Lived at Lancaster, Worcester, and Petersham, Mass., Guilford, VT., and Bainbridge, NY. Served in the Revolution. Also lived on 40 acres on an island in the Susquehanna River known as Stowell Island. “Hezekiah Stowel, to whom reference has been made, was a Vermont sufferer, and came in from Guilford in that State in 1786, and settled at Bettsburgh, on 220 acres on lot 63, on the east side of the river, and was the pioneer settler on the site of that village. He subsequently removed to the west side of the river, where he is buried, probably at the time he made the exchange with Elnathan Bush. He lived and died in the locality. It is not known that he lived on the place exchanged with Bush in Bainbridge. His children were:--- Asa, who settled at Bettsburgh, on the place now owned and occupied by Enos M. Johnston where in 1788, he kept the first inn, in a log building which stood on the river bank, opposite the residence of Mr. Johnston and who married Hannah, daughter of Samuel Bixby, of Guilford, Vt., and died there November 3, 1826, aged 66, and his wife September 18, 1850, aged 88; Elijah, who settled on the west side of the river on the farm now occupied by _______ Chamberlain, and who died childless, in advanced years, while on a visit to a relative in Pennsylvania, and whose wife Rebecca, died here February 25, 1837, aged 70; Betsey, who married Daniel Dickinson, who settled in Guilford and afterwards at Seneca Falls; Isabel, who married Elisha Stowel, who settled at the ferry about two miles below Bettsburgh; Polly, who married Calvin Stowel, who settled on a farm adjoining Asa Stowel's on the south; Levi who settled on the homestead on the west side of the river, and afterwards in advanced life, moved to the east side, to the farm now occupied by James Pool, and died at Seneca Falls while visiting relatives there; and Sally, who married Charles Grinnells, and settled on the homestead farm on the west side of the river, where she died. His only grandchild living in the county is Gratia Ann, wife of Gustavus Greene, in Afton, daughter of Levi. Four great-grandchildren are living in the county, Abel, Nathan and Jenette, wife of Henry Jones in Afton, and Hannah, wife of Charles Bixby in Bainbridge.” Also try http://www.rootsweb.com/~nychenan/1880-16.htm#D AND http:// freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~stowell/index.html/wc05_115.htm Matthew Stowell Team 8-2, Social Studies Ann Simpson Davis Middle School Dublin City Schools On Jul 1, 2007, at 1:19 AM, Tim Stowell wrote: > Would someone on the list please let me know the names of some of the > Stowells who lived in Afton / Bainbridge area of New York? > > I believe some of these folks went west with Brigham Young. > > I'm trying to track down someone from that clan but can't figure > out the > connection since I don't know the names of any of the folks from > there. > > Tim Stowell > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to STOWELL- > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes > in the subject and the body of the message
