She was living with daughter Laura Stowell Chapman and had moved from NY to MI in 1834 with the family, where she died 2 years later. STOWELL, Abigail, Hartford Courant, Issue Sep 26, 1836, died Aug 18 at age 79. Exact obit says: At Prarie Ronde, Calamazoo County, Michigan, August 18th, Mrs. Abigail Stowell, aged 79, relict of the late Dr. Oliver Stowell , formerly of Stafford, Conn. STOWELL, Abigail (widow), Columbian Register, Issue Oct 8, 1836 , age 79. STOWELL, Abigial (Widow), Hartford Patriot & Democrat, Issue Sep t 24, 1836, died Aug 18 at age 79. The Stowell Genealogy book has Abigail dying on Aug 18 1856 at a ge 99. She obviously died 20 years earlier, same day (Aug 18) but in 1836 at age 79. And she is listed as "widow" on two of the three entries, and "relict" in the third, which also indicates surviving spouse. I am still searching for Oliver's death date and place, but obviously it was prior to Aug. of 1836. I suspect it was even prior to the 1830 census, because Abigail is living with her daughter Laura and family as a widow in that census in NY. Do you have any locations on Dr. Oliver for 1810, 1820 and/or 1830 please? I've located some other Olivers, but they have all been discounted as being Dr. Oliver. Thanks for any info you may have. The Stoel spelling makes sense. I think this is Eliphalet plus a possible another family: 1810 Lebanon Madison Co., NY page 819 Stoel E. 4 males under 10 (sons Porter, Phineas & ?) 1 male 16 - 26 1 male 26 - 45 (Eliphalet) 1 female 0-10 (daughter Sybil) 2 females 26-45 (Sybel) On the next page there is also an R. Stoel and P. Stoel (?). It is possible that Warren Stowell had 3 sons. Warren and Mary Kingman were married in 1782. Alpheus was born abt 1785. From census, Eliphalet was born about 1786. He really could not have been born much later than that as he was married to Sybel Rogers in 1804. There are two Warren Stowell's in the 1790 census: 1790 Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA, page 73 Warren Stowell 1 male over 16 2 males under 16 1 female 1790 Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA, page 74 Warren Stowell 1 male over 16 3 males under 16 5 females I don't think that most of Eliphalet's children were born in Evans Mills as the Stowell Genealogy states. Sources: 1814 - a Eliphalet Stowell resided at Lenox, Madison Co., NY -- per the book - Pioneers of Madison County, NY by Tuttle 1820 Sherburne, Chenango Co., NY, enumeration date 7 August Elipatet Stowell 3 males 0-10, (Darius, Phineas, Porter) 1 male 10-16, (Gershom) 1 male 26-45, (Eliphalet) 1 female 0-10, (Drusilla) 1 female 10-16, (Sibyl) 1 female 16-26 (?) 1830 - Amboy, Oswego Co., NY page 269 Eliphalet Stowell 1 male under 5 (Willard) 1 male 10-15 (Darius) 1 male 40-50 (Eliphalet) 1 female 5-10 (Josephine) 1 female 15-20 (Drusilla) 1 female 30-40 (?) 1840 Madison Co., NY, page 1 (no town) G. R. C. Stowell 1 male 20-30 (Gershom) 1 male 50-60 (probably Eliphalet) 2 females under 5 (Mary 1838 & Amelia 1840) 1 female 15-20 (sister Josephine?) 1 female 20-30 (Mahala) 1850 Antwerp, Jefferson Co., NY, page 209 Gershom Stowell, age 34, farmer, born NY Joseph age 6 NY Mahala age 30 NY Mary 12 NY Amelia age 10 NY Eliphalet, age 64 VT It appears that Eliphalet lived with his son Gersom R. C. Stowell after the death of his wife Sybel. The Stowell Genealogy says that Eliphalet died in Amboy, Oswego Co. NY but in 1850 he was living in Antwerp, Jefferson Co., NY. By 1855 I don't think any of his children were living in Amboy. Eliphalet may have died before 1854 as son Gershom and family are found in the 1854 Richland, Jones Co., IA State Census without Eliphalet. Eliphalet P. Stowell served as a Corporal during the War of 1812 -- 129th (Farnham's) Regiment, NYS Militia, from Cazenovia, Madison Co., NY. In 1800 census only one son. He was in Cummington by 1793 as he is listed in a tax record there. Alpheus's last name is spelled Stoel in some of the Cummington records. He married Hannah Bates of Cummington on Dec. 24, 1804 by Rev. James Biggs. They had a daughter named Irena born 1/10/1805 in Cummington (also spelled Stoel in records). In Braintree, (Norfolk Co.)MA town records, 1782, Warren Stowell of Bridgewater and Mary Kingman of this town filed their intent to marry. The New England Genealogical Historical Society has on their website: Warren Stowell married Mary Kingman 27 Feb. 1782, Brockton, Plymouth Co., MA, church record, Fourth Church of Christ of Bridgewater, now the First Congregational Church of Brockton. I had thought if Eliphalet was Warren's son, that he was probably the oldest. On the positive side -- Eliphalet runs with being an odd name as does Alpheus! 1800 Cummington, Hampshire Co., MA, page 880 Warren Stowel 1 male under 10 1 male 26-44 1 female 26-44 This son would fit the unnamed son you mentioned born c. 1790. There is a Seaman's Protection Certificate Register database that has: Alpheus Stowell born Braintree, MA age 30 issued 03/31/1815 Customs district: New Haven Port Certificate #21 This would fit Alpheus Stowell - born Braintree where Mary Kingman was from and born about 1785, after their marriage in Feb. 1782. Do you have any more info on Alpheus? There seems to be quite a few errors in the Stowell Genealogy, especially regarding Eliphalet. There are a couple of other Stowell's that were in Madison and Jefferson Co., NY area. An Enoch Stowell that seems to be from NH and then an Oliver Stowell in Antwerp (Jefferson Co., NY). There was also an Oliver Stowell in the 1800 Grenwich, Hampshire Co., MA census that had male's in his household of the age of Eliphalet. For our anniversary my wife acquired some Stowell pictures through Ebay and gave them to me. Instant relatives! However, truth be told, none are my direct line - but perhaps they are one of yours? I have no dates on these other than I'm sure they are 1900ish or so. Notations on these are: 1. Alfred D. Stowell - Leon's son (a cute boy who appears to be about 6) 2. Mildred Stowell - a color picture (which I think would be rather rare) of a girl perhaps 2 3. G. Allen Stowell - bearded man - probably in his 60s 4. Willard A. Stowell - an A. B. Beer cabinet portrait - Trenton, NJ - a young man perhaps in his 20s 5. Nathan C. Stowell - also on the back Eva V. Stowell - a Lovejoy portrait - 500 South Second Street, Philadelphia - a bearded man in his 60s or older. 6. L. Estelle Stowell - photographer Thos. Baker, Birches Opera House Building, Burlington, NJ - also on back - 4-11-87 Leon Stowell. 7. Leon T. K. Stowell - photo 62389 - David Scannell - Arch Street, Philadelphia - man with mustache perhaps about 40. 8. Charles Harry Stowell - appears to be in his 40s or 50s. Anyway, if any of these are your line, let me know and I'll shoot you a scan of the photos. Tim Stowell Chattanooga

Below shows Samuel and his sons David and Warren all on the same page. IF Eliphalet was born in 1775 he would have been 15 years of age. 1790 Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA: Samuel Stowell 1 male 16 2 females David Stowell 1 male 16 1 male under 16 1 female Warren Stowell 1 male over 16 2 males under 16 1 female In following Eliphalet in the census records the birth year of 1775 (Stowell Genealogy) may be incorrect. 1820 he was born between 1775-1794 1830 he was born between 1780-1790 1840 he was born between 1780-1790 1850 age 64, born 1786 Eliphalet could have been born between 1780 and 1790, with a 1786 birth fitting. IF Eliphalet was born about 1786, his mother, Hannah (Lambert) Stowell would have been 50 years of age - not impossible but unlikely. Is it possible that Eliphalet is actually the son of Samuel & Hannah's oldest son, Warren (born abt 1758)? In the 1790 census they had a male living with them of that age bracket. Also Eliphalet named a son Darius Warren Stowell. Open to any additional information or thoughts. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
