    3. Get ready, get set, and we go to get our son! http://home.highertech.net/~tstowell/yu-hsuan.htm In less than 16 hours we depart on our trip to Taiwan. He is now 8 years old, having had his birthday on January 4th. His given name at birth is Yu-Hsuan (U-Swan). We'll be adding Samuel to this name. I'll go to work Thursday morning and our daughter will be at school to give my wife time to do last minute packing. Our daughter, 10, will be going with us. She is excited to get a brother and keeps telling folks we are going to China. No dear, not China, Taiwan. We leave Atlanta later Thursday afternoon. We arrive in Taiwan Saturday evening, Chattanooga time, after a multi hour layover in Seattle. In Taipei, we'll take the bullet train south to Tainan where the orphanage is. Our son lives in a foster home some distance from the orphanage in the foothills of the central mountain range. After Gotcha Day, we'll take the bullet train north to Taipei to do the American side of the process which extends over two days and a weekend. 1. [STOWELL] Church Restoration Update
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: cothelstone Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stowell/817/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Parish Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, Cothelstone, Taunton, Somerset TA4 3EB United Kingdom RESTORATION UPDATE This 13th century church which still has a service every Sunday at 11am (we still use the 1662 Book of Common Prayer), has a loyal congregation drawn from the surrounding countryside. The Parish, much of which still belongs to the Cothelstone Estate has fewer than 100 residents, but the traditional service and lovely setting attract regular worshippers from further afield as well as the occasional visitor. The church has been well looked after in the past by the two families who have owned the estate over the last 800 years. The Stawells who built the church are still represented by their monuments, tablets and a wealth of history, and one of the eighth generation of the Esdailes still owns and runs the estate. However, the last five years have seen some necessary repair work to this little church. In 2002 the tower and porch were repointed. In 2006 the roof tiles were removed, new felt put underneath, the original tiles put back and the guttering repaired to keep out the west country weather. In 2008 the church was rewired, the lighting added to and the under-pew heating replaced with a modern equivalent (not as good as the original on which you could fry eggs or the backs of your legs). All the above was paid for with money raised within the parish, two small grants from sympathetic charitable trusts, a small contribution from the Bath and Wells Diocese and an overseas donation from the Esdailes. This has amounted to nearly £45,000 and we are rather proud of ourselves for managing to do this. However, whilst parts of the church dry out (from leaks which led to the roof work) and before we repaint the inside (£10,00 has been raised in addition to do this), there is a little more we would like to do to set the church up for the next 50 to 100 years. The vestry which is at the bottom of the tower (it is a small church) is also used as the ringing chamber for the church bells. This is cold, damp and cramped and houses vestments, altar cloths, etc, cleaning equipment and everything to do with church flowers. We would like build proper cupboards for storage, put in a tap, sink and water heater and return the ringing chamber to above the base of the tower. There is also an old boiler house attached to the church which would make a good outside lavatory (some of our older congregation, the priest, cleaners and flower arrangers struggle without one). We are trying to make these changes as sensitive as possible. The essential appeal of the church is it's traditional appearance, setting and liturgy, and we do not want to alter this. For example, the curtains which separate the vestry from the nave (old but rather nice velvet were recently refurbished by one of the congregation, and are staying, though we may replace the tracking). The Diocese and English Heritage (who look after Listed Buildings) have been consulted over the carefully drawn-up plans by an approved church architect (the church is surveyed anyway every 5 years, a requirement of the Diocese as it is a Grade 1 Listed Building). We are delighted that the work has now been approved and having raised so much money locally, we are asking for contributions from those with an interest or attachment to St Thomas' at Cothelstone from further away. If you feel you may be able to help, please get in touch with the Secretary (and one of two Church Wardens) : Mrs Jane Warmington Address : The Coach House, Cothelstone, TAUNTON, Somerset, TA4 3EB, UK Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. I am so sorry that this happened to this family. Part of the problem is that people are not having their children vaccinated at the appropriate times, and so, unfortunately, TB, and other diseases are on the rise. I hope this situation gets resolved soon. Liz Stowell Parmalee -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Timothy Stowell Sent: Sunday, August 09, 2009 9:17 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [STOWELL] to help a child As many or most of you know my wife and I adopted a girl from China in March, 2008. She became a citizen of the United States the moment her feet touched American soil in the airport in Chicago and her passport was stamped with the appropriate stamp. She also gained the rights due any other American citizen including the right to inherit property just as any natural born children would gain by right of birth. Thus adoption of children has become my passion. This week I was made aware of a situation, that we too could have faced, but fortunately did not, nevertheless I wish to assist this family in any way possible. An American couple adopted a little 4 year old from China on the 28th of July. At that point they became her legal parents. After that one has to go to the local approved health agency for a medical exam to make sure they can come to the United States. When they went, the little girl tested positive for TB. However, she has been taking treatment, has responded to it quite well and previous tests showed it negative. Under new rules put in place by the CDC on July 1st, all children 2-14, wishing to come to the United States, have to be tested for TB. The problem with this is, if the child tests positive, they have to stay in the country they were adopted in, for some unknown time until the CDC approves their immigration. So on Friday, this couple had to leave their new daughter behind in China, while they came home. She will not be able to enter the US for a period which could be from 2 to 6 months. If you wish to see public enemy number 1 - http://jayscruggs.livejournal.com/2009/08/06/ You can then scroll down to read more or click on the calendar in the right side to see backward in their story or on the 8th for the latest action plan to bring their daughter home. The favor I ask is that you read / sign this petition and pass along either the link to the petition to or this entire note. http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/build-families-not-barriers.html Sincerely, Tim Stowell ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Thank you for sharing. Maybe this runs in the family? This is one of Eliphalet's grandsons (son Darius Warren Stowell), either Alvin Warren or Avery Willard Stowell: Hubbard Co., MN Enterprise - 7 Dec,. 1888 Deputy Sheriff Robertson feels very sore. The cause of his soreness is the fact that a prisoner escaped from him on Tuesday night. About two weeks ago a man named A.W. Stowell, who lives on Shell Prairie, was arrested, charged with mortgaging property that did not belong to him. He was taken to Fergus Falls for safe keeping. On Tuesday Deputy Sheriff Robertson went over to Fergus Falls to bring the prisoner to this place to appear before the district court. As the train approached the junction Stowell asked leave to go in the water closet. The request was granted. After a short time Robertson thought that Stowell had been in the place long enough. He tried the door and found it locked, but finally it was opened. On going in the closet he found the window open and the bird had flown. Robertson reported the escape to Sheriff Kingsley and all trains were watched but Stowell was not to be found. An effort will be made to capture him.-- Wadena Pioneer. 24 May 1889 - A.W. Stowell, who was arrested last summer for selling mortgaged property and escaped from the Sheriff was re arrested at Motley 2 weeks ago by deputy Sheriff Glass of Wadena. Who took him to a place of safety in Fergus Falls. 21 June 1889 - A.W. Stowell was tried and acquitted at the term court held at Wadena last week. He is in Hubbard Co. once more. Eliphalet's other son, Gershom Rogers Cranston Stowell was also an interesting character... Have you checked any of the LDS microfilmed vital/church/court records for Cummington, Plainfield or Bridgewater, MA? "Speaking of pauperism, at an April 5th [1819] town meeting, the following resolution was passed: 'Voted to instruct the Selectmen to prosecute the man who brought Warren Stowell and his wife into town an[d] the town to which they are supposed to belong on the best information they can obtain.' At an April 3, 1820 town meeting we find the cryptic mention which follows, 'Elected Nehemiah Richards Esq. agent to superintend the suit commenced by Cummington vs. the town of Abingdon.' We can only guess that this suit may have been related to the question of the Town's refusal to support Warren Stowell and wife."
