Notes for Job Stout: >From "Pioneers of Old Hopewell" by Ralph Egge: Job Stout removed to Mays Lick (now Maysville) Kentucky, in 1788-90, and was either accompanied or followed soon after by his father, who was then well advanced in years. The writer has in his possession an account of a trial held at Mays Lick in 1794, in which Jonathan Stout figured prominently as one of the judges, and in whichone of the parties to the case wilfully perjured himself, and died in less than forty-eight hours after its occurrence, from remorse of conscience, which produced a nervous condition closely resembling the terrible disease of hydrophobia. Mr. Stout had refused to administer the oath and had advised him to settle the small matter in dispute, warning him of the consequences of swearing falsely, as he feared he would do. The warning however, was not heeded, a nd he was sworn by Mr. Young, another of the justices present, and seemed stricken with death immediately after giving his testimony. The report of this trial was circulated all over the country at the time, and being well authentica ted made a most profound impression. Job, born February 21, 1763, married Rhoda, daughter of Abner and Mary Howell. They were a Quaker family, living in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, near Trenton, New Jersey. Notes for Rhoda Howell: >From "Pioneers of Old Hopewell" by Ralph Ege: Rhoda Howell was born May 3, 1771, and they were married in 1786, when she was fifteen years of age. Soon after their marriage they removed to Mays Lick, Mason County, Kentucky, where he purchased and improved a fine farm. Mrs. B. B. Clark, wife of the President of the First National Bank of Red Oak, Iowa, and a great grand daughter of Job Stout, informed the writer in 1899, that although Mr. Stout resided in a slave state, he never owned a slave, and was very strongly opposed to the institution. His feelings were so outraged by the almost universal treatment of them by his neighbors, that he sold his fine farm and removed to Franklin County, Indiana, where he again started in the wilderness and cleared another farm, where he died February 28, 1833, aged 70 years Children of Job Stout and Rhoda Howell are: i.
