The following obituary appeared in the September 22, 2001, edition of the Lorain (Ohio) Morning Journal: Los Angeles, Calif. - Dorothy "Dottie" Stout (nee Lalonde) 60, of Los Angeles, California, formerly of South Amherst, died Sunday , August 26, 1001, following a year-long struggle with brain cancer. She was born January 30, 1941, in South Amherst. She graduated from Bowling Green State University, earning her bachelor's degree and master's degrees. She graduated from Claremont Graduate School, earning her doctorate degree. She was on the faculty at Cypress College from 1974 to 2001 and spent two years at the National Science Foundation as program director for undergraduate education. While at Cypress College, she was leader of California and international geology expeditions and was a catalyst for change in earth science education. Recognizing her, the American Geophysics Union presented her the 2001 Excellence in Geophysics Education Award. She was also the recipient of the National Association of Geology Teachers' (NAGT) award, the Orange County Community College Teacher of the Year from the Department of Education and was appointed in 1990 by Gov. Deukmajian, as the first female president of the NAGT. She enjoyed traveling. Survivors include her daughters, Donna J., Deborah D. and Diana L. Steller, all of California; brothers Larry LaLonde and Edward LaLonde, both of South Amherst; sisters Sue Gonos of South Amherst, Cecelia Schake of Sonoma, California., and Yvonne Thomas of Akron; and one grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Stout.
