The following appeared in the February 22, 2001, edition of the County Journal of Percy, Illinois: Bertha A. Murphy Bertha A. Murphy, 80, of Sparta, passed away at 12:43 p.m. Friday, February 16, 2001 at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis. She was a homemaker. She was born December 19, 1920 in Pinckneyville to John and Bertha Sterling Stout. She married Charles W. Murphy May 18, 1946 in Herrin. He preceded her in death May 26, 1987 She was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and five sisters. She is survived by one daughter, Judith and Rae Byrne of Chesterfield, Missouri; one son, Mike Murphy of Gulfport, Mississippi; one stepson, Jim Murphy of Auburn, California; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Memorial services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, 2001 at McDaniel Funeral Home in Sparta Memorials may be made to donor's choice.
