Hi All, Since I last asked about this couple, I've gotten quite a bit of information, which is presented below. There is a problem however. I believe that Thomas must have been married to someone besides Jannetje VAN STEE first. It appears to me that Jannetje VAN STEE is probably only the mother of John Vroom STOUT thru Carritje Stout. This conclusion is based on her date of birth and the date of the marriage. Also what I have seen in the IGI records of various children is that the children before John Vroom STOUT are listed with the parents Thomas STOUT and Jannetje, whereas John Vroom STOUT and after have the parents listed as Thomas STOUT and Jannetje Vroom VAN STEE. There also seems to be a change in the naming pattern. So the question of the day is...... Does anyone have any evidence that my speculation is correct or incorrect, or any other data that might reflect on this family. Descendants of Thomas Stout Generation No. 1 1. THOMAS5 STOUT (JAMES4, JAMES3, RICHARD2, JOHN1) was born 30 Oct 1734 in Hunterdon Co., NJ, and died 30 Apr 1827 in ,, NJ. I found an item mentioning Daniel & Elizabeth in a Harrison County, WV History (1995) (available from the Harrison Co. Gen. Soc.). I have a question about Daniel and Elizabeth. According to my info, Daniel died about before 1811 in Harrison county. Did his wife move to Kentucky with the children? The item from the Harrison co. book is headlined as being about a witch craft examination by members of the Simpson Creek Baptist Church of Rhoda Ward in January 1787. Members of the congregation apparently found Rhoda innocent; no punishment was imposed. She was examined again in 1799 and again no punishment was imposed. The following declarations were made in Jan. 1787: Rhoda Ward - "This may certify to all it may concern that the following I deliver as truth as I expect to answer it at the Great Day of Judgment. On a time when I lay sick of the chicken-pox, it appeared to me that Sarah Roy, or something like her, came to me with a small lot of pins. She told me that if I told of her, she would kill me; if not, she would neer trouble me any more. The same day, or perhaps the next, I know not which, Elizabeth Stout showed me some crooked pins, which she said, I spewed up. If I did, I knowed it not, though it might be the case, and if the pins had not been showed to me, and I have been told that I spewed them up, I should have thought that the above had been a fiction, proceeding from being light-headed with fever. But this I know that my throat and breast were sore, and I spit blood the next day, but I know not the cause of it, and I remember that my sister, Sarah, and Brother John, came to Daniel Stout's in the time of sugar making, and Elizabeth Stout asked her if she got home that time before her father, and she said, 'Yes.' These things I deliver as truth, as witness my hand the date above mentioned." Mary Smith - "This is to certify to or inform all whom it may concern that as I have been inquired of respecting what I know concerning Rhoda Ward vomiting pins. the following I offer as the whole of my knowledge in the matter, which I am willing to be qualified to. As I was at Daniel Stout's at a time when Rhoda Ward lay sick of the chicken-pox, I saw her spew up one or two pins that was crooked, and there were others laying ont he floor. I expected she spewed them up before I noticed her, and about an hour after, she said she knew who gave them to her. This is to certify to the best of my knowledge is all I know." Seems like a lot of people coming & going from Daniel & Elizabeth's place. I'm actually showing 13 children for Job and Rhoda There's a Margaret missing from 1799, a Rebecca between Joab and David, and following David I have: Sarah, Ira, Aaron and Anna. Most of this taken from "Pioneers of Old Hopewell", a book from 1908 by Ralph Ege Seems large, but not totally unusual for this branch of Stouts. Bill Stout Gilbert, AZ Ancestors of Abner Stout Generation No. 1 1. Abner Stout, born 23 Aug 1797 in Maysville, Mason Co., KY. He was the son of 2. Job Stout and 3. Rhoda Howell. He married (1) Malinda Tyner. She was born 21 Mar 1802 in Georgetown, Scott Co., KY, and died 17 Oct 1879 in Decatur Co., IN. Generation No. 2 2. Job Stout, born 21 Feb 1763 in Hopewell, Hunterdon Co., NJ; died 28 Feb 1833 in Franklin Co., Indiana. He was the son of 4. Jonathon Stout and 5. Rachel Burroughs. He married 3. Rhoda Howell 1786. 3. Rhoda Howell, born 3 May 1771; died 12 Apr 1844. She was the daughter of 6. Abner Howel and 7. Mary. Notes for Job Stout: >From "Pioneers of Old Hopewell" by Ralph Egge: Job Stout removed to Mays Lick (now Maysville) Kentucky, in 1788-90, and was either accompanied or followed soon after by his father, who was then well advanced in years. The writer has in his possession an account of a trial held at Mays Lick in 1794, in which Jonathan Stout figured prominently as one of the judges, and in whichone of the parties to the case wilfully perjured himself, and died in less than forty-eight hours after its occurrence, from remorse of conscience, which produced a nervous condition closely resembling the terrible disease of hydrophobia. Mr. Stout had refused to administer the oath and had advised him to settle the small matter in dispute, warning him of the consequences of swearing falsely, as he feared he would do. The warning however, was not heeded, a nd he was sworn by Mr. Young, another of the justices present, and seemed stricken with death immediately after giving his testimony. The report of this trial was circulated all over the country at the time, and being well authentica ted made a most profound impression. Job, born February 21, 1763, married Rhoda, daughter of Abner and Mary Howell. They were a Quaker family, living in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, near Trenton, New Jersey. Notes for Rhoda Howell: >From "Pioneers of Old Hopewell" by Ralph Ege: Rhoda Howell was born May 3, 1771, and they were married in 1786, when she was fifteen years of age. Soon after their marriage they removed to Mays Lick, Mason County, Kentucky, where he purchased and improved a fine farm. Mrs. B. B. Clark, wife of the President of the First National Bank of Red Oak, Iowa, and a great grand daughter of Job Stout, informed the writer in 1899, that although Mr. Stout resided in a slave state, he never owned a slave, and was very strongly opposed to the institution. His feelings were so outraged by the almost universal treatment of them by his neighbors, that he sold his fine farm and removed to Franklin County, Indiana, where he again started in the wilderness and cleared another farm, where he died February 28, 1833, aged 70 years Children of Job Stout and Rhoda Howell are: i. Jonathan Stout, born 10 Jul 1788 in Maysville, Mason Co., KY; died 1849; married Nancy Thompson 22 Dec 1808 in Mayslick, Mason Co., KY; born 1791; died 1856. ii. She married William Waldorf, and resided at Whitcomb, Franklin County, Ohio. She had in her possession a gold spoon which she prized very highly as a relic of her ancestors. Jonathan and Job Stout, father and son, were both soldiers of the revolution, and Jonathan either removed to Kentucky with his sons David and Job, or followed soon after. Generation No. 3 4.
