Thanks for all who enjoyed the posting and sent words of thanks. Barbara [email protected]
Thanks for the source. It is very kind of you to share it with us. I enjoyed reading it. Hope no one else gives you a hard time about it. It is a blessing when someone shares a source about our ancestors & it should be treated as the gift it was. Being critical was probably ment to be a warning but it can be phrased in a way in which to show appreciation for the work and the contributor. All stories published are just that & sould be treated as such. They are ment to enhance the understanding of our ancestors lives. I doubt that any story sould be read as a first proof. That is removing it from it's purpose to entertain. This was a very entertaining story, and I deeply appreciate you sharing it. God Bless You, Rev. Candy Smothers [email protected]

I'm sorry you found so much wrong with the story of Penelope. The name of her first husband was 1st name, Kent last name, van Princes. There is also a record of the marriage of Richard & Penelope in "American Marriage Records before 1699" by William Montgomery Clemens PG 205. Richard Stout & Penelope marriage date & Location. There have been many references to Penelope's name being Thomson. Her education was received in Amsterdam, Holland not New Amsterdam the New Would. The story of Penelope had very little in the way of conversation. From the time of her wounding by the Indians the information came from a Journal kept by Penelope, after her escape from the Indians, and later continued by her family. I hope this clears up some of your questions. Barbara [email protected]
I just finished reading the book Four Women In A Violent Time by Deborah Crawford. I found that she cleared up some date problems I had with Richard & Penelope. I'm enclosing my notes from the book in the hope it might help others. I hope this not too confusing because the notes are just the way I found them in the book and put them in my computer. I just realized I jumped around a lot while entering the information. Descendants of Penelope Thomson (Thompson) Generation No. 1 1. PENELOPE THOMSON1 (THOMPSON) (Source: (1) Deborah Crawford, Four Women in a Violent Time, (Crown Publishers, New York 1970), Pg 44, 45, 46, 47, Penelope Thomson or Thompson in 1634 was 12 yrs old and living in Amsterdam, Holland. she went to church with her parents at the New Church - Presbyterian. The City enjoyed an intellectual life perhaps second to none in Europe. Rembrandt was the rage at this time. Penelope had a tutor who taught her French, English, some mathematics & ancient history. Penelope's husband Kent suggested they sail to the New World after they married and she agreed. It took 58 days sailing when they went aground and sandy Point and had to abandon ship. (2) Deborah Crawford, Four Women in a Violent Time, (Crown Publishers, New York 1970), Pg 49-62, there is a lengthy story of Penelope's rescue by Indians and her life with them at there camp and the friends she made. The chief saved her from further torture and took her to his camp where he placed her with the squaws for healing and to live until she took a husband. She stayed with them always looking for a way to escape. when she was told it was time for her to take a husband she knew she had to escape. She was also told she didn't have to accept the first brave who asks for her as wife. She had 3 choices than a husband would be picked for her. The Lenapes had a small war with their arch enemies the Mohawks. When the Indians returned to camp they set about torturing their captives. During the frenzy of blood spilling Penelope made her escape., (3) Deborah Crawford, Four Women in a Violent Time, (Crown Publishers, New York 1970).) was born 1622 in AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND (Source: Deborah Crawford, Four Women in a Violent Time, (Crown Publishers, New York 1970), Pg 44 - 64, After spending one night on the beach with her dying husband she woke surrounded by Indians. They scalped her, hacked into her shoulder, and almost disemboweled her. Then they left her for dead. Penelope died 1732 in Middletown MONMOUTH, NJ (Source: Deborah Crawford, Four Women in a Violent Time, [Crown Publishers, New York 1970), Pg 182, Penelope was 110 when she died in 1732. And was buried beside her husband. She married (1) KENT VAN PRINCES 1642 in Amsterdam, Holland. He was born Abt 1622, and died 1642 in Sandy Point, New Netherlands, (Source: Deborah Crawford, Four Women in a Violent Time, (Crown Publishers, New York 1970), Pg 46, 47, 48, they were age 20 when they married and set sail for the New World. Kent was sick during the whole sea voyage. When they crashed into Sandy Point he was unable to travel by foot to the nearest town. He and Penelope were left on the beach until they could back help. When the Indians came they killed him where he lay.). She married (2) RICHARD STOUT Abt May 1644 in GRAVESEND, LONG ISLAND NY (Source: William Montgomery Clemens, American Marriage Records Before 1699, (Genealogical Publishing Co. 1979), Pg 205, Richard Stout & Penelope marriage date & location). son of JOHN STOUT and ELIZABETH BEE. He was born Abt 1610 in NOTTINGHAMSHIRE, ENGLAND BURTON JOYCE PARISH (Source: Deborah Crawford, Four Women in a Violent Time, (Crown Publishers, New York 1970), Pg 81, 82, & 83, He ran away from home at age 30 because his father kept interfering with his love affairs. when he ran away he joined the Navy and served for 7 yrs. and was discharged in New Amsterdam. He served as a guard for the Director General of New Amsterdam William Kieft for 1 yr. He than joined Lady Deborah Moody's group as a guard. This is where he met Penelope.), and died June 9, 1705, in MIDDLETOWN, MONMOUTH CO. NJ (Source: Deborah Crawford, Four Women in a Violent Time, (Crown Publishers, New York 1970), Pg 182, In 1705 at the age of 95 Richard Stout died. His wife in her journal wrote a single line. "I was never unhappy with him."). Notes for PENELOPE THOMSON (THOMPSON): The is a difference in her age when Richard died. The book says she was 73 at the time of Richard's death but she must have been 83. I am wary about relying too much on Four Women In A Violent Time by Deborah Crawford because the book is not really a history or genealogy book but a fictionalized biography, e.g., it recounts conversations that were never recorded, or contains details about Penelope's education that have not otherwise been recorded (most likely the education details are based on what was a typical education for a girl of Penelope's background living in New Amsterdam at that time). As far as my research indicates, Penelope's surname is uncertain. I have seen her surname listed as Lent, Kent, Prince and Von Princen, with the last two names possible reflecting a first marriage. I don't know where Crawford got the name "Thompson." I believe there are no records or either Penelope's first marriage in the Netherlands or her second marriage to Richard Stout so Crawford's marriage dates are probably guesses. The 1642 marriage date to Richard Crawford may derive from the birthdates of their children or from a supposition that they were married when Gravesend was founded in 1643. The book of marriages that you cited, I don't believe was based on any recorded marriage lists. Note a 1642 marriage date conflicts with a 1648 Gravesend record referring to a "Penelope Prince" who is thought to be Richard Stout's wife, Penelope. Richard's will was dated June 9, 1703 and was proved on October 23, 1705 at Perth Amboy, New Jersey. (Richard Stouts will recorded in Liber. 1, p. 120, of Wills at Trenton, N.J.) All I can say about his death date is that he died between those two dates. The first published story of Penelope and the Indians was printed in Samuel Smith's History of New Jersey, published at Burglington, NJ in 1765. A second version of the story was published in Morgan Edwards' Materials Towards A History of The Baptists in New Jersey, published in 1792. Both versions were reprinted in Historical and Genealogical Miscellany, Early Settlers of New Jersey and their Descendants by John E. Stillwell, Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore (1970), Vol. IV, 296-297. Stillwell seems a good source for early information on the Stout family. These volumes by him also contain the first town books of Middletown, NJ Patt _______________________________________________________ Say Bye to Slow Internet! http://www.home.com/xinbox/signup.html

I've read in a couple of places that Penelope Kent/Lent Van Princen STOUT had some kind of encounter with a cow in 1648. Does anyone know what occurred? Thanks, Sharron Spencer in TX

Perhaps this is your Charity Stout. I have a Peter Stout, b 6-16-1769 in Orange Co. NC, who married a Charity Barns (Barnes) about 1798. I have Charity Barns Stout's birthdate as 9-6-1774, in Chatham Co. NC. I don't see that they have had a child named Samuel but it is always possible that the Quaker records I took their family from didn't list all of them (especially if they left the area). Samuel is a common name among my Stouts, it also possible that the Samuel you find is a cousin, if not a son. This Peter Stout (Charity's husband) is a grandson of Peter "the Quaker" Stout & Margaret Cypert. Some of them did go to TN. Thanks, Alice, these folks are my step-dad's ancestors...I've been looking for them in the 1850 census but have not been able to find them in either MO or VA. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has any information on the parents of Albert (possibly Elbert) and Nancy Stout.
