    3. Hello Stouts, Is anyone on this list near Albany? That is where the Charles Gehring project is centered. It is also called the New Netherlands Project (NNP). Maybe, by a long shot, they have in the Registries somewhere a line on Penelope being a passenger on the Kath. I think you have to go to get assistance. I can no longer find an e-mail for them. I have this offer from my sister-in-law: "This idea may lead to nothing, but I will share it with you. A friend here is a descendant of the Maduro family (yes, THE Maduro-dam family). After the death of an aunt, who lived in Holland, he now manages a significant estate, the two biggest parts of which are a)the largest bank in Curacao and b)an old, international shipping company. A grandfather was in the House of Lords or something. He goes to Curacao regularly to do his shipping/banking/estate thing. He also jetsets to London and elsewhere with frequency. He speaks Dutch and Papiamento. If he can find anything out about the Kath I will let you know." It is possible that since the Kath sailed with another ship which we know went via Curacao that they have records there. I am going to try to get to Zeist this week or next and I am definitely scheduled to go to Amsterdam again on Thursday. Regards, Linda --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 2. Hoping maybe someone on the list can help me out here. I'm trying to figure out if the below STOUT folks belong in my line or not. James S. STOUT was born ca. 1795, Grayson Co., VA (per his 2nd marriage record). He married first to Phoebe SHORT on 8 Nov 1826 in Washington Co., VA, d/o of _?_ and _?_. Phoebe died. He married 2nd to Julia Ann K. SIMMS on 4 Dec 1872 in Washington Co., VA, d/o of George SIMS and _?_. (Would appreciate names of each of his spouse's parents if anyone knows.) Now. James, on his 2nd marriage record, indicated that the names of his parents were Peter STOUT, born in PA, and Rachel _?_, also born in PA. Apparently, since their son James indicated he was born in Grayson Co., VA, they had to have resided there at some point in time. I've not been able to find any record of them. Can anyone help? If possible, I'd also like to know parents of Peter -- it would help me place him (hopefully) either in or out of my STOUT line. Thanks in advance, Neva STOUT BRYANT

    3. Hello Stouts, I traveled today to Amsterdam and went to the Scheepsvaart (maritime or Ship Navigation, esp. Atlantic) Museum. It is a splendid old granite building on the water a fifteen minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station. I was looking for Penelope's name on a passenger list. I had to find the ship upon which she sailed. The library cost nothing to use. I could not take my purse in, but I got the guilder back from locker storage afterwards. There were two librarians and one serious scholar there. The serious scholar was tapping away into his laptop from books without looking at his keyboard, pouring information in from the books from the shelf. I could tell he was American from his clothes and the copy of the New Yorker under his stack of books. The librarians were helpful but not hopeful. The young woman took me to the books that listed the sailings. It was all in Dutch. The older man straightened me out about how the information was presented. They left me with a dictionary. My eager eyes started to scan for the ships sailing around 1640. Not too many and I knew Penelope's ship did not return so I only copied those. I wrote the name of the ship, the owner, the skipper, the date of sailing and the date of landing. I was only interested in the ones going to Nieuw Amsterdam. I was excited by the Aker, but then I found that it had sailed again. Not Penelope, since hers shipwrecked. It wasn't long until I found this: 107.1 Kath Hans Jelisz. Did not return This has to be Penelope's ship. I scanned the doctoral thesis (in Dutch) of a J.A. Jacobs from Leiden University on the ships sailing to the new world from Holland between 1609-1675. The average was 3.75 ships per year, about five ships per year in the period 1639-1648. It is very unlikely that a ship other than the Kath was beached at Sandy Hook. The librarians shared my excitement and the young woman called her colleague at the KB in the Hague to see if a passenger list was available. The colleague in the Hague was very skeptical and said that almost all of the West Indie Company archives are lost. Nonetheless, there was a small possibility. The older man explained that the verb kaapvaren meant to privateer. This ship had entered into an agreement with the king to allow it to attack a Spanish ship and bring it back to port (sold and money made by all, especially the king). This is opposed to pirating which has no authorization. In 1648 the Peace of Westphalia happened and Holland was no longer at war with Spain. So our Penelope had some possible excitement on her ship. And it was later than we thought. Penelope's ship sailed with 106.1 Swol, owned by Jan Claesen Bol, also the West Indies Company. Amsterdam 1647. Nieuw Amsterdam voor 27-5-1647 (the Europeans do date, month, year) and this was noted about that ship voer samen met de "Kath" (no 107) vanaf Curacao. Werd aan de vice-governor van New Haven verkocht. (This boat went by way of Curacao and then was sold to the vice-governor of New Haven) The young woman librarian told me that she thought Kath might also be Kat, or Cat, in English. She thought that the Charles Gehring project might respond to us now that we had the name of the ship. Maybe I should ask Jeremy Bangs to contact him, scholar to scholar. I will contact Jeremy this weekend. Before I left, I felt emboldened to make a query of the scholar in the library. I did not want to let a golden possibility pass me by. "Excuse me, sir. I am sorry to intrude. Are you perchance with the Charles Gehring project?" "Who is Charles Goring?" I wondered if he was making fun of my woeful Dutch pronunciation. He did not come forward with any more information, in spite of my hopeful and expectant face looking at him. Oh well. I was very happy. This was a very good beginning. The 84 guilder ticket on my car for overstaying my paid parking when I returned to Leiden on the train from Amsterdam only bothered me for a moment. I have stretched my luck in that parking lot many times and I should have been more heads up when I drove in and noticed so many fewer cars, that they had become stricter. It was a slight slap to my triumphant psyche. But, I do not need money. That was a sweet offer. I appreciate the support from all of you. I felt it. 3. I found it very hard to get much information from the Ancestry.com Quaker records--they just don't give you the whole picture (at least, I haven't figured out how to do it if there is a way). This Anna Littler, according to Hinshaw's Vol 1, Holly Spring MM Records (NC), was a daughter of Jeremiah Littler & Catharine Stuart. Jeremiah Littler was a son of Mincher & Deborah Littler. The listing includes a whole bunch of brothers & sisters for her--holler if you want the data on them. A few pages away is a listing for Joseph Stout (son of Joseph & Naomy), b either 3 or 8m-3-1822; and his wife Anna (Littler) Stout, b 8-13-1824; and a child, Ketita Clerkston, b 6-18-1840. In the Minutes section, on 10m-22-1846, Anna (Littler), dt. Jeremiah & Catharine, Randolph Co., married Joseph Stout, at Holly Spring MH. The only other listings I see in the Holly Spring MM Minutes for Joseph & Anna Stout are : 8m-17-1850 Joseph recommended an Elder 6m-18-1859 Anna named assistant clerk 5m-18-1867 Joseph "chosen overseer" for Bethel Mtg. 4m-17-1869 Anna "chosen overseer" Hope this helps. More information available on request. Alice Allen ----- Original Message ----- <snip> > I would like to get more information about this Anna LITTLER who married a > STOUT (maybe Joseph?). 3. Hi all, I am new to this list. I found this on Ancestry.com: Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. 1 database: Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy [p.459] BIRTH AND DEATH RECORDS page 471 Anna (Littler) Stout b. 8-13-1824. Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy [p.459] BIRTH AND DEATH RECORDS page 471 Joseph Stout, s. Joseph & Amey, d. 12- 4-1849 Does anyone have any information on this Anna Littler, born in 1824, that married a Stout (perhaps Joseph)? She would be about the right age to have been my great great grandfather's, Robert M. Littler, sister Anna Littler who was mentioned in a Deposition from Robert's Civil War Pension file. My Anna was born in Frederick County, Virginia. If my information is correct (still waiting for incoming copies of official records) her parents were married in 1822 in Baltimore. Robert was born about 1828/29 in Frederick County. Littler family in Frederick County had been affiliated with the Hopewell Monthly Meeting (Quaker). Any help on find out about this Littler who married a Stout would be much appreciated. Thank you. Lynn Dever [email protected] Littler Surname Page: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~littler
