    1. Re: [STONE-L] George W. Stone - VA>AL
    2. Hi Kelly! Wish I could help you on this one. I too am looking for the link up on a George W. (William) STONE. Mine fought in the Civil War on the Union side and at least settled in Arkansas after the war was over. I have no idea where he was living before the war. When I was looking at the census index there were over 50 George Stone's as heads of household listed in the census before the war and the same number in the census after the war (with a few George Stone's listed as killed during the war). There sure were lot of them! What little info I have on him comes from the 1870 census and an Aunt. He was born about 1838 in Indiana (census info), and that his father's name was also George William Stone, a name that was used a lot in the family as well as John L. and Josephine (names of 2 of his children). The way the story goes is that shortly after he died (around 1875 with the children still real young) his wife died and his father-in-law got the children and took them home to raise. Among his daughters possessions was an extensive history on George William STONE's family but because George had fought on the Union side, his father-in-law (a slave owner) hated him and burned everything! I have a feeling that when I finally find his siblings and parents, he will link to one of the many Stone family trees that I've seen. With the George W. Stone name having been so popular in his family line, he will quite possibly link to your Stone line. There is a lot of documentation on STONE families in Virginia and I'm sure you'll be able to link your George W. Stone. Best of luck!
