Attended the Governor’s Reception. The officers who attended Governor Stone’s annual reception at Jefferson City Thursday evening returned this morning on the Missouri Pacific. There were about seventy-five officers from various parts of the state present and the Carthage delegation report a most enjoyable visit. The officers had a meeting while in Jefferson City with the object of organizing for pushing a bill through the state legislature for the more favorable recognition of the state militia, but no definite action was taken. The Carthage officers who attended were: Col. W. K. Caffee, Captains A. B. Deutsch, Joe McMillian, John McMillan, and J. W. Halliburton." For more info on our Gov. STONE from California, see: http://www.gsd.harvard.edu/brc/report/08_landuse.html "Records of the 1880s for the then State of California indicate that wildfires burned uncontrolled for weeks at a time. Lack of protection from fire caused serious damage to irrigation works and water supplies of San Diego and other growing coastal communities. The first State of California Forestry Commission, established in 1886 by Governor Stone, reflected the growing public concern for the land. A report by the commission demonstrated the need for watershed protection by stating that major fires and erosion were injuring the climate, agriculture, and future prospects of Southern California." The following is confusing. Were Wm. Stone and Thomas Stone and John H. Stone ALL governors of MD? http://www.mdinns.com/inns/charles.htm "The Thomas Stone Historic Site You will find the mansion of Governor Thomas Stone three miles from La Plaata on the west side of Rose Hill Road. Thomas Stone was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, who had his city home in the Peggy Stewart House in Annapolis but was born in Charles County. His younger brother, John Hoskins Stone, became Governor of Maryland and returned to his native county. Thomas Stone served as State Senator and as a delegat to congress under the Articles of Confederation. He declined to be a delegate to the Continental Congress because of failing health and died in 1787. His home is now called the Thomas Stone Historic Site and is operated by the National Park Service. Its five parts are arranged in an arch. The central section is brick with a gambrel roof and to the east, is a small frame, one and a half storey gambrel roof structure. The site is open to the public. When Col. Jones fell out with Mr. Francis, the editor made an alliance with Mr. Joel Stone, who succeeded Mr. Francis as governor of Missouri." This Gov. STONE appears to be in Ohio. http://www.history.ohio-state.edu/projects/coal/1902AnthraciteStrike/PublicOpinion/situation.htm "Scanned from Public Opinion, October 16, 1902. THE president's second move toward a settlement of the anthracite coal strike was taken on Monday, the 6th. Through Commissioner of Labor Wright, Mr. Roosevelt offered, if the miners would return to work, to appoint a commission to investigate the matters at issue between them and their employers and to do all in his power to obtain a settlement of those matters in accordance with the report of the commission. Mr. Mitchell's reply to this proposal was made public on Thursday. He declined to advise the miners to return to work "simply upon the hope that the coal operators might be induced or forced to comply with the recommendations of your (the president's) commission." Mr. Mitchell's position was supported by votes of the numerous local unions. Governor Stone on the 6th ordered out the entire national guard of the state, about 9,000 men, for duty in the coal fields. This action is commended on all sides, partly because it is believed that it will end the lawlessness that has reigned there, but mainly because it will put to the test the claim of the operators that they could mine coal if given proper protection for themselves and for miners willing to return to work if they and their homes were secure from molestation."
