Hello, Fellow Researchers! Again today, the genealogy lists worldwide are buzzing with Canada's decision not to ever release the national Census from 1911, or any further ones. Can you imagine what your database and website would look like once you removed any info you got from a census? While this is just one country, is it the start of a trend? Will liability concerns make this a precedent? And will our descendants be denied the joy of 'Aha! I found it!', that cry we all love so dearly? <g> Since we all know only too well how families migrate from country to country over the years, who's to say how many genealogy buffs this will one day deter? Many of the letters are pointing out the nice, polite form letters we all got, rejecting our bid for sanity on this issue (after all, just how do you violate the privacy of someone who has been dead for 50 years?), and asking for suggestions on the next step to take. We would like to offer one simple suggestion: If we're dissatisfied with the service at a local store, we speak to the owner. If a local franchise causes us grief or turns a deaf ear, we write the head office. In this vein, we humbly offer http://pm.gc.ca/mail_room/contact_pm/index.html-ssi, the direct response page on the P.M.'s web site.(NOTES: that's 'mail_room' and 'contact_pm'; it uses the underscore, not a hyphen. Also - no www) We firmly believe this is the logical next step in our battle to protect our hobby, our rights, and our HERITAGE!!! If those sending us the replies truly don't have the power to change things, as they so nicely point out, then we should be talking to one who can. And no one has more power over this decision than Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien! Please, take but a few minutes today to help preserve our kind, and to help wage a battle against one more small step in the loss of our freedoms. Thank you. Doug & Teri Champigny, Toronto, Ontario.
