According to "Stones of Surry," Corder Stone (Hillra's ancestor) and Enoch Stone, Sr. (My Ancestor) were sons of John Stone and his wife, who is thought to have been a Corder. John Stone is said to have been born in Fauquier County, Virginia, say about 1725. "Stones of Surry" argues that this John was a descendant of Governor William Stone of Maryland. He may have been, but I've worked the problem from both ends, and haven't yet found any solid proof for such a descent. I'm hoping that you, Hillra, or other Stone researchers can tell me: (1) if John of Fauquier County, Virginia, was indeed the father of Corder and Enoch, Sr.; (2) if their mother (John's wife) was a Corder; (3) who were her parents; and (4) who were John's parents. The Corder connection is also problematic. Corder Stone's older brother, Thomas, married Sarah Corder (Who were her parents?), and Enoch Stone, Sr., named his fifth son Thomas Corder. Among Enoch's children, apparently only this Thomas had a middle name, and it is perhaps this peculiar fact that has led us to the conclusion that Enoch's mother (and Corder's as well) was herself a Corder. However, for what it's worth, Enoch's wife, Nancy Anthony, had a sister Jane, who married a Joel Corder, and a brother James, who married an Elizabeth Corder. I assume that James and Elizabeth were brother and sister, but were they also related to Thomas Stone's wife, Sarah Corder, and to his and Enoch's mother, who is also said to have been a Corder? Talk about consanguinity! If you're confused about all this, just think about how confused I am. I'm hoping somebody can help me solve these puzzles. Richard Bingham
