    3. I have been trying to figure this one out for awhile. I say Gov. Stone married Verlinda Graves. Verlinda is the sister to my ancestor, John Graves. Someone told me that my ancestor, Francis Doughty, married Bridgett Stone (whom I decsend from), and I found her name on a web page as being sister to Gov. Stone. So far, no one has been able to confirm this. He married 2nd, Ann Graves. I show Gov. Stone had a 2nd wife, Elizabeth Spriggs or Hawkes. I was first told that their children were Thomas, Richard, and Elizabeth. I have also been told that all 7 children of Gov. Stone are from Verlinda Graves (Cotton). Messed up! Thanks for the info. I am going to save it! Anjanette Stone Lofgren -----Original Message----- From: ceagle52 [SMTP:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, June 02, 1998 12:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [STONE-L] New Stone Page (MUST SEE) Would anyone care to comment on the following opinion that Verlinda Stone was Verlinda GRAVES not Verlinda COTTON? GENEALOGIES OF VIRGINIA FAMILIES, Vol. 2, p. 774: Mrs. P. W. Hiden refers to MD. Hist. Mag., Vol. 16, p. 191, which asserted that Capt. Stone's wife was William Cotton's sister. Further research shows this is an error and that Virlinda Stone was the sister of Ann Graves, in proof of which the following facts are presented: 1) Capt. William Stone was called "brother-in-law" in William Cotton's will and Capt. Stone in his will refers to a "brother-in-law", Francis Doughty; showing that the relationship in both cases was through Ann and not her husbands. Why Capt. Stone distinguishes Thomas Sprigg as "brother" and Francis Doughty as "brother-in-law" the writer cannot explain, unless the Sprigg marriage was of longer standing and Thomas Sprigg a more congenial person. 2) Capt William Roper, Capt. Stone and Mr. Cotton were administrators of estate of Capt. Thomas Graves (Northampton 2, p. 281) appointed probably because his sons, John and Thomas Graves were not residents of the county and his son, Francis, a minor. 3) Verlinda Cotton, only child of Rev. William Cotton and Ann Graves, married first Thomas Burdett living then in Charles Co. MD. Thomas Burdett brought suit against Mr. Francis Bathelor (Archives of MD. Vol. 52, p. 280) When the case came up in court 5 NOV 1662, the pltff. charged that Mr. Richard Rich received of Mrs. Ann Doughty, seven silver spoons and engaged to deliver six silver spoons marked E.B. at his next return out of England and after his arrival in this province did acknowledge he brough six silver spoons for the aforesd. Doughty but never delivered them. Mrs. Ann Doughty, aged 42 or thereabouts, said the spoons she sent home by Mr. Rich for her son Burdett's use which were seven in number and 4s in silver and desired at his return he would return to the deposnent six new ones for them and to have them marked E.B. for her first grandchild (Elizabeth Burdett who married first John Hamilton and second Richard Chandler). The "cousin Elizabeth Calvert" whom Ann mentioned was the oldest daughter of Capt./Gov. William Stone and Verlinda Graves, and had recently married William Calvert (Ancestral Rec. & Portraits, pp. 375-378) and was niece (cousin) to Ann Graves. Gov. William Stone was the nephew of Thomas Stone, haberdasher of Cateaton Street, London (Archives of MD, Vol. 4, pp. 375-378).
