    3. I have been into genealogy searching for about 15 years and find that one person's name can be spelled many ways. I have also found that back in the 1800s and before names were very strange. Some came from Gaelic, and other languages and are spelt differently in English! 3. Re: names I had an Uncle Elba which you would think would be pronounced "L-ba" but everyone in the family has always called him "El-bee". A great uncle was always called Uncle Ed. He was a bachelor who ended up raising his nephew when his parents died. When he married at 66, his wife assumed him name was Edward and got him to make his legal papers as Edward. But, when he died and we got into family records more, we found his name was actually Edwin. My grandfather was William Clayton Wilson and everyone called him Jake and that is the name he used when he signed his name. In some cases I think misspelling or mispronunciation may have come from the simple fact that not everyone could read and write. Even Oprah's parents misspelled her name and she is called by the name the way it was spelled and not the name they meant for her to be called. Genealogy can be a challenge. It is either something like the above or your brick wall is a common name like John Stone. . . . . Cora
