This post is to add more information concerning the STONEs and Von STEINs, I hope there is someone out there that may see something in common. The information I have, given to me by my Mother's cousin in Pennsylvania, indicates my STONES original name was Von or Van STEIN. She says that a Baron Von STEIN went from Holland to England in 1680 and then to America, and settled in Edgewood, RI, now part of Providence, RI. The first STONE I have in my records, Benjamin STONE had ten children, the oldest was Benjamin Gorton STONE. I must make it very plain that a lot of this is just verbal information, that I have not been able to fully confirm, yet, but I have to have something to work with. I'm sure you know how that is. Below is a small part of the descendant list of Benjamin STONE. Ernest Eldridge STONE was my grandfather. I am struggling to fill in details, since so many of my connections are in PA it's hard to trace when I am 1200 miles away in Mississippi. I have no information about any of the other nine children of Benjamin STONE, so they could be almost anywhere. 1 Benjamin STONE: Born Abt. 1780, probably in RI....Died Unknown married....Abt. 1805: Mary "Polly" GORTON: Born Abt. 1780....Died Unknown 2 Benjamin Gorton STONE: Born 14 January 1806, Edgewood Station, RI.....Died 13 December 1880, Buried Port Allegany, PA married.... 13 August 1831: Marilla WHITE: Born 18 January 1810, Tioga Co.,PA....Died 13 December 1892, Port Allegany, PA 3 Daniel B STONE: Born 21 November 1833, Port Allegany, PA 3 Eli STONE: Born 30 November 1835, Port Allegany, PA 3 Sarah E STONE: Born 18 September 1837, Port Allegany, PA 3 Benjamin G STONE: Born 11 Feb 1840, Port Allegany, PA 3 Erivn W STONE: 20 Sept 1845, Port Allegany, PA married....Abt 1870: Annette LILLIBRIDGE: Born 6 October 1849, Port Allegany, PA...Died 9 Mar 1932, Port Allegany, PA 4 Ernest Eldridge STONE: Born 7 June 1874, Port Allegany, PA....Died 27 Mar 1956, Macon, MS 4 Edwin Ruthvin STONE: Born 7 March 1876, Died 28 Feb 1960 4 Marilla STONE: Born 13 Jan 1878, in PA....Died 13 Dec 1946 3 Erwin Albert STONE: Born 20 Sept 1845, Port Allegany, PA....Died 6 Jan 1931, Hornell, Steuben Co., NY 3 Levandia STONE: Born 17 March 1853... Bill, My oldest Stone is a direct line to Henry Stone b. Sep 3 1726 in Amelia Co., Va and Frances Reed b. 1729. Their son William Stone was among the first settlers of East Tennessee then known as the Watauga purchase. In History of Washington Co. Tennessee the follow appears on page 504. During William Stone's residence in Washington Co., he was one of its most prominent citizens and took an active part in church and community affairs. Stone was a Baptist and he and his family are belived to have attended the early Watauga River Church, which is said to have later become Sinking Creek Baptist Church. His civic record was impressive. Besides appearing regularly in the tax lists and in court records as a juror, he was appointed Tax Assessor in 1780 and Captain of the militia in 1790. Moreover, records show that he was a good businessman who bought and sold large tracts of land. Finally after 18 years in Washington Co. in 1796, he and his son Robert removed to newly formed Grainger Co., where they boughtland and William erected a grist mill on Richland Creek near the present-day town of Blain. Both participated actively in local affairs, and made valuable contributions to the organization and developemnt of the new county. Some believe William died in Grainger Co. around 1803 and others that in 1811 he removed to Missouri. William married in Virgina before moving to Tennessee, but his wife's identity has never been determined. The Book "Leaves From the Family Tree" by Penelope Johnson Allen in talking about the William Bean family from Pittsylvania Co. Va and settled early in 1769 on Boone's Creek, a tributary of Watauga said he was joined by his kindred and friends from the same section of Virginia where he had formely lived, and such worthy pioneers as his son, William Bean, Jr., William Stone, Thomas Hardiman and Capt. George Russell. Joe Payne
My STONE/STEIN family came from Germany in the 1700's and settled in the (what is now) BUCKS County PA area. Check the early Bucks cemetery records, if your Stein's were from that area. Hi! I see alot of STONE's being thrown around in this list but none from ENGLAND!! My great-great Grandfather, DANIEL STONE, was born in ENGLAND [County Kent] in 1859. He married EMILY CANSFIELD and they had twin daughters, Mabel Mary and Ethel May, born 1 march 1888 in County Kent. They immigrated to the US in @1901 and ended up settling in Excelsior, Vinehill, Hennepin Co., MN. I'm unsure if they passed through Ellis Island or not, that's my next step. Any information would be really appreciated! There has got to be more STONE families that originated in ENGLAND!! Thanks... Paula *:O)- [email protected]
I would like to correspond with Hillra Stone Qualls who posted a query to this list on May 2? I am researching Stone's in Buchanan and Platte counties and any related counties. My great grandmother was Mattie Stone Stobaugh married Kenos F.[called Tom] Stobaugh. All of their children were born in Platte county, Mattie had a sister Nannie B. Stone who married Robert Atha and lived all of her life in Buchanan county just south of St. Joe, though she is buried in Platte county. I have not been able to find where Mattie is buried, she was alive when Kenos died in 1932. He is buried in Davis Chapel cemetery along with two of their children. I know the family must have lived close to St. Joe because I have pictures taken by professional photographers in St. Joe of Mattie before she was married. Would love to have any clues and I am happy to correspond with anyone researching Stone's in this area. BARB ANTHONY, KS
Austin Stone settled along Lynches River in SC and from him came most of the Stones in SC, particularly those in lower Florence and Williamsburg Counties. Anyone who feels he is of this line and has something to offer, or needs what I have on Stone line, please e-mail me.
In a message dated 98-05-02 17:07:35 EDT, you write: << You mentioned the Stones in Missouri. There were some of the TN Stone families that married Barnes/Bohannons that moved to Buchannon County, Mo. Do you know anyone in that area that is working on the Stones? Thanks Hillra Stone Qualls >> Hi Hillra: No I sure don't. Stone isn't a main or direct line of mine. They just show up in several places, marrying into my database. And I have gotten interested in them. Mine are all in Cooper Co., MO Frances
Hi Frances, You mentioned the Stones in Missouri. There were some of the TN Stone families that married Barnes/Bohannons that moved to Buchannon County, Mo. Do you know anyone in that area that is working on the Stones? Thanks Hillra Stone Qualls Sparta, TN.
Does any one know anything about James R Stone who married Elizabeth Willis Sept. 13, 1847 in SAngamon Co Il? My g-grandfather Stone was James R Stone, Jr who died in Independence Co Ar between 1910 and 1920. I would like to know who his parents were. I know he had a brother named William and one named James who lived near him in Independence Co. It seems strange to me that there would be 2 brothers named James but my grandmother, Ida Pearlee Stone Gilliam told me the man who donated land for the Stone school house was her uncle. I have found through land records his name was James. Could have been her great-uncle. The only thing I know for sure other than this is she was related to the Dicky family through the Stones. James R Stone, Jr wife was Emma Clementine Jones. Could the above mentioned James R and Elizabeth have been his parents? Jan Gilliam Reynolds

Hi fellow Stone researchers. I am looking for descendants of William Henry Stone who married Ardell Cartner, 1860, in Henry Co., MO. Would also love to discover who his parents are. Another Stone is Addison Stone (who may have been also called Adam Stone). He married Poly Ann Seat, 1874, in Cooper Co., MO. Addison and Poly both died before 1880, and had three children, Emma, Thomas, and Daisy. Daisy died of pneumonia and measles in 1879, at the same time as her mother. Happy to share what little I have on these Stones! Frances
