    2. "Chicago: Its History And Its Builders, A Century Of Marvelous Growth, Volume V, 1912, The S. J. Clarke Publishing Company, Chicago, pages 672-674: Horatio O. Stone Horatio O. Stone, one of the pioneers of Chicago and a leading citizen, merchant and real estate dealer of the city for upwards of forty years, was born on Boughton Hill, in the town of Victor, Ontario (now Monroe) county, New York, January 2, 1811, and died at his home in Chicago, on July 20, 1877. Mr. Stone was descended from a line of sturdy farmers in the eastern states. His father, Ebenezer Stone, born at Stonington, Connecticut was one of the early settlers of western New York and, with his compeers in the advance of civilization, was engaged in many of the Indian battles then frequent on the frontier. He likewise served in the war of 1812. He died in 1843, at the residence of his son in Chicago. He was a widower at the time, his wife, whose maiden name was Clarissa Odell, having died six weeks after the birth of the subject of this sketch.

    2. Jimmy Gilpatrick
    3. I am looking for information on Eugene Vernon Stone born November 19, 1908 in OK his father was Walter F. Stone B: OK, mother Mary McWaters B: AR I got this information from Eugene's death Certificate. This is all I have and want to continue on this tree. I just went through the Soundex for 1910 for OK and they were not there. The closest I got was Stone, Ira Head White 30 Missouri, OK -----, Onava, Wife 20, Missouri -----, Chas, Son, 6, OK -----, Lilah, Daug 4, OK -----, Eugene NR, OK (I suppose NR means not readable? Don't know) As we all know death certificates are only as good as the person giving the information. I have encountered this before - Lots. Does anyone know how to get a copy of the application for the deceased that they filled out to get their social security cards. I have Eugenes, Social Security number and would really like to get this application. Also how long does it take to get it back. What is the charge. Thanks in advance. Hope I can make a connection somewhere. Leona

    1. [STONE-L] Real Grave Stone Inscriptions
    2. John D. Stone
    3. Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 From: "R. J. O'Donnell" <[email protected]> Subject: Real Grave Stone Inscriptions This is sort of "on", yet "off" topic. Hopefully, list members will enjoy reading these inscriptions and, who knows, someone may make a connection. On the grave of Ezekial Aikle in East Dalhousie Cemetery, Nova Scotia: Here lies Ezekial Aikle Age 102 The Good Die Young. In a London, England cemetery: Ann Mann Here lies Ann Mann, Who lived an old maid But died an old Mann. Dec. 8, 1767 In a Ribbesford, England, cemetery: Anna Wallace The children of Israel wanted bread And the Lord sent them manna, Old clerk Wallace wanted a wife, And the Devil sent him Anna. Playing with names in a Ruidoso, New Mexico, cemetery: Here lies Johnny Yeast Pardon me For not rising. Memory of an accident in a Uniontown, Pennsylvania cemetery: Here lies the body of Jonathan Blake Stepped on the gas Instead of the brake. In a Silver City, Nevada, cemetery: Here lays Butch, We planted him raw. He was quick on the trigger, But slow on the draw. A widow wrote this epitaph in a Vermont cemetery: Sacred to the memory of my husband John Barnes who died January 3, 1803 His comely young widow, aged 23, has many qualifications of a good wife, and yearns to be comforted. A lawyer's epitaph in England: Sir John Strange Here lies an honest lawyer, And that is Strange. Someone determined to be anonymous in Stowe, Vermont: I was somebody. Who, is no business Of yours. Lester Moore was a Wells, Fargo Co. station agent for Naco, Arizona in the cowboy days of the 1880's. He's buried in the Boot Hill Cemetery in Tombstone, Arizona: Here lies Lester Moore Four slugs from a .44 No Les No More. In a Georgia cemetery: "I told you I was sick!" John Penny's epitaph in the Wimborne, England, cemetery: Reader if cash thou art In want of any Dig 4 feet deep And thou wilt find a Penny. On Margaret Daniels grave at Hollywood Cemetery Richmond, Virginia: She always said her feet were killing her but nobody believed her. In a cemetery in Hartscombe, England: On the 22nd of June - Jonathan Fiddle - Went out of tune. Anna Hopewell's grave in Enosburg Falls, Vermont has an epitaph that sounds like something from a Three Stooges movie: Here lies the body of our Anna Done to death by a banana It wasn't the fruit that laid her low But the skin of the thing that made her go. More fun with names with Owen Moore in Battersea, London, England: Gone away Owin' more Than he could pay. Someone in Winslow, Maine didn't like Mr. Wood: In Memory of Beza Wood Departed this life Nov. 2, 1837 Aged 45 yrs. Here lies one Wood Enclosed in wood One Wood Within another. The outer wood Is very good: We cannot praise The other. On a grave from the 1880's in Nantucket, Massachusetts: Under the sod and under the trees Lies the body of Jonathan Pease. He is not here, there's only the pod: Pease shelled out and went to God. The grave of Ellen Shannon in Girard, Pennsylvania is almost a consumer tip: Who was fatally burned March 21, 1870 by the explosion of a lamp filled with "R.E. Danforth's Non-Explosive Burning Fluid" Oops! Harry Edsel Smith of Albany, New York: Born 1903--Died 1942 Looked up the elevator shaft to see if the car was on the way down. It was. In a Thurmont, Maryland, cemetery: Here lies an Atheist All dressed up With No Place To Go - ---------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------- John D. 3. ***** Forwarded Msg from Patti Woodard <[email protected]> ***** I saw this on another list and just had to share it with everyone (I apologize if you receive this more than once since I'm sending it to several lists). One woman wrote back that she types this poem on the back of 3x5 index cards, long with her name and address, laminates the cards and attaches them to the stems of fake flowers (or flags?) left at each of her ancestors graves. She encourages anyone interested in her idea to feel free to do the same. I, for one, intend to do just that! Maybe a long lost cousin will find it and contact me! ------------- Dear Ancestor Your tombstone stands among the rest; Neglected and alone. The name and date are chiseled out On polished, marbled stone. It reaches out to all who care It is too late to mourn. You did not know that I exist You died and I was born. Yet each of us are cells of you In flesh, in blood, in bone. Our blood contracts and beats a pulse Entirely not our own. Dear Ancestor, the place you filled One hundred years ago Spreads out among the ones you left Who would have loved you so. I wonder if you lived and loved, I wonder if you knew That someday I would find this spot, And come to visit you. Hi Dolly, I don't think I can help, but I am desparately searching for my STONE line first recorded as Lewis/Louis STONE, age 30, b "unknown" in the 1850 Benson, Rutland, VT Census with wife, Mary, age 17, b "unknown" and infant son, Lewis/Louis b VT. (Probably Mary was dealing with the Census taker and couldn't understand English). I've been told that some STONES changed their name from LAROCHE/ROCHE/LAROQUE/ROQUE/dit STPIERRE. In the 1860 Benson Census he is listed, age 40, b Canada with wife, Mary, age 35?, b Canada and chil Henry, age 9, Sufrie?, age 6, Misline? (my Marcia), age 3, and infant, Mary all b VT. I've been toying with the idea that my Lewis/Louis might be connected to Rev. George Washington STONE b 1777 Piermont, Grafton, NH (Hugh1, Hugh2, Uriah3, Uriah4 George Wash.5, Malvina6, mother of Pres. Chester Alan Arthur). Hugh1, murdered wife, Hannah FOSTER in Andover, MA. Rev. George m Judith STEVENS, b Newbury, VT and they had chil. in Berkshire, VT and removed to Dunham, Que (more children) and died there. This is the basis of my "wild" idea - my gtgm, Marcia STONE, b 1856 Benson m Samuel BRYSON in Mt. Holly, 1870 and divorced somtime before 1880. My grm, Lilly Almira BRYSON was placed in the Shaker Community in Enfield, Grafton, NH before 1880. Her mother, Marcia, was living in either Manchester, Bennington, VT, Mt. Holly or Benson, Rutland, VT at the time. Relatives of Judith STEVENS were living in Enfield, NH. Thinking that maybe her father, Lewis/Louis STONE, knowing cousins in Enfield, advised his dau., Marcia, about the Shaker facility (they took in children) when she couldn't care for her????? Hope you or some STONE researcher can help me with this line. Do any of the STONES in your book connect to the Andover, MA/Piermont, NH line? Thanks for listening.........Janet Franklin Ross - MA/AZ ([email protected])

    3. Hi all, I am new on your list, but very happy to find a Stone family digest. I begin with Clara B. Stone also called Clarissa B. Stone b. 1829 some where around Hardwick or Petersham area.; she died ae 26 1855 and is buried in the Hardwick Cemetery; she m. John Vincent Presho 3 April 1850 ,Hardwick, MA. She was the dau. of Samuel Stone and Elizabeth ---------. I need Elizabeth's maiden name and the parents of Samuel Stone her father. I am writing a book on the Rogers family who are Mayflower descendants and the Stone family joins them. Once I have this information I will close my book, I have over 300 pages with many family names so far. I would be so very grateful if one of you can help me. I hate to close my book without more on the Stone family. I have a feeling they may join in somewhere with the two brothers Gregory and Simon Stone. Thanks, Dolly

    2. I really need help on this one!! Is anyone researching Stone families that settled in Lumpkin County, and Fannin County, Georgia? Catherine shows up on the 1850 Lumpkin County census - probably a widow - and most of the children were born in S.C. Betty Cason
