STONE from California, see: http://www.gsd.harvard.edu/brc/report/08_landuse.html "Records of the 1880s for the then State of California indicate that wildfires burned uncontrolled for weeks at a time. Lack of protection from fire caused serious damage to irrigation works and water supplies of San Diego and other growing coastal communities. The first State of California Forestry Commission, established in 1886 by Governor Stone, reflected the growing public concern for the land. A report by the commission demonstrated the need for watershed protection by stating that major fires and erosion were injuring the climate, agriculture, and future prospects of Southern California." The following is confusing. Were Wm. Stone and Thomas Stone and John H. Stone ALL governors of MD? http://www.mdinns.com/inns/charles.htm "The Thomas Stone Historic Site You will find the mansion of Governor Thomas Stone three miles from La Plaata on the west side of Rose Hill Road. Thomas Stone was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, who had his city home in the Peggy Stewart House in Annapolis but was born in Charles County. His younger brother, John Hoskins Stone, became Governor of Maryland and returned to his native county. Thomas Stone served as State Senator and as a delegat to congress under the Articles of Confederation. He declined to be a delegate to the Continental Congress because of failing health and died in 1787. His home is now called the Thomas Stone Historic Site and is operated by the National Park Service. Its five parts are arranged in an arch. The central section is brick with a gambrel roof and to the east, is a small frame, one and a half storey gambrel roof structure. The site is open to the public. STONE appears to be in Ohio. http://www.history.ohio-state.edu/projects/coal/1902AnthraciteStrike/PublicOpinion/situation.htm "Scanned from Public Opinion, October 16, 1902. THE president's second move toward a settlement of the anthracite coal strike was taken on Monday, the 6th. Through Commissioner of Labor Wright, Mr. Roosevelt offered, if the miners would return to work, to appoint a commission to investigate the matters at issue between them and their employers and to do all in his power to obtain a settlement of those matters in accordance with the report of the commission. Mr. Mitchell's reply to this proposal was made public on Thursday. He declined to advise the miners to return to work "simply upon the hope that the coal operators might be induced or forced to comply with the recommendations of your (the president's) commission." Mr. Mitchell's position was supported by votes of the numerous local unions. Governor Stone on the 6th ordered out the entire national guard of the state, about 9,000 men, for duty in the coal fields. This action is commended on all sides, partly because it is believed that it will end the lawlessness that has reigned there, but mainly because it will put to the test the claim of the operators that they could mine coal if given proper protection for themselves and for miners willing to return to work if they and their homes were secure from molestation." I was truly pleased to hear from you and to know that you were well. I would indeed like to come home for awhile and if I had known that I would not have been able for duty before this I should have come. But now I shall go to the Front soon, in about a week I think. I am not well, but I won't live here. I am better though, and think by taking good care of myself Ill get along. Governor Stone was here today and will go to the Front soon.64 Perhaps I'll go down with him. I'm glad that money go through safe. I sent 100 dollars more. It was a check on New York Bank. I sent it in a letter. Please write as soon as you get it for I'm uneasy about it. If it's lost I can get another one here before I leave. When you write again tell me how much corn and so forth you had and whether all the farm was cultivated or not. I've only had one or two letters from you yet. I expect that others are at the Regt. Capt. Hoxie of the 8th was married here today. His Lady came from Vermont. I was at the wedding. I had a letter from Franklin today. He is well and at Kingston, Ga. and says my horse are doing well. Is your school a good one and what do you study? Try and go all you can and every day this winter. Please write soon and often direct as before until I write to change it. Tell Father to write soon. There is an essay entitled "The Influences of Protestantism and Catholicism on Colonial Maryland" that mentions Gov. Wm Stone. The following is an excerpt from it. "In 1653 new English commissioners were sent to Maryland to represent the English dictatorship.24 After receiving a lukewarm reaction in St. Mary's City because of its strong Catholic ties, the commissioners went to the new predominately Puritan city of Providence which was near the current site of Annapolis. Governor William Stone followed them, and outside of Providence there was a small battle called the Battle of Severn.25 The governor lost, and so began six years of persecution of all non-Puritans by the Puritan controlled government. Priests were forbidden in the Maryland Colony, and everyone had to claim to be Puritan or else risk the punishments of whipping, imprisonment, or even death.26" If interested, you can find the entire essay at: http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/educ/essay/html/97essay.html Bill `n Ann Stone [email protected] Currently in Fairfield, FLORIDA http://members.xoom.com/RamblinStone/ <=== Check out our Home Page!!! Can anyone out there tell me if a branch of William Stone, Gov of Md. in the 1600's, had a branch of the family that migrated to N.C. in the 1700's. Thank you. [email protected]
To all who sent me questions regarding my John Stone, I have no idea if he is really from Richmond, a Stone researcher made the suggestion to me, and I thought I'd ask around. All I know of John is that he was born about 1750 in VA and that he married Mary ? abt 1775. I am told they were married in Hanover, VA, but I am not sure where that info came from. John and his family were in Spartanburg, SC about 1790. I have 15 names for his children, but highly doubt they are all his. It is said that he had 13 children. John son, Aaron (relationship not proven to my knowledge), who is my ancestor, was born about 1780, and I am told he was born in Pittsylvania Co., VA. Once again, I am not sure where this info came from. I am told that my line ties in with Joshua Stone of Pittsylvania Co., VA and Asher Stone b. 1806, also from Pittsylvania Co. The Stone researcher I mentioned earlier, is a descendant of Asher Stone, and sent me a paper that suggests Asher's line comes from the Richmond County Stones. If anyone knows of a John who was born about the 1750's, married a Mary, and lived in SC, please let me know :) Then again, maybe his father or grandfather where from there. You can see more about my Stones on my web page: http://www.aros.net/~stone/webpage.htm Thanks, Anjanette
