    2. Irene Del Bono
    3. I received the following letter from Nancy Grabowski, who responds to people looking for relatives buried in the Cambridge cemetery in Cambridge, Mass. She was very kind to respond, although the answer is disheartening. I also have looked for folks whose death certificates clearly state where they were buried, and what cemetery, but the town has no record. Often, there are other family members buried in the cemetery, and it's possible that later family was buried in the same plot, but their name never got on the headstone. Dear Irene: Unfortunately we have no record of either Elder John or Deacon Gregory buried here in the Cemetery. The Cambridge Cemetery, is quite often confused with the Old Cambridge Cemetery but are not one in the same. The Old Cambridge Cemetery used to be located and what in now called Sennott Park and is situated on the corner of Broadway and Prospect Street in Cambridge. This Cemetery was closed and all the persons buried here were removed anat the expense of their own families to other cemteries in the area. Which cemetery did they end up in? we have no way of knowing, because their records accompanied their remains to the final resting place and nobody had the forsight to go back and amend any of the death certificates to reflect the final resting place. Had that been done, people like yourself would have the burial information instantaineously. Even though the Cambridge Cemetery did not open until 1850 we did check to see if these two persons ended up here. Our records show that they did not. you can contact the Cambridge Historical Department at 831 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge MA or you can e-mail them as you did to me, they may have further information for you regarding the Old Cambridge Cemetery. If our office can be of further assistance, please write again. 1. [STONE-L] Cane Ridge/Barton W. Stone
    2. Some of you may know and some may have attended already or will attend some of the celebration at Cane Ridge Meeting House, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Great Revival of 1801. I was privileged to attend the opening session Saturday and again Sunday afternoon. Upon retirement, former curators were presented with a cash gift. They asked that it be used for a bronze bust of Barton W. Stone. That bust was presented and dedicated Saturday and is on a pedestal in the graveyard on the grounds. It is awe-inspiring! 1. [STONE-L] Guilford Stones
    2. In a message dated 7/31/01 7:00:53 AM Eastern Daylight Time, idelbono@hotmail.com writes: << This John was born about 1610 near Guildford, Surrey co., England, and died Feb. 1687 at Guilford, Conn., son of Reverend Samuel Stone. >> Hi Irene, When I replied to the list I hadn't even noticed it was you! Actually I just signed on to the list last week! Concerning the book you mentioned: "Ancestors and Descendants of Anson Parmilee Stone Descended from John Stone of Guilford, Conn." compiled by Christine Rose and Seymour T. Rose, 1963 I have not read it but picked up on error # 1...John being the son of Rev. Samuel Stone. This has been reported off and on for quite sometime. Most current authorities do not agree with that opinion as Rev Samuel (of Hartford, CT notoriaty) was himself born 1602. This impression most likely came from Mary K. Talcott, author of "The Original Proprietors," where it is written: "John Stone, an original proprietor, had an allotment of lands, but conveyed it to Samuel Stone by gift before 1640. Lechford speaks of him as 'Mr. John Stone, of Hartford,' Sept. 16, 1639; removed to Guilford, where he was one of the signers of the original compact in 1639. Lands were recorded to John Marsh, Feb. 1639-40; 'part whereof did belong to John Stone and were by him given to Sam'l Stone, and so by the said Sam'l Stone unto John Marsh, of Hartford, and now belongeth to him and his heirs.' His home-lot was on the west side of Front St." My feeling is, as much as there was a John Stone in Hartford, it is unlikely this is the John in Guilford,CT. I have done quite a little research in England concerning the Ockely Parish, Guilford, Surrey,Eng. Stone family. Although I have found nothing conclusive, I do believe there are tie-ins to the Thomas Stone family I had spoken about at last year's conference/reunion. (Rev. Henry Whitfield had written to Dr. Stoughton , dated March 2, 1634 requesting help in finding a curate who could help in his church in Ockely, Surrey. He asks, "If you can helpe mee you may send to Mr. Stone in Cateaton street not far from you wher this bearer lives who will give directions of his cuming unto mee" >From Inhabitants of London in 1638:(rents due the vicar) Saint Lawrence, Old Jewry Cateaton St. and Milk St precinct Thomas Stonns (ms, p 162). I find that any family history/genealogy book is helpful in finding clues, some that actually can be a much needed pice to the puzzle! But... be wary of taking any info as fact...many are riddled with mistakes passed down through volumes and years. Laurie

    3. Thanks, Laurie, for the information on Anne, John Stone's wife. I will make a note in all of my books so that I won't repeat misinformation (I must have missed the prior discussion on the list). I was lucky enough to get to the NEHGS book sale on Saturday, and picked up a used book "Ancestors and Descendants of Anson Parmilee Stone Descended from John Stone of Guilford, Conn." compiled by Christine Rose and Seymour T. Rose, 1963 ((150 copies printed). This John was born about 1610 near Guildford, Surrey co., England, and died Feb. 1687 at Guilford, Conn., son of Reverend Samuel Stone. The book states that John and his brother William came over in 1639 as part of the "Guilford Company" to settle near Quinnipiak (New Haven). If you (or anyone) would like information from this book, let me know (or if you know that the book contains innacuracies, let me know that too). _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

    1. [STONE-L] Ann Stone, wife of John discussion
    2. This should clear up the confusion...the most recent findings: THE AMERICAN GENEALOGIST July 1995 pp171-181 "English Origins of Howe and Treadway Families of Watertown,MA" by Dean Crawford Smith and Melinde Lutz Sanborn. TAG 1996 Addendum to 'The English Origins of the Howe and Treadway Families' "Our earlier article suggested that Ann, wife of Deacon John 1 Stone, was a daughter of Nathaniel Treadway (1). After further study, we think it more likely that she was Ann Rogers baptized at Boxted,Essex, England, on 14May1615, niece of Margaret (Wells)Howe. Further discussion may be found in 'The Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton, Part 1' (Boston: New England Historical Genealogical Society, 1996), 451-52. by Dean Crawford Smith, C.G. and Melinde Lutz Sanborn, F.A.S.G. Further info: Back in 1935 a book. Her uncle and aunt, Edward and Margaret (Wells) How, both left the wife of John Stone Anna, property in their wills and Margaret left property to the other children of her sister, Mary Rogers. 4 Elizabeth Rogers This recent information in the Eva Bell Kempton book seems to confirm the earlier information in the Tingley book. 3. re: John Stone query: per: Davis and Fifty Allied Colonial Families of New England, compile by Brig. Gen. George Arthur Davis, 1956, pages 142-143 (copy at NEHGS): "John Stone was born in Nayland, Suffook, England and was baptized there on July 31, 1618. He was seventeen years of age when he came to New England with his parents. However, instead of remaining in Cambridge with his father he took up his residence in Sudbury and became one of the original proprietors of that town, receiving his share in the division o fthe common lands. In 1639 he married ANNE, daghter of elder EDWARD and MARGARET (WELLS) HOWE, of Watertown, Mass. She was born in England about 1620. They made their home in Sudbury, Mass., until 1646, when he sold this property and moved up the Sudbury River and established a home on Otter Neck, then a wilderness, but now Framingham, Mass. IN 1659 he erected Framingham's first grist mill. He located his mill on the falls and it became known as Stone's Mill. He remained here until 1672, when at the death of his father he removed to Cambridge, Mass., and occupied his father's home. While in Framingham he held several public offices. In Cambridge, he succeeded his father as deacon and in 1682 was elected as Ruling Elder of the church in Cambridge. He was a Deputy from Cambridge to the General Court in 1682, 1683, when he died on May 5, 1683. ANNE, his wife, died after 1683." >From "The Gregory Stone Genealogy 1918 by J. Gardner Bartlett, pages 67 - 69 (omitting much descriptive material): "ELDER JOHN STONE (Dea. Gregory), born in Nayland, c. Suffolk, England, and baptized 31 July 1618, when about seventeen years old accompanied his father to New England in 1635, and presumably spent the remainder of his minority with the latter in Watertown and Cambridge, Mass. On becoming of age in 1639 he married...In 1646 he sold all his property in Sudbury to John Moore, and in 1647 removed up the Sudbury River int o the then primeval wilderness, and built a house at Otter Neck in what is now Framingham, being the first settler within the limits of what later became this town...Elder John Stone married in 1639 ANNE _____, who had ten children and survived him. For over a half century there has been much speculation as to her parentage. She and Nathaniel Treadway (her next-door neighbor in Sudbury) were the principal and residuary legatees (with no named relationship) of the will in 1644, of Edward Howe of Watertown, Mass., who was baptized 1 Jan. 1587/8 at Boxted, c. Essex, England, directly across the STour River from Nayland, co. Suffolk, and married there, 16 Aug. 1610, Margaret Wells; so it has been generally claimed that Anne wife of John Stone and Suffrana wife of Nathaniel Treadway were sisters, and daughters of Edward Howe. These ideas are erroneous, as it has been proved that Nathaniel Treadway married in New England, in 1639, Suffrana Hanes...and she had no sister named Anne; and there is no evidence that Edward Howe had any surviving children...it seems likely that Anne, wife of John Stone, was a sister of Nathaniel Treadway, and that their mother was probably a sister of Edward Howe, thus making them niece and nephew of the latter." >From "History of Framingham" by Josiah Temple, 1887. "John, s. of Gregory; was an orig. propr. of Sud. 1639; had house-lot on N. side of the Old Street, and shared in the 3 divs. of meadows, and of the uplands and Commons...rem. to the west side of the river, and built a ho. at "Otter Neck," near the fordway, in what is now Fram.; he built other houses for his himself and his sons on the hill near the old tannery; in 1658 he built near where the Sax. R.R. Station now is, where he was living in 1659-63...He was an elder of the ch. in Sud.; town clerk 1655; rem. abt. 1664 to Camb.; d. May 5, 1683, a. 64. He m. Anna How, dau. of Elder Edward, of Wat." If anyone has found definitive information on John's wife, I would like to update my information. If I get some time, I will try to locate her probate records/headstone or whatever else might be available. If anyone is interested in seeing Simon Stone's headstone, and a placque dedicated to Gregory & Simon in the Old Burying Place in Watertown, go to: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/g/u/i/Irene-L-Guild/ I hope to upload photo's of the view from Simon's old homestead overlooking the Charles River, and other Stone-related photos (including the falls on the Sudbury River were John Stone settled), in the near future. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

    2. Freida Wells
    3. Greetings, I am working on the Hendley STONE family of Williamson Co TN. I am trying to tie my ancestor Margaret "Peggy" STONE to this family. Margaret was born 27 March 1789 in SC, married James Job 14 Oct. 1814 Davidson Co TN (just north of Williamson Co) and died 8 Oct 1867 in Cole Co MO. At first I thought the William STONE that was in the Williamson Co TN area was her father, but after trying to find her parents to fill some empty blanks in my file, I do not think that now. I know that Hendley was married 3 times and had several children, but I do not have a complete listing of all children. 1. Jane Hungerford Harrison 2. Elizabeth Perkins 3. Mary Jenkins Children of Hendley and his 3 wives were. William Harrison, Agnes P. Barton B., Nichols, Mary W., John Henley, Virginia M, Jane S,, Elizabeth H. and Barton Warren. Now my question is, is my Margaret "Peggy" STONE JOBE yet another child of Hendley’s or is she a neice, or grandaugher? Margaret and James had a son named William Stone JOBE, so there must be a connection here somewhere. Any help will be greatly appreciated in helping me make a connection between my Margaret and this family. Sincerely Freida Wells NM

If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about aging that you think in fractions. How old are you? .... "I'm four and a half" ....You're never 36 and a half .... you're four and a half going on five! That's the key. You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back. You jump to the next number. How old are you? "I'm gonna be 16." You could be 12, but you're gonna be 16. And then the greatest day of your life happens .... you become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony .... you BECOME 21 ... YES!!! But then you turn 30 .... ooohhh what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk .... He TURNED, we had to throw him out. There's no fun now. What's wrong?? What changed?? You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40 ..... stay over there, it's all slipping away ........You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, you're PUSHING 40, you REACH 50 ..... and your dreams are gone. Then you MAKE IT to 60 ..... you didn't think you'd make it!!!! So you BECOME 21, you TURN 30, you're PUSHING 40, you REACH 50, you MAKE IT to 60 ...... then you build up so much speed you HIT 70! After that, it's a day by day thing. You HIT Wednesday .... You get into your 80's, you HIT lunch. You TURN 4:30, my grandmother won't even buy green bananas .... it's an investment you know, and maybe a bad one. And it doesn't end there .... into the 90's you start going backwards ... I was JUST 92 ... Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again .... "I'm 100 and a half!!!!" ¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø

    1. [STONE-L] Elizabeth Stone 1662, CT
    2. Hi folks, I'm new to this list, hoping to scale one of my brick walls. I'm looking for Elizabeth Stone, b. 1 AUG 1662 in CT. She married Maybee Barnes on 19 NOV 1690 in CT. I'd like information on her sibs and parents, etc. My info (old family genealogy - unsourced) lists her parents as Rev. Samuel Stone and Hope Fletcher. It is more likely she is daughter of Stone's 2nd wife, Elizabeth Allen - but I'm not sure of the date of this 2nd marriage or the age of E.A. One source tells me they had 3 children, Elizabeth, b.1644; Samuel b. 1642, Joseph b. 1646. My best guess is that "my" Elizabeth is daughter of Samuel & ? ; granddaughter of Rev. Samuel and Elizabeth Allen. Can someone corroborate this and/or set me straight?
