The classic, early work on Stiles is "The Stiles Family in America" by Mary Stiles (Paul) Guild, Albany NY 1892. Mary says proof that Robert came with Rev Rogers group in 1639 to settle in Rowley is lacking, he certainly was an immigrant. Perley in History of Boxford says "The first settler of the present town of Boxford was undoubtedly Abraham Redington. ... "Robert Stiles, another early settler was an immigrant from Yorkshire, England. In 1659 we find him owning a farm containing two hundred and fifty acres, with buildings thereon in Rowley village." It seems unlikely he was born in Rowley in 1637, before the first settlers, and acquired a large farm by age 22, with no record made of his parents. I would like to have your source for Robert being born in Rowley in 1637, and who his immigrant parents might be. Perley says he died 30 July 1690. The Vital Records of Boxford are less clear at 1:266 "Stiels Robard sen July 30 [168-?]" > .. +FRYE, Elizabeth b: Oct 29, 1639 Basing, Hampshire, > England m: Oct 04, 1660 in Rowley, Essex Co., MA d: Jul 30, 1695 > Boxford, Essex Co., MA Torrey Marriages, has Elizabeth born 1637, quoting Mary Guild above, and Fry Genelogy. [vol 2 p35] Guild, in Stiles Family, [p 472f] has Israel probably born of second wife of Samuel, not Elizabeth Cary. According to Guild, he married Anna Johnston or Johnson and lived in area of Lake George. If he had son John, he would be more likely to have been born 1736 in Washington Co, NY, vicinity of Lake George not Westerly, Washington Co, RI. I cannot find any record of a birth of Hannah Hall in Washington Co, RI [Arnolds' VR] > ................... 4 STILES, John, Sr. b: Mar 05, 1735/36 > Westerly, Washington Co., RI d: 1785 Saratoga Co., NY RI VR birth STILES John, of Israel and Hannah, March 5, 1736. vol 2; 35. Westerly Again, do you have any documentation or is this just taken from WFT or Ancestral file stuff? Regarding, George Washington Stiles, i find it very interesting that in my wife's line, we have another George Washington Stiles, (7), b 25 Oct 1853, Malden, Middlesex Mass. Line: Josiah Berry Stiles (6), Cyrus Stiles (5), Benjamin Stiles (4), John Stiles (3), John Stiles (2), Robert Stiles (1). We are not sure where the George Washington -- came from. Apparently we now have a second. I would like to know if anyone can trace the naming, since it seems these are the first appearance in the Stiles line.
