The other day I found a small headstone of an infant that has the word "Stiles" engraved on top, and "Baby Merton" Born 7/20 '03 Age 26 days engraved on the front. It is a small cement type material that has been hand engraved. I can find no records of that surname in our county. The grave is very close to the Missouri River, and I'm wondering if these were perhaps settlers just passing through. The year is hard to read, the "0" is clear, but could be 03, 05, 06 or 09. Would appreciate any info. Thank you.

Hi Susan, you asked about your list below. Many of your early dates and some places do not match currently accepted data. You need to document and verify your sources or look at other sources. For example: The Stiles Family in America by Mary Stiles (Paul) Guild, Albany NY 1892 Joel Munsell's Sons Publ. and Perley, Sidney, The history of Boxford, Essex County, Massachusetts : from the earliest settlement known to the present time, a period of about two hundred and thirty years Boxford, Mass.: The author, 1880, 428 pgs and Vital Records of Essex County Mass. Examples of discrepancies: I know of no evidence that Robert Stiles was born in Rowley, Mass. He possibly was born in Yorkshire England, parents not known. He died July 30 1680/89, Boxford, Mass [see Perley above and Boxford Vital Records.] I am not aware of evidence that his wife Elizabeth Frye died 1695 in Rowley. John Stiles Sr, did not die 16 May 1700 that I am aware of. He married (2nd) Mary French 14 Dec 1705. I have seen comments that he "was constable 1705; selectman 1725. No record of his death, but widow Mary died 1753. A number of other errors appear in the data given. My wife descends from Robert and Elizabeth. The Stiles Family of America is one of the largest family organizations in the country. Their historians have done a great deal of research.
