    1. [STILES] Temple, NH (KIDDER)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I have just joined this List because I am trying to solve a small KIDDER mystery. You might have seen my posting on the STILES Message Board, so I'll summarize what I said here. My ancestors were Joseph and Rebecca (CHAMBERLAIN) KIDDER who left Chelmsford / Westford, MA, to go up to New Ipswich, NH, with his two brothers and their families. Joseph and Rebecca moved over to Temple, NH, when that town was formed. They had 7 children, and there is only some information on them as adults. Their oldest was Wilder KIDDER who fought long and hard in the Revolutionary War. He married in NJ, and eventually moved up to NY and then back to NH, but had no children. Their youngest was Calvin KIDDER, who around Age 18, followed other NH families up to New Brunswick and remained there. He was my ancestor. He died "at sea" in Feb. 1799, only about a week after his only child was born. Their middle son was Joseph KIDDER and he is the mystery. He was born in NH in 1763, and he fought in the War as a very young teen. Joseph, Jr., "might" have died while fighting in upstate NY. There was a Joseph KIDDER who died there. BUT, the vital records of Temple, NH, has a Joseph KIDDER, Jr., marrying a Mrs. Hulda STILES there in 1795. .. BUT, the KIDDER book says that it was Joseph KIDDER, son of Francis, and born in MA, who married ..Miss.. Huldah STILES (dau. of Asa and Huldah (BIXBY) STILES, and born in MA. The 1880 Census has a son, Nelson KIDDER, listing his parents as both born in NH. The web site for Temple, NH, has 3 STILES marriages in the town during the 1790's. It shows a 1775 Census having a John STILES in the town. The 1790 Census has Asa STILES and Ebenezer STILES in the town, and staying there from 1820's. (There were about 10 STILES families in Hillsborough County, NH, in the 1790 to 1820's timeframe.) Asa is said to have come up there from Middleton, MA. The 1860 Census has the widow, Mrs. Hulda KIDDER living with her unmarried daughters in a nearby town. But, the book says that Joseph KIDDER (her husband) moving to Topsham, Maine, and remaining there permanently. It does not say when he died, or when he moved up there. The book says they had 6 children live. Asa KIDDER, Jefferson KIDDER (his twin, Washington KIDDER died as infant), and Nelson KIDDER, and their only daughter who married was Olive KIDDER who married Dr. David WILEY. So, this family is of a KIDDER / STILES marriage, but we don't know which KIDDER and which STILES. I've checked on-line, and I don't think I found mention of how many children Asa and Huldah (BIXBY) STILES had ! (I don't think I've found any mention of anyone having a daughter, Hulda / Huldah, in other families. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. I just checked the STILES web site someone mentioned, and the KIDDER name does not show up in a search, and neither does BIXBY. New List created on Feb. 1: CAN-USA-MIGRATION For Genealogy researchers, please remember to check the archives of the Lists & Boards for both your surnames and place-names.

    1. [STILES] Asa and Hulda (BIXBY) STILES of Middleton, MA ???
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: bbffrrpp Surnames: Kidder, Stiles Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stiles/1012/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello. My main research of 12 years is on the KIDDER name. There is a KIDDER book which was published in 1941, and has very good data. But, I occasionally come across a small mystery. One is about 2 Joseph KIDDER's. They are cousins to each other. One Joseph was born in 1761 and was a son of Francis KIDDER. One Joseph was born in 1763 and was the son of Joseph KIDDER, noting that he would be Joseph, Jr. The KIDDER book has the Joseph, b1761 leaving Concord, MA, and moving to Temple, NH, where he married Hulda STILES in 1795. And, it has Hulda born in 1772 in Middleton, MA, and the daughter of Asa and Hulda (BIXBY) STILES. But, a web site for Temple, NH, offers "vital records" from early Temple, and there you find a marriage record in 1795 for .. Joseph KIDDER, Jr., and Mrs. Hulda STILES, of Temple. I did a quick search on this Board and didn't find this family mentioned. Can anyone offer information on whether the Hulda who married in Temple, NH, in 1795 was a single lady or a married lady? Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. I posted a query on this family in April and did not receive any responses. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [STILES] STILES Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph which is identified as A. STILES. The photograph was taken at the J. Coble Studio in Newport, Pennsylvania likely sometime in the 1870's. The young man in the photograph appears to be in his 20's at the time it was taken. In addition to his name, someone has also written the initials "E. A." on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research I'm wondering if this might be a photograph of Albert STILES whose along with his family was recorded in the 1870 census of Millerstown Boro, PA. Census records provide the following information: Samuel STILES, age 53, a Physician, born PA Catherine STILES, age 52, Keeps House, born PA Hariet STILES, age 18, born PA Lydia A. STILES, age 18, born PA Clarra STILES, age 13, born PA Albert STILES, age 12, born PA George STILES, age 10, born PA I'm hoping to locate someone from this STILES Family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or if you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
