I had an aunt who was doing the family genealogy and searched and searched for a relative with the surname her own mother carried as her middle name. She finally thought to ask her mother (duh!), and it turned out to be the name of the doctor who delivered her. Great disappointment to my aunt, but funny to me. So yes, people did sometimes get middle names that had no direct family connection. Ida
