Hi Donna, Most likely through Philadelphia. There were tons of Stewart`s living near the Pittsburgh area. By the time your John Stueart came the mines were already opened and that was a good job source. The spelling was always a flip flop thing. I think it depended on who took the census and how he heard the name, plus your ancestors accent. My line were Stewart`s until abt 1800-1810, then we decided on the Stuart spelling. Some though kept Stewart and still use that spelling. On the earliest tax lists in Colonial VA, the name was usually spelled STEWARD, which was the English spelling.
