    3. My favorite place-name lookup site is http://geonames.usgs.gov (the U.S. Geological Survey's Geographic Names Information System). Go to that site and click "Query GNIS" (a much longer URL to remember, or type!) If you enter a fairly broad search (Cane Creek and North Carolina), you'll get about 47 hits--towns, bodies of water, cemeteries, churches, etc. that have "Cane Creek" as part of the name. Clicking the links on the result list takes you to maps. I've found it interesting to use a family name as the search term, and discovered to my surprise and delight that places are named for us! (Of course they are, but not being the most map-oriented person in the world, I need that little nudge to *look* LOL) Happy Thanksgiving, all!
