Stewart name comes from the Stewards who oversaw the northern part of Scotland and answered only to the King. This family responsibility was bestowed upon them early into the Scotish history (first millennia) and was to last indefinitely. Stewart/Stuart and Steward by some accounts are all the same, usually the first two. Because of the rich history in the lineage of this family, the spelling was quite loosly used bewteen family members, usually loyalty to a faction dictated the spelling. By my account, Robert II Stewart born 2 Mar 1315/16 was the son of Walter Stewart 6th Great Steward and Marjory de Bruce whose father was Robert Ist de Bruce King of Scotts. When Robert Ist died Robert II Stewart became the first Stewart King. Down this line came James the Sixth King of Scots who became James the First King of England who is responsible for the King James version of the Bible. My son Sgt Todd Herman USMC descends through Mormon pioneers, Revolutionary War veterans and early Frontiersmen through this clear line (thank you George W Headlee and Caroling Smith Heritage maintained and enhanced by Barbara Blizzard).
