    1. Re: William S. Stewart of Franklin County Tennessee
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Stewart Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AmJBAIB/7318.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi Lisa! Glad to hear from you!! Actually, I have three sources for the names of the children of William S. Stewart and Zilliah Ann Crabtree Stewart. The first is the U.S. 1860, Franklin Co., Tenn. census. It lists the first four children. (I don't know why I never followed up on the 1870 census??) My second source is the widow's pension that Zilliah Ann applied for in the early 1900's. William S. served in the Civil War on the Confederate side, so his pension is with the state of Tennessee. I have a copy (hard to read) if you are interested. It lists 10 children. but says that there were 12. My third source in the family tree record composed by Eliza Woodall intitled "William Crabtree of Crow Creek." The 1860 census lists the children as: 1. H.E. 2. Francis M. 3. Mack 4. Z.A. Now don't you just love these census takers that used initials?! They drive me nuts! These are: Hettie E., Francis Marion, Mack, and Zilla (Zilly) Ann. The widow's pension records list their children as: 1. Hettie E. 2. Francis M. 3. Mack 4. Zilla Ann 5. Lucy 6. Kiney 7. Jim 8. Jennie 9. Lillie 10.J.M. "William Crabtree of Crow Creek" lists the following: 1. Hettie (Hetty) Elizabeth 2. Francis Marion 3. Mack 4. Zilly Ann 5. Lucy 6. Maria Margaret 7. Caroline A.--- "Kiney" 8. Eliza John (that's what is says, go figure??) 9. James W. 10.Jennie 11.Lillie (Lilly) 12. Jeremiah E. Now, according to "William Crabtree of Crow Creek," William S. and Zilliah Ann had another son named Ovia Virgil. He was born right around the time of the Civil War and was raised by his grandfather Mack Harrison Crabtree. He grew up to be a successful businessman and took the surname of Crabtree. Don't you think that's a little sad, that's he's not mentioned on the pension papers, etc.? Times were very hard then and the Stewarts were poor (nothing new there! Ha!)so you can assume that maybe it was because of this?? Now, it was my gr-gr-grandfather Francis Marion who moved to Arkansas. I haven't followed the rest of the kids out yet to see where they ended up. Francis Marion had married Martha Elizabeth Carter. They started out in Newton County, Arkansas (where my grandfather James Christopher was born,) but most of their lives they were in Stone County. Newton, Stone, Searcy, and Independence Counties go straight across the state from west to east.. My grandmother was born in Independence County. I hope this information will help some Oh, Francis Marion and Martha E. had 14 children, so they did their fair share to contribute to the population of Arkansas. Ha! I can dig in there a little deeper if you are interested? Would love to hear back from you and find out how you tie into the Stewart line! I love to hear different people's stories. If you have any information that would help me, it would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks again! Bye for now. Marian Warren
