I have found, once again, Hamilton's son Evan listed as Ivin Stewart with second wife Melvina (Bridges) Stewart and her son (listed as a step-son). Evan was then listed as age 81, though he was listed on the 1870 MO census as being 80. (I'm sure I'll age at the same rate! :-) Anyway, his place of birth is listed as TN, but his father's is questionably SC and his mother's is definitely listed as SC. So I'm thinking perhaps Hamilton came from SC. He named no sons Charles, but he was living near a Charles in Surry Co., NC much earlier in his life. Evan didn't die until 1889. He lived in Polk Co,. MO at that time. Teresa, does that information mean anything to you in connecting him to any other Stewarts? If his mother was born in SC, who was the Elizabeth that Hamilton married? Does anyone have marriage records for SC? I have no idea from what county she, or maybe both of them came. Ida
Hi Ida, As you know, in my line had had 2 Stewart`s who with their families moved to Greenville, SC between 1795-1797. Really Nathaniel SR could have moved as early as late 1791, as he had a son Nathaniel JR who was already witnessing and buying land in Surry CO NC and Patrick CO VA by abt 1793. Your Hamilton lived right next door to my Edward Stewart (he might have lived on Edward`s land also)), as proven by a deed where it mentions land next to what was Edward Stewart`s and where Hamilton Stewart used to live (deed abt 1802). Your Hamilton is in Surry for the 1797 and 1798 tax lists, these were personal property taxes, not land taxes. I assume Evan is the only living child of Hamilton Stewart SR on any 1880 census? Nathaniel Stewart SR`s kids were all dead by 1880 that I know of. So were all of Edward Stewart`s kids. Nathaniel JR , had a son living in 1880, in Polk CO TN. His name was Daniel Stewart. On the 1880 census, he said he was born in SC age abt 94 (this is not correct, Daniel was born ca 1802-1806) and that his father was born in VA (Nathaniel JR born abt 1770-1774). Now, his first cousin Isham Stuart , who was Charles Stewart`s son, Charles was also Nathaniel Sr`s son, said he was born in NC (Surry CO in May of 1804). Charles in on the 1810 Surry CO census, and on the 1820 Buncombe CO NC census. I often wonder if these men who were very old in 1880, could even recall where they were born or where the father was born, ot if it was a mistake made by the census taker. Many times the census taker got his info from a neighbor, or granddaughter, as all the family was not at home . If your Hamilton married a Bledsoe, and she was Hamilton`s only wife and mother of Evan, she was not born in SC. According to Bob Bledsoe, if she was a dau. of John Bledsoe and Susanna Dawson Bledsoe, then she was born most likely in either Orange or Johnson CO NC. John Bledsoe and wife Susanna moved from Orange CO NC to Surry CO NC in 1771, with sons: Moses, Abraham, William and Benjamin. He traveled with his son in law Col. William Hardin, who had married Sarah Bledsoe.
