    1. Re: John Stewart/William Stewart from Scotland to Quebec
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Stewart, Turnbull Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AmJBAIB/7310.1 Message Board Post: Hi, we have a William Stewart born circa 1824, and a John born circa 1826 that we've lost track of. The rest of the family, David, Janet, Helen, George & Isabella were mostly born in Dundee, then Edinburgh, & moved to Northumberland & Durham by 1861, plus other parts of the world. The only thing is they were born under the surname of Turnbull, and between 1850 & 1860, most changed 'back' to Stewart, or added Stewart/Stuart to their surname or second name. However, William and John I have no idea about. Family legend said John was a ship's captain who in a fit of temper, threw a man overboard, and then fearing the authorities, he fled (to Porto Rico/USA?no idea where really?) leaving behind a wife & family with no idea either. This would be possibly in the 1850s. The dates don't coincide with yours, but the names William & John do! I don't know if they remained as Turnbull, or also changed to Stewart, or a hyphenated version of both.
