Stewart was born 15 September 1804 SC, died 13 September 1876 Claiborne Parish, LA. His wife was Sarah Elizabeth “Sally” Tucker, born 8 June 1810 GA, died 14 September 1876 Claiborne Parish, LA. This information came from a Bible belonging to a great-granddaughter (no one knows where the Bible is now). Sarah was the daughter of Reuben Tucker, born ca. 1760 NC, d. 1841 Sumter Co., GA. His wife was Candis Andrews. James and Sarah had the following children: 1. Mary T., born 1826 GA, married Gilford Kent on 20 August 1857 at the residence of James Steward in Barbour County, AL. 2. Lucinda, born 1826 GA, married Shadrack P. Sutton on 19 June 1842 in Barbour Co. They migrated to Bienville Parish, LA, where Shadrack became the first postmaster of Arcadia, LA, in Bienville Parish. He gave the town its name. 3. James L., born 27 September 1827 Jackson Co., FL, died 6 January 1914 Bienville Parish, LA. He married Lovie I. Wise on 10 October 1849 in Barbour County. Lovie was the daughter of Ezekial Wise and Winnefred Bullock. 4. Sarah, born 1828 FL, died before 1890. 5. Candis, born 1836 AL. James purchased land from the federal government in Barbour County, AL in 1840. In 1850 his son James L. purchased land from the federal government adjoining the elder James’ property. In 1859, James L. Stewart migrated to Bienville Parish, LA. He purchased land from the federal government in Bienville Parish, LA, in 1860. According to “Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Northwest Louisiana”, published in 1890, he was a cotton planter and a maker of boots and shoes. His family belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church, where he was Sunday-School Superintendent.
