    3. Thursday, Fenruary 1, 1940 The Halifax Chronicle, Halifax, N.S. HOWARD F. GREENWOOD A native of Halifax, Howard F. Greenwood, 92, first white settler in what is now Lethbridge, Alberta, died in Hospital at Edmonton Tuesday according to word received here yesterday. Born in Halifax of a pioneer family whose predecessors were among the first white settlers in North America. Mr. Greenwood, former accountant for the Hudson Bay Company at Montreal and Winnipeg, came to southern Alberta in 1883 by ox-cart. Mrs. Greenwood, daughter of the late Col. Fraser Stewart, one of the first chief factors of the fur company's Winnipeg post, and her husband, lived in the first home built in Lethbridge, which was known then as Coalbank. They were parents of the first white child in Alberta, Peter who was born at MacLeod. The were hosts to Lord Lansdowne, former governor-general of Canada, and Lady Lansdowne, during a visit of their excellencies to Lethbridge late in the 1890's.
