I have wondered at the significance of middle names among the Stewarts. My gggg grandfather William Stewart b. 1766 in Va. and who then moved to Ky. named his eldest daughter Mary Cole Stewart (born 1798). I have wondered if that was a significant surname in the family history and if children were regularly given family surnames for middle names. It definitely played a part in my ancestors' circumstance: My ggg-granfather Ostrander Coburn (b. ~1816 in Germantown, KY) married Mary Precilla Stewart (b. Nippenose-Lycoming Cnty, PA) ~ 1843-44. Their first son was born in 1846 (I think in Covington, KY) and was named John Stewart Coburn (i.e. he was given his mother's maiden name as his middle name). My Stewart Riley and Chapman families all gave their oldest son a middle name that was their mother's maiden name. Often younger children received significant middle names.
