Once you have a firm take on the town, I have found that searching using only first names, an approximate date of birth, and the town can sometimes solve a riddle. It might mean sorting through lots of names, but sometimes it's worth it. Especially for names like Alden, Russ, etc. And I usually make use of Ancestry's trick of putting in only the first three letters of a name with a * -- it can help weed through misspellings.
