Appreciate your help and assistance with this given you have no link with the family. This does look like it is the correct person. This John Stuart had little or no contact with his illegitimate son so perhaps news was slow in getting through but he seems to now appear on three separate records as being a police officer. I will do some digging in Edinburgh around police records but looks like our man. Thanks once again and apologies for not replying sooner to your kind assistance.
